Tesla vehicles have changed the way many drivers think about automotive maintenance. With no engine oil to change, spark plugs to replace or traditional fuel system to maintain, owning a Tesla can mean fewer routine maintenance requirements than owning a gas-powered vehicle.

But lower maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance.

Your Tesla still relies on tires, brakes, suspension and steering components, windshield wipers, lighting and other systems that require regular attention. Arizona driving conditions can also put additional demands on tires and other vehicle components.

If you’re searching for Tesla maintenance in Tempe, AZ, you don’t necessarily have to think of routine Tesla service as something that can only be performed at a Tesla Service Center. Depending on the maintenance or repair needed, a qualified local auto repair shop can help you take care of many of your Tesla’s regular service needs.

At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, we provide professional Tesla maintenance and repair services to help local EV owners keep their vehicles safe, comfortable and performing their best.

Do Teslas Need Regular Maintenance?

Yes! Teslas need maintenance, but their maintenance requirements are different from those of conventional gasoline-powered vehicles.

A traditional vehicle has an internal combustion engine with engine oil, spark plugs, fuel filters and numerous other components requiring periodic service. A Tesla’s electric powertrain eliminates many of those maintenance items.

That means Tesla owners don’t have to worry about routine services such as:

Engine oil changes

Spark plug replacement

Traditional fuel filter replacement

Engine emissions testing

Many conventional engine maintenance services

However, many other parts of a Tesla experience the same wear and tear found on other vehicles.

Tesla maintenance can include tires and tire rotations, wheel alignments, brake system service, windshield wipers and other wear-related components.

The key is understanding which services your Tesla actually needs rather than following a conventional maintenance schedule designed for a gas-powered vehicle.

Common Tesla Maintenance Concerns for Tempe Drivers

Tesla owners frequently have questions about where their vehicles can be serviced and what maintenance is actually necessary. Here are some of the most common concerns.

1. Tire Wear

Tires should be one of the biggest maintenance priorities for Tesla owners.

Like any vehicle, a Tesla can develop uneven tire wear due to alignment issues, tire pressure, driving habits and road conditions. Staying on top of tire condition and rotations can help maximize tire life while maintaining traction and handling.

Regularly check your Tesla’s:

Tire pressure

Tread depth

Tire condition

Wear patterns

Uneven wear may also be a sign that your Tesla needs a wheel alignment.

2. Wheel Alignment

Does your Tesla pull to one side? Is the steering wheel off-center? Are the tires wearing unevenly?

Those can all be reasons to have the alignment checked.

Proper wheel alignment is important for maintaining predictable handling and helping tires wear evenly. It’s particularly worth checking after hitting a pothole, curb or other significant road hazard.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we provide professional Tesla wheel alignment in Tempe using alignment equipment and procedures appropriate for the vehicle.

3. Tesla Brake Maintenance

Regenerative braking is one of the features that makes driving an electric vehicle different. Because regenerative braking can slow the vehicle without relying entirely on the conventional friction brakes, Tesla brake pads may experience less wear than they would on many traditional vehicles.

That doesn’t mean the braking system should be ignored, however.

Brake components can still require inspection and service. Your Tesla’s brakes remain an essential safety system, so unusual noises, vibrations, changes in braking performance or other concerns should be evaluated.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we provide Tesla brake service to help Tempe-area Tesla owners keep their braking systems working properly.

4. Windshield Wipers and Washer Fluid

It’s easy to overlook windshield wipers until you need them.

Arizona’s heat and sun can be tough on rubber components, including wiper blades. Over time, wipers can crack, harden, streak or stop clearing the windshield effectively.

Inspect your wiper blades periodically and replace them when they no longer provide clear visibility. Washer fluid should also be checked and replenished as necessary.

5. Lighting

Exterior lighting is another maintenance item that applies to electric and gasoline-powered vehicles alike.

If you notice a lighting issue on your Tesla, addressing it promptly helps maintain visibility and safety. At Good Works Auto Repair, we offer lighting and light replacement services for Tesla vehicles as part of our local Tesla maintenance services.

6. General Wear and Tear

An electric drivetrain doesn’t eliminate normal vehicle wear.

Tires wear down. Suspension and steering components experience thousands of miles of road impacts. Wipers deteriorate. Wheels can move out of alignment.

That’s why Tesla ownership still requires paying attention to how the vehicle drives, handles and feels.

If something changes—new vibration, unusual tire wear, steering concerns, braking changes or unfamiliar noises—having the vehicle inspected can help identify the cause before a minor problem develops into a more significant repair.

Tesla Maintenance FAQs

How often does a Tesla need maintenance?

Unlike many gasoline-powered vehicles, a Tesla doesn’t follow the same traditional maintenance schedule involving regular engine oil changes and tune-ups. Maintenance needs vary based on the Tesla model, mileage, driving conditions and individual components.

Tesla recommends specific maintenance items at certain intervals while noting that vehicles should generally be serviced on an as-needed basis. Always consult the maintenance information for your specific Tesla model.

How often should Tesla tires be rotated?

Tesla’s current Model 3 guidance recommends rotating the tires every 6,250 miles or when the tread-depth difference reaches 2/32 inch or greater, whichever comes first. Recommendations can vary by model and circumstances, so check the owner’s information for your specific Tesla.

Do Teslas need oil changes?

No. Tesla’s electric motors don’t use engine oil like an internal combustion engine, so Teslas don’t require traditional engine oil changes.

That eliminates one of the most common maintenance expenses associated with gasoline-powered vehicles.

Do Tesla brakes need maintenance?

Yes. Although regenerative braking can reduce use of the conventional friction brakes, your Tesla still has braking components that should not be ignored.

Tesla recommends periodic brake-fluid health checks, and brake components should be inspected or serviced when necessary.

Why do Tesla tires wear out?

Tire wear depends on numerous factors, including vehicle weight, acceleration, driving style, tire pressure, alignment, road surfaces and the specific tires installed.

Rather than assuming there’s a universal replacement interval, monitor tread depth and wear patterns and keep up with recommended tire rotations.

Does a Tesla need a wheel alignment?

A Tesla can require wheel alignment just like other vehicles.

If your vehicle pulls to one side, the steering feels different or you notice uneven tire wear, having the alignment checked is a good idea. An alignment inspection can also be worthwhile after a hard pothole or curb impact.

Can an independent auto repair shop perform Tesla maintenance?

Independent repair shops can perform many routine maintenance and repair services on Tesla vehicles when they have the appropriate equipment, information and expertise for the work being performed.

Some repairs, warranty concerns, high-voltage system work and Tesla-specific issues may require specialized procedures or Tesla service. For maintenance performed outside Tesla, owners should also maintain accurate service records and understand applicable warranty requirements.

How Do You Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Car?

Many drivers want to keep their vehicles for as long as possible. Regular maintenance can help a car last for years, but eventually every vehicle reaches a point where repairs become too expensive or reliability becomes a problem. Knowing when to replace your car can save you money, reduce stress, and help you avoid frequent breakdowns.

At All About Automotive, we help drivers in Gresham, Troutdale, Wood Village, Fairview, and Corbett make smart decisions about vehicle repairs, maintenance, and replacements.

Signs It May Be Time to Replace Your Car

If your vehicle has become unreliable or expensive to maintain, it may be time to consider your options.

Major Repairs Cost More Than the Vehicle Is Worth

One of the clearest signs is when a major repair costs more than the value of the vehicle. Spending thousands of dollars on an aging car may not make sense if the vehicle still has other problems waiting around the corner.

Frequent Breakdowns Are Becoming Common

If your car seems to need repairs every few months, those costs can add up quickly. Repeated breakdowns can also leave you stranded and frustrated.

