Common Types of Auto Glass Fraud

March 13, 2025 / 2

Auto glass fraud is insurance fraud where scammers manipulate or exploit auto glass claims for financial gain. It often involves deceptive practices that lead to unnecessary or inflated repairs, costing insurance companies and policyholders money.

Common Types of Auto Glass Fraud:

  1. Unnecessary Replacements or Repairs

    • Some fraudulent repair shops claim that minor chips or cracks require full windshield replacement when a simple repair would suffice.
  2. Waiving Deductibles Illegally

    • Shops may offer to waive your deductible but then inflate the claim to recover that amount from the insurance company.
  3. Fake or Inflated Claims

    • Scammers may submit claims for damage that never occurred or exaggerate the cost of repairs.
  4. Door-to-Door or Parking Lot Scams

    • Fraudsters may approach drivers in parking lots or gas stations, claiming their windshield is damaged and offering an “on-the-spot” replacement, often using substandard materials or overbilling insurance.broken auto glass

How to Avoid Auto Glass Fraud:

  • Use a reputable repair shop: Choose a trusted auto glass company, preferably one approved by your insurer.
  • Verify the damage: If someone claims your windshield needs replacement, get a second opinion.
  • Be cautious of aggressive solicitors: Legitimate businesses don’t pressure you into unnecessary repairs.
  • Review insurance paperwork: Ensure all charges and services match the work performed.
  • Report suspicious activity: If you suspect fraud, report it to your insurance provider or the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).
