How Often Should You Replace Spark Plugs?

Spark plugs are small components with a big job. They ignite the air-fuel mixture inside your engine’s cylinders, helping your vehicle start, run smoothly, and deliver proper fuel efficiency and performance. Over time, spark plugs wear out, and ignoring them can lead to misfires, rough idling, poor gas mileage, and even costly engine damage.

So how often should you replace spark plugs? The answer depends on your vehicle, the type of spark plugs installed, and your driving habits.

In this guide, we’ll explain how spark plugs work, signs they need replacement, recommended service intervals, and why timely maintenance matters.

What Do Spark Plugs Do?

Spark plugs create the electrical spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture inside your engine. Every time you start your vehicle and drive, the spark plugs fire thousands of times per minute.

Healthy spark plugs help ensure:

Smooth engine performance

Reliable starting

Better fuel economy

Lower emissions

Improved acceleration

Efficient combustion

When spark plugs become worn or dirty, engine performance suffers.

How Often Should Spark Plugs Be Replaced?

Spark plug replacement intervals vary depending on the plug material and vehicle manufacturer recommendations.

Copper Spark Plugs

Copper spark plugs typically last:

20,000 to 30,000 miles

They provide strong performance but wear out faster than newer materials.

Platinum Spark Plugs

Platinum spark plugs usually last:

60,000 to 100,000 miles

These plugs are more durable and commonly used in modern vehicles.

Iridium Spark Plugs

Iridium spark plugs can often last:

80,000 to 120,000 miles

They are highly durable and found in many newer engines.

Always Check Your Owner’s Manual

The best replacement interval for your vehicle is listed in the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

Some vehicles require earlier replacement due to:

Turbocharged engines

High-performance engines

Severe driving conditions

Stop-and-go traffic

Towing or heavy loads

Following the recommended interval helps prevent ignition system problems.

Signs Your Spark Plugs Need Replacement

Even if you haven’t reached the recommended mileage, worn spark plugs often show warning signs.

1. Engine Misfires

One of the most common symptoms is engine misfiring. The engine may hesitate, stumble, or jerk during acceleration.

2. Rough Idling

If your engine vibrates excessively or runs unevenly at idle, worn spark plugs could be the cause.

3. Poor Fuel Economy

Bad spark plugs reduce combustion efficiency, causing the engine to burn more fuel.

4. Hard Starting

A vehicle with worn spark plugs may struggle to start, especially in cold weather.

5. Reduced Acceleration

You may notice sluggish throttle response or decreased engine power.

6. Check Engine Light

Faulty spark plugs can trigger the check engine light due to misfires or ignition issues.

7. Engine Knocking or Hesitation

Improper combustion caused by worn plugs can create knocking sounds or hesitation under load.

What Happens If You Don’t Replace Spark Plugs?

Ignoring worn spark plugs can lead to much bigger problems over time.

Potential issues include:

Damage to ignition coils

Catalytic converter failure

Reduced fuel efficiency

Engine performance loss

Increased emissions

Difficult starting

Severe engine misfires

Replacing spark plugs on time is far cheaper than repairing damage caused by neglect.

Can You Inspect Spark Plugs Yourself?

Yes. Spark plugs can provide valuable clues about engine condition.

When removed, inspect for:

Heavy carbon buildup

Oil fouling

Burned electrodes

Cracked ceramic insulation

Excessive wear

A healthy spark plug typically appears light tan or gray.

If plugs show unusual wear, additional engine issues may need attention.

Should You Replace Ignition Coils Too?

Ignition coils and spark plugs work together. While coils don’t always need replacement with spark plugs, they should be inspected.

Consider coil replacement if you notice:

Persistent misfires

Rough running

Coil-related fault codes

High mileage

Replacing failing coils early can prevent breakdowns.

Tips to Extend Spark Plug Life

You can help your spark plugs last longer by:

Using quality fuel

Following maintenance schedules

Fixing oil leaks promptly

Replacing dirty air filters

Accessing deep spark plug wells

Specialized tools

Proper torque specifications

If you’re unsure, professional installation helps avoid damaged threads or improper gaps.