Replacement Parts Are Difficult to Find

For some older vehicles, finding quality replacement parts becomes harder and more expensive. Longer wait times and limited availability can increase repair costs significantly.

Maintenance Still Matters

Before deciding to replace your vehicle, make sure you are staying current on regular maintenance. Sometimes small repairs and preventative care can improve reliability and extend the life of your car.

Buying a Used Vehicle the Smart Way

If replacing your vehicle makes sense, buying used can be a smart financial decision.

Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection

Before buying any used vehicle, schedule a pre-purchase inspection with a trusted mechanic. A professional inspection can identify hidden problems and give you a better idea of future repair needs.

Look at the Full Cost of Ownership

The price tag is only part of the cost. Drivers should also think about:

Insurance costs

Fuel economy

Maintenance expenses

Registration and licensing fees

Make the Right Choice for Your Budget

Deciding when to replace your car is not always easy. A trusted repair shop can help you understand whether it makes more sense to repair your current vehicle or move into something newer.

Schedule an Inspection Before You Decide

If you are unsure whether to repair or replace your vehicle, the team at All About Automotive can help. We proudly serve drivers throughout Gresham, Troutdale, Wood Village, Fairview, and Corbett with honest inspections and maintenance services that help you make informed decisions. Schedule an appointment today to better understand your vehicle’s condition and your best next step.

How Regular Maintenance Helps Improve Vehicle Longevity

Owning a vehicle can be expensive, especially when unexpected repairs happen. Many drivers focus on fuel prices and insurance costs, but one of the best ways to save money over time is by improving vehicle longevity. When you take care of your car with regular maintenance and smart driving habits, you can help it stay on the road for many more years.

At All About Automotive, we help drivers in Gresham, Troutdale, Wood Village, Fairview, and Corbett protect their investment and get the most life out of their vehicles.

Why Vehicle Longevity Matters

The average vehicle on the road today is older than ever. Because of rising car prices, many families are keeping their vehicles longer. That makes maintenance even more important.

A well-maintained vehicle often:

Lasts longer

Runs more efficiently

Needs fewer major repairs

Holds its value better

Provides more reliable transportation

Small maintenance services today can help prevent bigger and more expensive problems later.

Stay Current on Preventative Maintenance

One of the most important ways to improve vehicle longevity is to stay up to date on maintenance.

Key services include:

Regular Oil Changes

Oil helps protect your engine by reducing friction and heat. Skipping oil changes can lead to engine wear and expensive repairs.

Tire Care and Rotations

Proper tire pressure and regular tire rotations help tires last longer and improve fuel economy. They also help your vehicle handle safely.

Brake Inspections

Regular brake inspections help catch problems before they become serious and help keep your vehicle safe on the road.

Spark Plug Replacement

Spark plugs help your engine run smoothly and efficiently. Worn spark plugs can reduce performance and fuel economy.

Smart Driving Habits Can Help Your Car Last Longer

The way you drive matters too. Hard acceleration, sudden braking, and speeding can place extra wear on important vehicle parts.

To improve vehicle longevity, try to:

Drive smoothly

Follow speed limits

Avoid aggressive braking

Stay on schedule with maintenance

Your car’s “check engine” light is one of the most important warning signs on your dashboard. When it turns on, your vehicle is letting you know that something isn’t working the way it should. This warning light is part of your car’s onboard computer system and can signal anything from a small issue to a serious problem.

What a Solid Check Engine Light Means

If the light is solid, it means you should schedule a diagnostic in Gresham, OR as soon as possible. Your car may still run normally, but delaying service can lead to bigger and more expensive repairs. Sometimes the issue may come and go, causing the light to turn off and back on again. Even if it disappears, the problem is still stored in your car’s system and should be checked.

What to Do When Your Check Engine Light Is Flashing

If the light is flashing, that’s more serious. A flashing check engine light often means your engine is misfiring. This can damage your catalytic converter, which is an expensive part to replace. If you see a flashing light, it’s best to stop driving immediately and have your vehicle towed to a trusted auto repair shop right away.

How Diagnostics Work

When a technician checks your vehicle, they use special tools to read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). These codes help identify which system is having a problem, such as the fuel system, ignition system, or emissions system. However, the code doesn’t generally tell you exactly which part is bad. That’s why further testing is needed to find the real cause.

Preventing Engine Issues with Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance can help prevent some of these issues. In fact, staying on top of services that improve your fuel efficiency through preventative maintenance can also reduce the chances of your check engine light turning on.

Why Early Diagnosis Saves You Money

Getting the problem diagnosed and repaired early can save you money and prevent bigger repairs later. Ignoring the light can lead to more damage over time. If you want to avoid unexpected warning lights in the future, learning how regular maintenance improves fuel economy and engine performance is a great place to start.

Schedule Your Check Engine Light Diagnostic in Gresham, OR

If your check engine light is on, don’t wait. Contact our experienced auto repair team today to schedule a diagnostic service and get your car back on the road with confidence.

The automotive industry has long been considered a male-dominated field—but that narrative is steadily changing. Today, more women are entering automotive-related careers, bringing fresh perspectives, strong communication skills, and a customer-first mindset that is reshaping the industry for the better.

Here, we’ll explore the rise of women in the automotive world, why the industry needs more female professionals, career opportunities available, and how to get started. We’ll also spotlight a real-world success story right here at Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ—Service Advisor Jennifer Hayward—who is helping redefine the area’s perception of what it means to work in auto repair.

Women in the Automotive Industry: By the Numbers

Despite growing interest, women remain significantly underrepresented in auto repair roles.

Women make up only about 1.8% of automotive service technicians and mechanics in the U.S. as of 2025

Over the past decade, that percentage has fluctuated between roughly 1% and 3%, showing slow but steady change

Across all installation, maintenance, and repair occupations, women represent just a small minority of the workforce

Organizations like the Auto Care Association continue to promote diversity and inclusion, helping create more opportunities for women to enter and thrive in the field.

Why the Auto Repair Industry Needs More Women

Increasing female representation in auto repair isn’t just about fairness—it’s about improving the industry as a whole.

1. Better Customer Experience

Many customers—especially women—feel intimidated when visiting an auto repair shop. Female professionals often help create a more welcoming and transparent environment.

Jennifer Hayward, Service Advisor here at Good Works Auto Repair, explained that this is one of the biggest reasons she got into the field in the first place. “I wanted to be on the front lines of changing the experience women have when they visit an auto repair shop”, Jennifer shared.

2. Strong Communication Skills

Auto repair can be complex, but clear communication builds trust between customers and automotive professionals.

To help customers feel more comfortable here at Good Works Auto Repair, Jennifer says, “I acknowledge that cars can be confusing and focus on translating the technician’s explanations into terms that are easier for the customer to understand.”

3. Diverse Perspectives

Diverse teams lead to better problem-solving, improved workplace culture, and stronger customer relationships.

Career Opportunities for Women in the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry offers a wide range of career paths beyond turning wrenches. Here are just a few examples, along with their primary responsibilities:

Service Advisor – Customer-facing role explaining repairs and coordinating service

Automotive Technician/Mechanic – Diagnosing and repairing vehicles

Shop Manager or Owner – Leading operations and business strategy

Parts Specialist – Managing inventory and sourcing components

Automotive Engineer – Designing and improving vehicle systems

Collision Repair Technician – Restoring vehicles after accidents

Customer Experience Specialist – Enhancing the service journey

When asked about the biggest misconception people have about working in an auto repair shop, Jennifer replied: “That you must have extensive technical knowledge about cars to be successful. I am proof that it is more about what you are willing to learn once you are on the job.”

In other words, you don’t have to know everything to get started, but you DO need a strong willingness to learn.

