4 Signs Your Catalytic Converter Is Bad

/ 45

The catalytic converter is vital to a vehicles exhaust system. It can be difficult to notice anything wrong since it isn’t something you see all the time. That said, there are a few things to be on the lookout for to make you aware you are having a problem.

  • Unusual Noises – sometimes the vehicle may develop a rattling sound. This is caused when the internals crumble and break off over time. It will start to sound like rocks in a tin can.
  • Poor Fuel Mileage – A clogged catalytic converter can cause poor fuel mileage. The exhaust is pushing back into your engine which alters the air fuel ratio thus affecting the combustion reaction. It will cause a noticeable decrease in fuel mileage. You will be spending more on gas and getting less performance out of it.
  • Sulphur Smell – When a catalytic converter is no longer properly functioning, one of the side-effects is a bad smell. That smell is produced by the gases flowing through it. In particular, it will have a sulphur type smell. The catalytic converter is a necessary device to convert hydrogen sulfide into sulphur dioxide, which is less harmful. If it’s not working then this process can’t take place and the end result is a smell that’s not unlike rotten eggs.
  • Check Engine Light – Most of the time, but not always, if it’s not working right, it’ll set off the check engine light. You will need to plug in an OBD2 scanner to your vehicle to diagnose if that is the cause of the engine light.

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, it may be time to replace your catalytic converter. Be sure to consult with a mechanic to get a proper diagnosis and recommendations for a replacement.