How will you spend your tax refund this year? Maybe you’re thinking about a new TV, clothes, or a vacation. Those things can be fun, but there’s a smarter way to use that money—take care of your vehicle with preventative car maintenance. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference over time.

Your car is one of the biggest investments you own. According to the National Car Care Council, over $62 billion in vehicle preventative maintenance is skipped every year. That means many drivers are not doing enough to protect their cars, which can lead to avoidable repairs.

How to Take Care of Your Investment

Regular preventative car maintenance helps prevent breakdowns and keeps your car safe and reliable. It can also improve gas mileage and reduce pollution. When you take care of your vehicle, it lasts longer and is worth more if you decide to sell it later.

Skipping maintenance may seem like it saves money, but it usually costs more in the long run. In fact, poorly maintained vehicles can cost more than twice as much to keep running over time, especially when major repairs are needed.

With today’s rising costs, saving money is more important than ever. Instead of buying a new car every few years, keeping your current vehicle in good shape is a smart financial choice. Regular maintenance can help you keep your car moving so you can avoid buying a new car too soon.

Talk to a trusted repair shop about a maintenance schedule that fits your vehicle. You can also check your owner’s manual for recommendations and service intervals specific to your make and model.

Don’t Wait! Schedule Your Preventative Car Maintenance Now

If you want your car to last longer and save money, don’t wait—schedule a maintenance check today with our local Gresham auto repair shop!

As the Arizona sun blazes down, your car’s cooling system faces its toughest challenge. At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ, we know how critical it is to keep your engine running smoothly in the scorching summer heat. Overheating can lead to costly repairs, but with the right maintenance, you can prevent breakdowns and keep your vehicle in top shape.

Why Your Cooling System Matters

Your car’s cooling system is the unsung hero that prevents your engine from overheating. The system regulates engine temperature, dissipates heat, and even provides warmth for your heater in cooler months.

However, in Arizona’s hot summertime temperatures, the cooling system works overtime to combat heat and friction, which can wreak havoc if not properly maintained. Overheating is one of the leading causes of engine failure, costing drivers thousands in repairs. Let’s explore how to avoid this with proactive care.

Preventative Maintenance That Can Keep Your Car from Overheating

1. Check Coolant Levels Safely

One of the simplest yet most critical steps is ensuring your coolant levels are adequate. However, it’s important to remember that you should never open the radiator cap or reservoir when the engine is hot. Doing so can result in severe burns from pressurized, scalding coolant. Instead, check your coolant first thing in the morning when the engine is cold. Look at the reservoir (often a plastic tank near the radiator) and ensure the fluid is between the “min” and “max” lines.

If the reservoir is low, don’t just top it off with any coolant. Using the wrong coolant can cause corrosion, damage seals, and harm plastic components. Always use the manufacturer-recommended coolant for your vehicle—whether it’s a 5-year or 10-year formula. If you’re unsure, bring your car to Good Works Auto Repair, where we stock the exact fluids your vehicle needs.

2. Inspect Hoses and Radiator for Blockages

Airflow is the lifeblood of your cooling system. Debris like bugs, dirt, or road grime can clog your radiator, reducing its ability to cool the engine. After a drive to Tucson or Casa Grande, take a moment to inspect the front of your radiator for obstructions. Gently clean it with a soft brush or low-pressure water, but consult with a professional to avoid damaging sensitive components.

Additionally, check your radiator hoses for signs of pressure or damage. A bulging hose indicates excessive pressure. In contrast, a soft, squeezable hose when the engine is cool suggests it’s safe to inspect further. If you notice cracks or leaks, schedule an appointment at our Tempe auto repair shop for a thorough inspection to prevent small issues from becoming major problems.

3. Pay Attention to Warning Signs

Modern vehicles are equipped with temperature gauges or warning lights to alert you to overheating. If your temperature gauge creeps past the halfway mark or a warning light appears, act immediately. Pull over to a safe spot, turn on your heater to divert heat from the engine (yes, even in summer!), and let the car cool down. Avoid driving further, as even driving a short distance can turn a minor issue into a costly engine repair.