Here at Good Works Auto Repair, Jennifer Hayward is just one of our amazing team members making an impact on Tempe-area customers every single day. When we asked why and how she got to where she is today, here’s what she had to say …

What first made you interested in the automotive world?

“Watching my dad work on cars throughout my life definitely sparked my interest in pursuing a career in the automotive industry.”

What are the most rewarding parts of your job?

“I love being able to explain and show people the important repairs their vehicles need. It’s rewarding to help make their service affordable and ensure they know their car is being cared for as if it were our own.”

Have you ever encountered a customer who was surprised to see a woman behind the service desk?

“It happens from time to time, but I enjoy bringing female energy to a male-dominated industry. I communicate with professionalism and demonstrate why I am more than capable of handling this role.”

Being a Service Advisor is part technical knowledge and part “people skills.” Which of these do you think is more important, and why?

“I believe people skills are even more important than technical knowledge. While both are essential, being empathetic and making customers feel heard and valued is key.”

If a young woman is hesitant to join the automotive industry because she’s afraid she won’t “fit in,” what would you say to her?

“Pave your own way! My workspace is filled with things that bring color and life to the shop, including pink decor, LEGO flower bouquets in a disco ball vase, family photos, and affirmations.”

What is one “pro-tip” every car owner should know that you’ve learned from being on the inside?

“Staying on top of minor routine maintenance can save you thousands of dollars by preventing much more costly repairs down the road.”

How Women Can Get Started in the Automotive Industry

If you’re a woman interested in breaking into auto repair, there are more resources than ever before to help you succeed.

1. Education and Training

Consider enrolling in:

Technical schools

Community college automotive programs

Manufacturer certification programs

2. Scholarships for Women Pursuing Automotive Industry Careers

Women in Auto Care community

Automotive trade associations

Local networking groups

4. Build Key Skills

Jennifer recommends focusing on:

Clear, concise communication

Understanding people and exceptional customer service

Willingness to learn

Basic mechanical knowledge

The Future of Women in Auto Repair and the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is evolving rapidly—with advancements in electric vehicles, diagnostics, and customer experience. This evolution creates new opportunities for women to step in and lead.

Shops like ours here at Good Works Auto Repair are proud to be part of that change, fostering an inclusive environment where team members of all backgrounds can thrive.

The bottom line is that women are not just entering the auto repair industry—they’re transforming it. From improving customer communication to redefining shop culture, their impact is undeniable.

Arizona Winters Aren’t Free Passes for Your Car Battery

When most people think about cold weather car battery problems, they picture icy roads and snowbanks, not winter mornings in Tempe, Arizona. While it’s true that we don’t experience subzero temperatures, cooler desert winter weather can still affect your car battery, especially if it’s already been weakened by extreme summer heat.

In fact, Arizona heat is often what does the most damage, and winter is when those hidden battery issues finally show up.

How Cooler Temperatures Affect Car Batteries in Arizona

Car batteries rely on chemical reactions to generate power. When temperatures drop, even into the 40s or 50s, those reactions slow down. At the same time, your engine needs more power to start, placing extra strain on the battery.

For Tempe drivers, this means:

Batteries weakened by summer heat struggle more in the winter.

Short trips in cooler weather don’t fully recharge the battery.

Older batteries are more likely to fail without warning.

What Happens When You Don’t Take Care of Your Car Battery

Ignoring battery maintenance can lead to more than just an inconvenient situation where your car doesn’t start. When a car battery is neglected, it can cause:

Sudden vehicle breakdowns while you’re at home or work

Electrical system stress

Alternator overwork and premature failure

Corrosion buildup on terminals

Reduced reliability during early morning starts

A failing battery often gives little to no warning, which is why proactive care matters.

Watch this video to see why regular battery maintenance is so important:

Why Starting With a High-Quality Car Battery Matters

Not all car batteries are created equal. Cheaper batteries may seem like a bargain because of the low upfront cost, but they typically:

Have shorter lifespans

Perform poorly in temperature swings

Lack adequate warranties

Are more prone to early failure

In Arizona’s harsh climate, a high-quality car battery is a necessary investment, not an optional upgrade. A properly matched, premium battery can handle heat damage better and deliver reliable cold-weather performance when winter arrives.

5 Cold Weather Battery Care Tips for Tempe Drivers

Even in mild Arizona winters, a few simple habits can extend your car battery’s life:

Have your battery tested before winter mornings get cooler.

Keep battery terminals clean and corrosion-free.

Limit short driving trips when possible.

Turn off electronics before shutting off your engine.

Proactively replace batteries that are more than 3 years old.

As is true with many other vehicle maintenance tasks, preventive care now can save you from unexpected trouble later.

It’s happened to all of us … you’re driving along and suddenly you hear that sound … a squeal, clunk, click, or something you’ve never heard before. Maybe you convince yourself it’s “just fine,” but at our Tempe auto repair shop, we know that many strange car sounds are your vehicle’s way of sending a warning.

Here, we’ll help you decode common strange car sounds, what they likely mean, and when you should schedule an appointment at your local auto repair shop (hint: sooner is often better).

Related podcast: What’s That Noise? Your Guide to Spooky, Scary Car Sounds (and What to Do About Them!)

5 Strange Car Sounds: What You Hear and What the Sounds Could Mean

1. Squealing or high-pitched whine when you start up or accelerate

What you hear: A high-pitched squeal right after you start the engine or upon acceleration, especially when cold.

What it might mean:

A slipping accessory belt (serpentine belt) or worn belt tensioner

A failing alternator bearing or other pulleys

Why it’s important: Most belt or pulley noises start small, but if ignored, they can lead to belt breakage. Unfortunately, this can leave you stranded with no power steering, no charger, or worse.

When to call your mechanic: If the squeal happens repeatedly, gets worse when accelerating or turning on accessories (AC, lights), schedule an inspection sooner than later. Your mechanic can check the belt condition, tensioner, pulleys and potentially prevent a roadside emergency.

2. Clunking or banging when you hit a bump or turn

What you hear: A heavy “thud”, clunk, or banging sound when going over speed-bumps or negotiating a turn.

What it might mean:

Worn suspension components—ball joints, tie rods, struts/shocks

Steering rack or mounting issues

Why it’s important: Suspension/steering issues can escalate quickly. They impact handling, tire wear, and in the worst case, safety.

When to call your mechanic: If you can replicate the sound at low speeds, such as when turning into a driveway or hitting a small bump, bring your vehicle to your preferred auto repair shop. Your mechanic can test the components, check alignment, examine steering links, and recommend repairs before things get worse.

3. Grinding when braking

What you hear: A harsh, metallic grinding sound when you brake, especially at the end of the pad life or if a pad is failing.

What it might mean:

Brake pads worn down to the metal backing plate

Rotor damage or caliper not releasing properly

Why it’s important: The longer you wait, the more damage to rotors, and possibly the caliper, which increases repair cost significantly.

When to call your mechanic: If you hear grinding even once, don’t wait. Schedule brake service so your mechanic can measure pad thickness, check rotor condition, inspect calipers and guide you on whether a pad-replacement or a full brake job is necessary.

4. Knocking or tick under the hood, especially when the engine is cold

What you hear: A tapping or ticking sound coming from the engine area after start-up, sometimes fading once warm.

What it might mean:

Low oil pressure or low oil level (especially if engine was run low)

Worn valvetrain components (lifters, camshaft) or exhaust manifold bolts

Why it’s important: Engine knock or excessive ticking can indicate internal damage. Ignoring it can lead to major engine failure.

When to call your mechanic: If the sound persists past warm-up, or if you notice performance loss or oil light issues, schedule an engine diagnostic right away. Early intervention may be cheaper than full engine repair.

