How to Jumpstart a Car the Right Way

/ 1

Few things are more frustrating than getting into your car, turning the key, and nothing happens. A dead car battery is one of the most common issues drivers face, especially in hot climates like the UAE where extreme temperatures can shorten battery life. Long periods of inactivity can also drain your battery.

The good news is that knowing how to jumpstart a car safely can get you back on the road in just a few minutes. Follow this simple step-by-step guide from Carcility.

🔋 What You’ll Need

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • A set of jumper cables
  • A second vehicle with a working battery
  • Safety gloves (optional but recommended)

🪫 Step-by-Step: How to Jumpstart Your Car

1. Position the Cars

Park the working vehicle close enough so the jumper cables can reach the dead battery. Make sure the cars do not touch each other, and turn off both engines.

2. Connect the Jumper Cables

Follow this order carefully:

  • Attach the red (+) cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  • Connect the other red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
  • Attach the black (–) cable to the negative terminal of the working battery.
  • Connect the remaining black cable to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery.

3. Start the Working Vehicle

Start the car with the good battery and let it run for 2–3 minutes to send power to the drained battery.

4. Start the Dead Car

Try starting the car with the dead battery. If it doesn’t start immediately, wait another minute and try again.

5. Remove the Jumper Cables

Once the car starts, remove the cables in reverse order:

  • Remove the black cable from the jumpstarted car
  • Remove the black cable from the working car
  • Remove the red cable from the working battery
  • Remove the red cable from the previously dead battery

6. Let the Engine Run

Keep the engine running for 15–20 minutes so the alternator can recharge the battery.

⚠ Safety Tips

When jumpstarting a car, always keep these precautions in mind:

  • Never allow the metal ends of jumper cables to touch.
  • Avoid jumpstarting a damaged or leaking battery.
  • Double-check that cables are connected to the correct terminals.

If your car still doesn’t start after several attempts, the battery may need replacement.

🔧 Prevent Future Battery Problems

The extreme heat in the UAE can reduce battery life, so regular maintenance is important. To avoid a dead battery:

  • Check your battery health regularly
  • Service your car on time
  • Turn off lights and electronics when the engine is off
  • Avoid leaving your car unused for long periods