5. Hissing or whistling while driving or accelerating

What you hear: A consistent hissing (sometimes high-pitch) emanating from under the hood or near the wheel wells.

What it might mean:

Vacuum leak in the intake system

A leak in a turbo or supercharger (if you’re driving a boosted engine)

A failing exhaust gasket or cracked intake manifold

Why it’s important: Vacuum or exhaust leaks affect engine efficiency, emissions, and may trigger check engine lights. They also can increase fuel consumption or cause driveability issues.

When to call your mechanic: If you hear this hissing especially on acceleration or while idling, schedule an appointment for a diagnostic. Your mechanic will pressure-test the system, find the leak source, and repair it before it causes a bigger issue.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Strange Car Sounds

At Good Works Auto Repair, we believe listening to your vehicle and acting sooner rather than later can save you money, frustration, and time. That’s because strange car sounds often start out as something small but can escalate very quickly into bigger, more expensive repairs.

Here’s what to expect when you bring your vehicle to our Tempe auto repair shop after hearing odd noises:

A technician will listen to and/or replicate the sound you heard (bring a video or recording of the sound if you can).

We’ll inspect the likely source of the sound (belts, brakes, suspension, engine, etc.).

You’ll receive a clear explanation of what’s going on and an estimate of repair urgency.

We’ll help you prioritize (what must be fixed right away vs. what can wait), so you get safe and reliable driving without surprise auto repair bills.

The bottom line is that if your car starts making strange sounds or doing something you’ve never heard before, don’t dismiss it as “just age.” Your vehicle uses sound to communicate trouble. Whether it’s a squeal, clunk, grind, knock, or hiss, each has a likely cause and a correct time to act.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we’re ready to help diagnose and fix those strange noises before they become major headaches. Give us a call or schedule an appointment today — it’s worth your peace of mind and driving safety!

Whether you’re a college student at Arizona State University (ASU), Mesa Community College (MCC), or somewhere else, your schedule is packed with classes, study sessions, and social events. Your car is your lifeline, getting you to campus, part-time jobs, or weekend adventures around Tempe and Mesa. To keep it reliable without breaking the bank, regular car maintenance is key.

At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ, we’re here to support college students with expert auto repair, student discounts, and a free shuttle service to and from our shop. But that’s not all. Today, we’re going to explain five essential car care tips to keep your vehicle in top shape while you’re navigating college life.

5 Essential Car Care Tips for College Students

1. Stay on Top of Oil Changes

Your car’s engine is like the heart of your vehicle, and regular oil changes keep it healthy. Dirty oil can cause engine wear, reduce fuel efficiency, and lead to costly repairs. Aim for an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on your vehicle’s make and model. Check your owner’s manual for specifics.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we offer student discounts on oil changes, making it affordable to keep your engine running smoothly. Plus, our free shuttle service means you can drop off your car and get back to campus without missing class.

Watch this video to see what happens when you put off oil changes for too long!

2. Check Your Tires Regularly

Whether driving to or from college, your tires take a beating on Arizona’s hot roads. Low tire pressure can reduce fuel efficiency and increase the risk of a blowout. On the other hand, worn treads can make driving unsafe, especially during monsoon season. Check your tire pressure monthly (find the recommended PSI on the driver’s side door jamb) and inspect for uneven wear or damage. If you need tire repair or replacement, we provide honest pricing and student-friendly discounts to ensure your tires are road-ready.

3. Don’t Ignore Warning Lights

That check engine light or low battery warning on your dashboard? It’s not just a suggestion—it’s your car trying to tell you something’s wrong. Ignoring it could lead to bigger problems, like a dead battery during finals week or a breakdown on the way to class.

Our certified technicians at Good Works Auto Repair use advanced diagnostics to pinpoint issues quickly and provide a clear explanation of the repairs needed. We also offer a written estimate and the best warranty in the business, so you and your parents can feel confident. Plus, we’re happy to discuss repairs with parents over the phone and accept credit card payments for added convenience.

Watch this video to learn why you should NEVER ignore dashboard warning lights!

4. Keep Up with Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Routine maintenance, like replacing air filters, checking brake pads, and inspecting belts and hoses, can prevent unexpected breakdowns. For students juggling tight schedules, we make it easy at Good Works Auto Repair. Our shop, conveniently located near ASU and MCC, offers flexible appointment times and a free shuttle service to get you to and from campus while we service your car. We also provide refillable gift cards—perfect for parents who want to ensure their student’s car stays in top shape without the hassle of coordinating payments.

5. Build an Emergency Car Kit

Arizona’s heat and occasional storms can catch you off guard, so keep an emergency kit in your car. Include essentials like water, jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and a spare tire with tools to change it. If you do find yourself stranded, Good Works Auto Repair is here to help, even for major breakdowns requiring a tow. Our team services all vehicles—domestic, foreign, hybrids, and medium-duty trucks.

As the Arizona sun blazes down, your car’s cooling system faces its toughest challenge. At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ, we know how critical it is to keep your engine running smoothly in the scorching summer heat. Overheating can lead to costly repairs, but with the right maintenance, you can prevent breakdowns and keep your vehicle in top shape.

Why Your Cooling System Matters

Your car’s cooling system is the unsung hero that prevents your engine from overheating. The system regulates engine temperature, dissipates heat, and even provides warmth for your heater in cooler months.

However, in Arizona’s hot summertime temperatures, the cooling system works overtime to combat heat and friction, which can wreak havoc if not properly maintained. Overheating is one of the leading causes of engine failure, costing drivers thousands in repairs. Let’s explore how to avoid this with proactive care.

Preventative Maintenance That Can Keep Your Car from Overheating

1. Check Coolant Levels Safely

One of the simplest yet most critical steps is ensuring your coolant levels are adequate. However, it’s important to remember that you should never open the radiator cap or reservoir when the engine is hot. Doing so can result in severe burns from pressurized, scalding coolant. Instead, check your coolant first thing in the morning when the engine is cold. Look at the reservoir (often a plastic tank near the radiator) and ensure the fluid is between the “min” and “max” lines.

If the reservoir is low, don’t just top it off with any coolant. Using the wrong coolant can cause corrosion, damage seals, and harm plastic components. Always use the manufacturer-recommended coolant for your vehicle—whether it’s a 5-year or 10-year formula. If you’re unsure, bring your car to Good Works Auto Repair, where we stock the exact fluids your vehicle needs.

2. Inspect Hoses and Radiator for Blockages

Airflow is the lifeblood of your cooling system. Debris like bugs, dirt, or road grime can clog your radiator, reducing its ability to cool the engine. After a drive to Tucson or Casa Grande, take a moment to inspect the front of your radiator for obstructions. Gently clean it with a soft brush or low-pressure water, but consult with a professional to avoid damaging sensitive components.

Additionally, check your radiator hoses for signs of pressure or damage. A bulging hose indicates excessive pressure. In contrast, a soft, squeezable hose when the engine is cool suggests it’s safe to inspect further. If you notice cracks or leaks, schedule an appointment at our Tempe auto repair shop for a thorough inspection to prevent small issues from becoming major problems.

3. Pay Attention to Warning Signs

Modern vehicles are equipped with temperature gauges or warning lights to alert you to overheating. If your temperature gauge creeps past the halfway mark or a warning light appears, act immediately. Pull over to a safe spot, turn on your heater to divert heat from the engine (yes, even in summer!), and let the car cool down. Avoid driving further, as even driving a short distance can turn a minor issue into a costly engine repair.

For European cars without visible gauges, watch for warning lights or message center alerts. Ignoring these signals is a common mistake that can lead to catastrophic damage. Stay vigilant and treat any temperature warning as an emergency.

4. Schedule Regular Cooling System Maintenance

We recommend servicing your cooling system every 2-3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This involves flushing the old coolant, inspecting components like the thermostat and water pump, and refilling with the correct coolant. Regular maintenance prevents sediment buildup, which can clog radiators and cause overheating. At Good Works Auto Repair, our certified technicians use advanced diagnostics to ensure your cooling system is ready for Arizona’s harsh summers.

5. Don’t Ignore Modifications or Repairs

Custom grills, aftermarket parts, or minor accidents can disrupt airflow to your radiator. For instance, removing an air dam or misaligning components during a repair can reduce cooling efficiency. If you’ve modified your vehicle or recently had bodywork done on it, have your cooling system checked to ensure proper airflow and alignment.

When most drivers think about car safety, they usually picture airbags, seatbelts, or anti-lock brakes. While these features are undeniably important, one of the most critical elements of vehicle safety is often overlooked: the car’s frame. The frame—sometimes called the chassis—is the foundation upon which your vehicle is built. It supports the engine, body, suspension, and safety systems while absorbing and distributing energy during a collision.

A damaged frame, even if the vehicle looks fine externally, can drastically compromise your car’s structural integrity and safety. Understanding why the frame matters, how it can be damaged, and the risks involved is essential for every vehicle owner. This article explores the importance of the frame, common causes of damage, the safety risks, and how to address frame issues effectively.

Understanding the Role of the Car Frame

The car frame is the backbone of any vehicle. It serves multiple critical functions:

Structural Support: The frame supports all major components of the vehicle, including the engine, transmission, suspension, and body panels.

Crash Energy Absorption: During collisions, the frame helps absorb and distribute impact forces to protect occupants. Modern frames are designed with crumple zones that deform in controlled ways to reduce injury.

Alignment and Handling: A straight and intact frame ensures proper wheel alignment, handling, and suspension geometry. Damage can affect steering, braking, and overall drivability.

Mounting Points for Safety Systems: Safety systems like airbags, seatbelts, and side-impact bars rely on the frame for proper function. A compromised frame can render these systems less effective or even dangerous.

Without a properly functioning frame, every other component of the vehicle is working on an unstable foundation.

How Car Frames Are Constructed

Frames can be constructed in different ways depending on the vehicle type:

Body-on-Frame Construction: Common in trucks and SUVs, this design involves mounting the vehicle body on a separate ladder-style frame. It is durable but can be heavy.

Unibody Construction: Most modern cars use unibody designs where the frame and body are integrated. This provides improved fuel efficiency, handling, and crash performance.

Space Frame and Hybrid Designs: Luxury and performance cars often use lightweight space frames or aluminum-intensive hybrid frames to improve performance and reduce weight.

Each design has its own vulnerabilities. While body-on-frame vehicles can absorb impacts through the frame itself, unibody vehicles rely on crumple zones and reinforced sections. Regardless of construction type, frame integrity is critical for safety.

Common Causes of Frame Damage

Frame damage can occur in a variety of ways, from minor accidents to gradual stress over time. Understanding the causes helps vehicle owners recognize when to have inspections:

Collisions and Accidents: Front, rear, and side impacts can bend, twist, or crack the frame. Even low-speed collisions can cause misalignment that affects long-term safety.

Severe Potholes and Road Hazards: Hitting deep potholes, curbs, or debris at high speeds can cause structural stress that may not be immediately apparent.

Improper Towing or Jacking: Lifting the vehicle incorrectly or using substandard towing equipment can warp or bend frame components.

Rust and Corrosion: Over time, water, salt, and road chemicals can corrode frame sections, weakening structural integrity. Rust-related damage is particularly dangerous in older vehicles.

Previous Poor Repairs: Improperly repaired collisions, welding mistakes, or aftermarket modifications can compromise frame strength.

Frame damage isn’t always obvious. Vehicles may still drive normally, which is why regular inspections after accidents or severe impacts are essential.

Signs Your Vehicle May Have Frame Damage

Some frame damage is visible, but other issues require expert inspection. Common indicators include:

Uneven Tire Wear: If your tires wear faster on one side, it could indicate misalignment caused by a bent frame.

Vehicle Pulling to One Side: Steering drift or a pull to one side may result from structural misalignment.

Doors, Trunk, or Hood Misalignment: Difficulty opening or closing panels often signals frame twisting.

Unusual Noises: Creaking, popping, or rattling during driving or braking can indicate frame stress.

Visible Bends or Cracks: In some cases, dents, bends, or cracks can be seen in frame rails or undercarriage components.

Even if signs are subtle, having a professional inspect the frame is critical, as driving on a compromised frame increases the risk of accidents and further damage.

How Frame Damage Affects Safety Systems

A damaged frame compromises the effectiveness of multiple safety systems:

Airbags: Modern airbag systems rely on sensors and impact absorption through the frame. If the frame is bent, airbags may deploy too late or fail to deploy altogether.

Seatbelts: Seatbelt anchors are mounted to the frame. Misalignment can reduce tension or anchor strength during a crash.

Side-Impact Protection: Reinforced side rails are designed to absorb energy in T-bone collisions. Frame damage can reduce this protection.

Crumple Zones: Vehicles are engineered to crumple in controlled ways during impacts. A compromised frame may deform unpredictably, increasing injury risk.

In essence, frame damage can turn even the safest vehicle into a potential hazard in the event of a collision.

Structural Integrity and Handling Issues

Beyond safety systems, frame damage affects the car’s handling, which can indirectly impact safety:

Suspension Alignment: Bent frames alter suspension geometry, causing poor handling, uneven braking, and increased tire wear.

Steering Response: Misaligned frames can cause delayed or uneven steering response, increasing the risk of accidents.

Vibrations and Noise: Structural distortions can produce vibrations that lead to premature wear on suspension components and tires.

Crash Performance: Vehicles with compromised frames may not distribute collision forces as intended, increasing risk to occupants.

Even a minor misalignment can escalate into serious problems over time, affecting both everyday driving comfort and emergency handling.

Frame Inspection and Diagnosis

Detecting frame damage requires specialized equipment and expertise. Modern repair shops employ several technologies for accurate diagnosis:

Laser Measurement Systems: Precision lasers map the vehicle frame to detect bends, twists, or misalignment down to fractions of an inch.

Frame Straightening Machines: Hydraulic and computerized machines can restore frame alignment using controlled force.

Digital Imaging: 3D scans and digital modeling help visualize hidden structural damage that might not be visible to the naked eye.

Professional Expertise: Experienced technicians understand stress points and manufacturer specifications, ensuring repairs restore both safety and performance.

DIY inspections or assumptions based on appearance alone can miss hidden frame issues, which is why professional evaluation is critical after any collision or impact.

Repairing a Damaged Frame

Repairing a frame is a complex process that requires precision and care:

Assessment: The technician conducts a full inspection using digital scans and physical measurements.

Disassembly: Components like bumpers, panels, and suspension parts may be removed to access the frame.

Straightening or Section Replacement: Depending on the damage, the frame may be pulled back into alignment using hydraulic tools or damaged sections may be replaced.

Welding and Reinforcement: Repairs involve proper welding techniques and reinforcements to restore structural integrity.

Reassembly and Calibration: After repairs, components, suspension, and safety systems are reinstalled and calibrated.

Final Inspection: A thorough inspection ensures alignment, handling, and safety systems meet manufacturer standards.

Attempting frame repairs without the proper equipment or expertise can lead to compromised safety, reduced performance, and further damage.

The Consequences of Ignoring Frame Damage

Failing to address a damaged frame can have serious long-term consequences:

Increased Risk in Future Collisions: A weakened frame absorbs less energy during impacts, putting occupants at higher risk.

Reduced Vehicle Longevity: Stress on misaligned suspension and drivetrain components can cause premature failure.

Legal and Insurance Implications: Vehicles with undisclosed frame damage may fail safety inspections or reduce insurance payouts.

Decreased Resale Value: Buyers and dealerships often avoid vehicles with frame damage due to safety and repair concerns.

Ignoring frame damage is not just a maintenance issue—it is a direct threat to the safety of the driver, passengers, and others on the road.

Preventing Frame Damage

While some accidents are unavoidable, vehicle owners can take steps to reduce the likelihood of frame damage:

Drive Defensively: Avoid collisions by maintaining safe distances and obeying traffic laws.

Regular Inspections: Routine maintenance and undercarriage checks can catch minor issues before they escalate.

Avoid Road Hazards: Steer clear of potholes, debris, and severe curbs when possible.

Proper Towing and Jacking: Ensure vehicles are lifted correctly and use certified towing services to avoid frame stress.

Address Minor Accidents Promptly: Even low-speed collisions should be inspected for potential hidden frame damage.

Proactive care reduces the risk of serious structural issues and preserves both safety and vehicle value.

Modern Technology in Frame Repair

Technology has transformed frame repair, making it safer and more precise:

Computerized Frame Machines: These machines pull or straighten frames according to manufacturer specifications.

Laser Alignment Systems: High-precision lasers measure and correct frame angles and suspension alignment.

3D Digital Imaging: Allows technicians to visualize and plan repairs, ensuring complete structural restoration.

Material-Specific Techniques: Aluminum, high-strength steel, and composite frames require tailored methods to prevent warping or weakening.

These technological tools allow shops to restore vehicles to factory standards, ensuring safety, performance, and durability.

Conclusion

The car frame is the foundation of vehicle safety, handling, and performance. Damage to the frame, whether from collisions, road hazards, or corrosion, compromises every aspect of a vehicle’s functionality. Steering, braking, suspension, and safety systems all depend on a straight, intact frame. Ignoring frame damage or relying on inadequate repairs puts drivers, passengers, and other road users at serious risk.

Professional inspection and repair are critical. Modern technology—laser measurements, computerized frame machines, 3D imaging, and advanced welding techniques—ensures that damaged frames can be restored to their original condition, preserving both safety and vehicle integrity.

Understanding the importance of the frame and addressing damage promptly protects lives, maintains vehicle value, and ensures that every component of the car performs as designed. In automotive safety, the frame is the foundation—without it, even the most advanced safety systems and durable materials cannot perform their intended role.

Avoid using cruise control on icy roads.

Stay home if the weather turns treacherous.

Plan your travel route, keeping an eye on the weather forecasts and road reports.

Stay calm and composed; overreacting leads to mistakes.

Understand your vehicle’s braking system, whether you have ABS or need to pump the brakes manually.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Holiday Travel

For a trip that’s memorable for all the right reasons, steer clear of these mistakes:

• Ignoring the Forecast:

Before you leave, check the weather. Check along the way, too, in case of changing weather.

• Forgetting Car Maintenance:

A well-maintained car is less likely to have mechanical issues. Not winterizing your car can leave you vulnerable to harsh conditions.

• Overpacking:

An overloaded car is harder to handle and can strain your vehicle’s systems.

• Driving While Tired:

Fatigue impairs judgment and reaction time. Take regular rests.

• Skipping Meals:

Keep energy levels up with regular meal breaks to maintain focus and avoid distractions.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be better prepared for a safe and enjoyable journey. Remember, preparation is key to any successful road trip, especially during the bustling holiday season. Making sure your vehicle is in top condition. Stop in today for a FREE ConfiDrive® Performance Review Whether you’re in for an oil change, brake job, or new tires, we will complete a comprehensive multi-point vehicle inspection.

Every day, many people rely on their vehicles for work, errands, and travel. But in our busy daily routines, we often forget about an important part of car ownership: regular multi-point inspections for safety, maintenance, and performance. These check-ups are not just about fixing problems; they’re about preventing bigger issues from developing in the future.

What is a Multi-Point Car Inspection?

A multi-point vehicle inspection is a thorough exam of your car’s current condition. It’s done by automotive professionals who are trained to spot the smallest signs of wear and tear. Think of it as a health check-up for your vehicle. At Tire Choice, we offer our free ConfiDrive® Performance Review with every visit. The goal of this comprehensive evaluation is not to find problems, but to make sure your car is well taken care of.

Some states require a separate vehicle inspection to ensure your vehicle meets specific safety and environmental standards. Each state has its own laws, but these inspections focus on things like brakes, lights, tires, and emissions. Multi-point inspections, on the other hand, are more extensive and assess the overall health of your car.

What Gets Checked During a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection?

Every automotive shop has its own checklist for a multi-point inspection. For the best service, go to a garage that reviews your entire vehicle: dashboard lights and check engine light, windshield and wipers, body, tires, brakes, and steering and suspension.

At Tire Choice, our ConfiDrive Performance Review follows the Uniform Inspection and Communication Standards of the Motorist Assurance Program (MAP). We look at various components including:

Benefits of Routine Multi-Point Inspections

Extends the Life of Your Vehicle

Multi-point inspections are like routine check-ups for your car to make sure it stays in good shape. By addressing small issues early, you can prevent major damage and extend the life of your vehicle.

Prevents Costly Repairs

When it comes to car repairs, prevention is key. For example, it’s cheaper to replace a worn-out brake pad than it is to repair a damaged rotor or caliper. Routine inspections catch issues early, saving you money in the long run.

Improves Fuel Efficiency

During a multi-point inspection, an automotive technician will check things like the engine fuel management system, tires, and exhaust system. When these are in good shape, your vehicle burns fuel more efficiently. This results in better mileage, saving you money at the pump.

Gives You Peace of Mind

Knowing that your car has been thoroughly inspected by an expert makes you feel safe and confident. It reduces the worry of unexpected breakdowns and being stranded along the road.

When and How Often Should You Get a Multi-Point Inspection?

The frequency of inspections depends on how much you drive and the age of your vehicle. As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to get a car inspection at least once or twice a year or every 10,000-12,000 miles. If you drive frequently or in harsh conditions, you might consider more frequent inspections. Remember, consistency is key when it comes to car maintenance. Regular inspections will help you stay ahead of the game.

Where Can You Go for a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection?

Inspections are a crucial part of car maintenance. Tire Choice makes it easy for your vehicle to always get the care it needs. That’s why we offer a free multi-point inspection every time you visit!

During our free ConfiDrive Performance Review, our team will review your vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule with you, address any concerns, and provide a written report and estimate. From there, we’ll help you create a plan for maintenance and repairs that fits your budget and needs.

Whether you need an oil change, new tires, or want to make sure everything is running smoothly, stop by a Tire Choice location near you.
Failure to provide timely maintenance on a turbo-charged diesel engine can result in some expensive repairs, especially if it involves replacing a turbocharger or engine. The inexperienced may not realize how important some of the basic services are when servicing these applications.

This is the last article of a 3 part series discussing the warning lights on your vehicle.

The Battery/Charging System Indicator Light is amber in color and looks like a battery. When this light illuminates, or stays illuminated or comes on and off while driving it is indicating that there is an issue in the charging or starting system of your vehicle. There are several things that is could be, the battery not holding a good charge or having bad connections, bad connections at the starter, a broken or loose alternator drive belt, a failing alternator or again not having good connections. We recommend having this inspected and tested immediately, this light usually indicates an imminent failure that will cause a breakdown situation.

The Oil Pressure Light this is indicated in an amber color with an oil can with a drip. This light is often misunderstood as time for an oil change light. That is not what it is indicating, when this indicator is illuminated it is indicating that your engine is not receiving enough oil. This could be because of low engine oil level or low engine oil pressure. An engine that is starved of engine oil or pressure can be damaged internally within seconds or minutes of continued operation. We recommend if that light ever comes on, turn off the car immediately and have it towed to your trusted repair facility to have it diagnosed.

The Coolant Temperature Light is amber in color and shows a thermometer in a circle. When this light illuminates it usually indicates that your engine is operating at an excessively high temperature. The sensor for this light is measuring the temperature of the engine coolant that is circulating in the engine cooling system. If this light comes on it is recommended to turn off the vehicle immediately and have it towed to your trusted repair facility for a diagnosis of the overheating engine. Please keep in mind that engine can overheat without that light coming on if the coolant level is low. So make sure your coolant level is checked regularly with oil change services and immediately address any leaks of coolant that you may see from under your vehicle. Also, never attempt to remove a radiator cap on a vehicle that is overheating you can get seriously injured due to the amount of pressure build up in that system.

Lastly, there is the Transmission Temperature Light that is much like the Coolant Temperature Light, this light will illuminate when your transmission is operating at an extremely high temperature. It can turn on due to low fluid level, or poor transmission fluid condition, transmission pump flow, or when the vehicle is being used for towing at high temperatures. It is recommended to have the vehicle towed in to your trusted repair facility if this light stays illuminated, if it goes back off, then we would recommend having it diagnosed as soon as possible. A transmission that is operating at too high of a temperature can cause internal damage to the transmission.

The different warning lights on your dash, which we have discussed in the past few articles, is your vehicles way of talking to you. Make sure and listen then take the appropriate action to minimize any damage or down time with your vehicle. Happy Motoring!

The dashboard of your vehicle is full of warning lights. These lights are your vehicle’s way of talking to you (the driver) about your car. Some of these lights are pretty obvious as to what they are warning you of, like fuel level low or seat belt not being buckled. However there are some warning lights that are a little more obscure. All dash warning lights will appear on, when the ignition key of a car is turned on, but once the vehicle is started they go off within a few seconds. If they stay illuminated or go on while driving then that is a warning to the driver, that there is a potential problem. In the next couple of articles we will go over those to help aid in understanding what those warning lights mean and how you should respond to the warning.

Maintenance required light is often questioned by consumers. This is a reminder light, not really a warning light and it is set by the mileage of your vehicle. When the vehicle is serviced with oil changes or other maintenance items, this light should be reset. Then it will come back on when it is due for maintenance. If you look in your vehicle manual it is set up based on the scheduled service intervals recommended in your book. If you would like to service your vehicle more frequently you can have the maintenance reminder reprogrammed based on your preference.

The malfunction indicator light is known as the check engine light or the service engine soon light. It can illuminate as an Engine Symbol or the words Check Engine or Service Engine. If this light comes on this means that the computer of your vehicle has recognized that a circuit, system or sensor in your vehicle is working out of parameters. This problem can affect engine performance and emissions. If the light stays solidly on, we recommend making an appointment with your trusted repair facility soon and having the vehicle diagnosed and repaired. If the light is flashing on/off this is considered a catalytic converter damaging condition and you will usually feel a difference in the performance of the vehicle. In this type of situation you should pull over, turn off the car and have it towed to your trusted repair facility before further damage or a breakdown occurs.

During the next article we will go over a couple warning lights that have to do with some of the safety features of the vehicle. Happy Motoring!

Many vehicle owners are not even aware that their vehicle has a cabin air filter, but most of today’s vehicles are equipped with them. The cabin air filter in your vehicle is an essential part of your vehicle’s ventilation system. They function like a furnace filter does in your home.

The cabin air filter in your vehicle filters the air that enters the passenger compartment. Helping to protect the passengers from pollen, spores, exhaust gases, road dust and soot.

The cabin air filter also aids in keeping the vehicle interior clean.

Just like your home furnace or air conditioning system, your cabin air filter needs to be serviced on a regular basis to keep your vehicles heating and cooling system operating at its peak condition. A dirty cabin air filter restricts the air flow of your heating, defrost, and air conditioning systems in your vehicle.

Cabin air filters should be checked and/or replaced once every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or at least once a year. The cabin air filter is generally located either under the dash on the passenger side of the vehicle, or under the hood near the rear of the cowl.

We recommend checking with your trusted repair facility to see if your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter. If it is equipped with one have it inspected and/or replaced if needed. Make it a habit to have it replaced as a part of your regular yearly maintenance program for your vehicle. Happy Motoring!

We are in an unprecedented time with the Covid-19 Pandemic and it seems to grow larger almost every day. For those people who are not driving their cars for work, and are definitely not going out for entertainment, they can experience an unexpected complication with their vehicles. What is the best way to keep our vehicles in tip top shape while they are sitting in our garage or drive way.

The fuel in your vehicle is usually good for about 6 months, but if it is sitting more than 30 days, it does not hurt to add a fuel stabilizer to the tank so the fuel will not loose its volatility. Also, keeping the tank full will help reduce moisture accumulation that can be caused by the fluctuations in weather.

The battery of your vehicle can be in use even when the ignition is off. Driving or at least running the vehicle for 15 to 20 minutes each week can help to keep a good battery charged up. There are chargers or battery maintainers that can be hooked up to your battery while it sits, but I would caution you on the use of those, because you do not want to overcharge the battery and cause other issues. Solar powered battery charge maintainers can be a much better option and are safer for the consumer.

Keep an eye on your tire pressure, with weather fluctuations the tire pressure can change and you do not want a flat tire or driving your vehicle on too low of tire pressure to cause damage to the tires.

Lastly, we would recommend spraying your vehicle with a mice repellent spray, there are natural ones with peppermint essential oils that can help deter little rodents. These rodents can cause damage to interior under the hood and they seem to love to chew on wiring.

Stay safe and healthy. Happy Motoring!

Vehicle breakdowns, are inconvenient, expensive and always seem to happen at the worst times. There is also a huge safety factor, getting way off to the side of the road, using flares, hazard flashers and having an emergency kit, a plan and equipment in the event of a breakdown is always a good idea.

According to AAA (American Automobile Association) statistics show that 69 million people in the US breakdown in their vehicle each year. That is 1 in every 3 drivers. Most vehicles on the road are more than 10 years old, on the West Coast our average is 12 years old. Most of these breakdowns were preventable, such electrical or charging system problems, key problems and a flat or blown tire(s) being the top three issues. Coming in a close 4th are engine cooling system issues, that are evident by overheating or leaking.

The National Car Care Council runs A Be Car Care Aware inspections throughout our country on a yearly basis. They state that 80% of the thousands of vehicles that are inspected each year, fail the basic safety inspection. Belts, hoses, fluids, filters, brakes, the charging system, and tires are some of the main items that are checked out during an inspection.

When basics of vehicle maintenance are not being performed this increases the chances of a vehicle breakdown or failure. Having at minimum your vehicle inspected on a semi-annual basis and performing the repairs or maintenance recommended will be the most reliable and cost effective way to avoid breakdowns.

Simple things to have inspected prior to driving especially on a road trip are:

Tire Condition

Tire Pressure

Fluid Levels and Condition

Belts

Hoses

Charging System Test

Wipers

Exterior and Interior Lights

Air, Cabin Air and Fuel Filter

Keep in mind if you have a low level of fluid in any system, engine, cooling, power steering, brake or transmission, there is most likely a leak or reason why. We highly recommend having any leak repaired to prevent a further problem or potential damage to your vehicle.

Our last summer was pretty long and hot, and we have seen a rash of blown head gaskets on vehicles. This is due to cooling systems that are either not being maintained properly and cooling system leaks not being repaired in a timely manner, or not shutting off the vehicle when the vehicle engine temperature starts to get to hot, and having it towed to a repair facility. Extreme overheating and/or multiple overheating of an engine can damage the head gasket, can crack the cylinder head(s), or it can crack the engine block. The other issue we have seen quite a bit of this summer is engine failures, due to engines being run either on low oil or very dirty oil, that it is sludging either internally or in the oil pan causing an oil starvation issue with the engine.

Unfortunately, there are parts on our vehicles that can fail without warning, fuel pumps, alternators, and water pumps are some examples just to name a few. But most breakdowns are preventable so keep that vehicle inspected, perform maintenance as scheduled by mileage and/or age and have the repairs needed performed. It will save you time, money and frustration.

Happy Motoring!

When the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light illuminates on your dash, it means that your vehicle’s computer recognizes that there is a system, circuit or sensor that is working out of it’s proper parameters. The computer(s) in your vehicle try to compensate for that problem and keep the vehicle running as close to normal as possible. When the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light starts flashing this means that a catalytic converter damaging condition is occurring. You will usually be able to feel a noticeable difference in the performance of your vehicle.

When this Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light flashes you should pull over safely and shut the vehicle off. Have the vehicle towed to your trusted repair facility for a diagnosis and repair. Continuing to drive this vehicle, in this condition will do further damage and could cost more to repair.

The catalytic converter is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle if it is kept in optimum running shape. If the catalytic converter fails, it is important to find out why and correct what caused the failure. Or your catalytic converter will fail again. Depending on the type and age of vehicle you drive, causes a huge variance on the replacement cost of a catalytic converter. Many of the vehicle’s we drive in Oregon are manufactured to meet California Emissions Standards. If the catalytic converter in your vehicle fails, it needs to be replaced with a comparable original equipment. If the catalytic converter replacement is not impregnated with enough precious metals, it will not coincide with the emissions calibration on your vehicle’s computer, and could still signal a catalytic converter efficiency code, which will illuminate your check engine or service engine soon light. When your light is illuminated or if there are current codes stored in the computer of your vehicle it will not pass DEQ.

When your Check Engine or Service Engine light is on. This light is a warning to the driver that their vehicle needs to be diagnosed and repaired. It is not an emergency but should be performed in the near future when you can. When this check engine light is flashing, the condition the computer sees, can do damage to the exhaust of the vehicle. We would not recommend continuing to drive the vehicle. Have it towed to a facility for a diagnosis and repair. Happy Motoring!

When a vehicle hits the 100,000 mile mark and is moving into being a 7 or 8 year old car many consumers wonder if the vehicle is worth a major repair like a replacement engine, transmission, transfer case or other large expensive repairs. The average age of a vehicle on the road per the US Highway Administration is 12 years old.

We recommend that you look at many things when facing that decision:

Has the vehicle been well maintained up to this point?

What kind of shape is the vehicle in, exterior, interior and mechanically?

What is the current value of the vehicle? (This is figured on a car that runs and operates)

Are there other major issues brewing with the vehicle that will need repaired in the near future?

How much do you like the vehicle does it do everything you want and have all the options you want and need?

Are you willing to keep it another 5 years to get the value of the repair back out of the vehicle by using it longer?

A well taken care of and maintained vehicle can hold a more enhanced value, and have greater longevity. It is a stronger candidate for investing in a major repair. If there are a lot of other things wrong with the vehicle you would want to look at those costs also in making the decision. Repairs can exceed the current value of the vehicle, and are not worth it if you choose not to keep the vehicle.

It is usually less expensive to repair a vehicle than to buy a new or sometimes even newer vehicle. But a major repair does not increase the value of the vehicle. If the vehicle were to get stolen or totaled in a car accident you might not get the full amount of the repair factored into the vehicle value.

The average consumer spends about $800 to $1000 annually maintaining, repairing and replacing tires on a vehicle that is over 5 years old. If you are spending more than that, it might be time to consider replacing that vehicle. If you are under that then your current vehicle might be worth investing in and considering a major repair. Happy Motoring!

I mean, it’s running perfectly fine, so why pay all the money for a service when there’s nothing wrong with your car now? Let’s break it down. Manufacturers provide you with vehicle maintenance guidelines for basic services (like oil change, fluids, and tires) and more involved repairs and replacements for components and systems (like transmission, fuel, and coolant systems).

Vehicle Maintenance is a well researched and complicated topic that your vehicle’s manufacturer spends tons of resources on. They want to make sure that their vehicles are affordable to buy and maintain, for individuals and fleets alike. That research is where the recommended time and mileage markers come from, found in your owner’s manual.

Manufacturer Recommended Vehicle Maintenance

In general, the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule allows you to drive your car under normal conditions safely. Once you reach the mileage or time marker (whichever comes first), the recommended service should be performed to maintain the safety and performance of the vehicle. If you drive under more severe conditions (extreme heat and/or cold, heavy traffic, or tow heavy loads), you may need to perform the maintenance earlier than recommended to keep your vehicle safe and performing well.

General Vehicle Maintenance

Sticking to the manufacturer suggested time/mileage markers for routine services is the wisest way to keep your vehicle running at its best. It also avoids the chance of voiding the manufacturer’s warranty for neglect. If you are wondering if you need to do the services earlier (or later) than suggested, talk it over with your trusted service station. A qualified technician can discuss your driving habits and help you make a schedule that works best for you.

Oil Change

Changing the oil and oil filter in your car is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to keep your vehicle running great. The oil in your engine can accumulate contaminants and turn to sludge. This dirty oil loses its ability to properly lubricate the engine’s many components and can cause costly repairs or replacements if left too long. This is a service that should never be skipped.

Fluids and Filters

In addition to maintaining the oil, there are also other fluids and filters that should be checked frequently. The transmission fluid, brake fluid, and coolant/antifreeze should all be well maintained. It is a wise practice to flush and replace these fluids and replace filters when suggested per your owner’s manual, or if suggested by your service technician due to leaks, clogs, or damage.

The engine air filter should be checked and replaced when necessary. A dirty air filter can cause a myriad of issues with your engine and is an inexpensive part to replace. A cabin air filter affects not only the air quality inside your car, but it can improve the output of the air conditioning as well.

Wheels and Tires

I think we can all agree that replacing your tires can be a costly investment. The best way to make your tires last, is to do regular maintenance on them. Keeping your tires properly rotated and your wheels aligned can help prevent uneven tread wear. Checking and maintaining proper air pressure is also important to prolonging tire life. These services are not that expensive when done regularly (check your owner’s manual for the suggested time/mileage markers) and can save you money in the long run.

Repair vs. Replace

As your car ages, making decisions to perform costly repairs or replace it with a new car, can be stressful. Take some time to go over how much the repairs will cost and compare them to how much your car is worth. Good resources to consult for your car’s worth are Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds. They are impartial and unbiased.

A good rule of thumb, if your car is paid off, and the repair is less than half of your car’s worth, keep the car and pay for the repair. If the repair is going to cost you more than half of what the car is worth, then it may be time to upgrade to a new or certified pre-owned car.

Resale Values

Whether you plan on keeping your car forever, or plan to sell it (or trade it in) every 10 years, it is a good practice to keep all your service receipts in a safe place. If you do your own oil changes and filter replacements, keep a notebook of the service performed, the mileage, and the date (with the receipts).

This practice will increase the resale value of your vehicle, and show that it was well maintained throughout its life. It is also a great way to track how often services are performed, how much money you spend yearly on vehicle maintenance, and provide documentation for your taxes (if your vehicle is used for business).

Schedule Your Vehicle Maintenance