For European cars without visible gauges, watch for warning lights or message center alerts. Ignoring these signals is a common mistake that can lead to catastrophic damage. Stay vigilant and treat any temperature warning as an emergency.

4. Schedule Regular Cooling System Maintenance

We recommend servicing your cooling system every 2-3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This involves flushing the old coolant, inspecting components like the thermostat and water pump, and refilling with the correct coolant. Regular maintenance prevents sediment buildup, which can clog radiators and cause overheating. At Good Works Auto Repair, our certified technicians use advanced diagnostics to ensure your cooling system is ready for Arizona’s harsh summers.

5. Don’t Ignore Modifications or Repairs

Custom grills, aftermarket parts, or minor accidents can disrupt airflow to your radiator. For instance, removing an air dam or misaligning components during a repair can reduce cooling efficiency. If you’ve modified your vehicle or recently had bodywork done on it, have your cooling system checked to ensure proper airflow and alignment.

When fuel costs rise, there’s only one way to ease pain at the pump – improve fuel efficiency. It’s an obvious solution that is immediately followed by a voice in your head that says, “but how?”. Here are four simple ways to answer that question and maximize your mileage every time you get in your car.

Maintain recommended PSI.

Keep your tires inflated at correct PSI. It’s not just a suggestion, it’s a guideline that can increase fuel efficiency by up to 3%. Check your tire pressure when you stop for gas, carry a portable pump in your car, however you maintain tire pressure, you’ll be making the most out of every gallon. Just remember, Meineke can take care of all your tire needs.

Use manufacturer’s recommended grade oil.

There are 11 grades of motor oil in the US. And four varieties. But even with all those choices, there’s one simple rule that can help you choose the right motor oil and improve gas mileage by up to 2% – use the manufacturer’s recommendation. Even easier, bring it to the experts at Meineke and we’ll take care of it for you.

Simple Maintenance.

When your hood goes up, your fuel efficiency can too. By replacing your spark plugs, transmission fluid, and cleaning your air filters you can see an impact on gas mileage – and your local Meineke can help you with all of these.

Wheel Alignment.

Misaligned wheels can reduce gas mileage by up to 10%. If your car naturally pulls to the left or right, a wheel alignment could be the answer. For all-wheel-drive models, a 4-wheel alignment is best. For vehicles with a solid rear axle, a frontend alignment will also work wonders. No one likes fighting their steering wheel. And everyone loves better fuel efficiency. So, getting a wheel alignment is always an easy choice at Meineke.

Whether you do the work yourself, or take your car to your local Meineke, these four tips will help improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. And a small investment now can make a huge impact in the long haul!

The best way to save money on brake repairs and replacements is to get them fixed before damage occurs. If you didn’t know, there’s actually a variety of symptoms to let you know when it’s time for new brakes. However, we tend to see most people wait until they’re brake system starts to fail before having their vehicle inspected or repaired. As brakes are arguably one of the most important aspects to road safety, we’ve gathered some precautionary signs for you:

High Pitch Squealing or Squeaking

The number one indicator for an issue with the braking system is squeaking. If you constantly hear a loud squealing or squeaky noise when you hit your brake pedal, then it is time to get your brakes inspected. The reason for this sound is because the brake pad is worn down and its tab is touching the rotor. This mechanism is an extra precaution in place to let you know when the brake pads are no longer good.

Grinding Noises

Out of all the brake issue indicators, this one has the potential to be the most costly. The grinding noise means you’re beyond the point of the brake pad squealing. This sound can be an issue of the brake pads being completely worn down, lack of brake pads entirely, or several other issues. Typically, the grinding is the sound of your calipers and rotors rubbing, carving grooves into the rotors. At this point, it gets more costly every time you hit the brakes.

Steering Wheel Vibration

If you’re experiencing vibrations throughout your steering wheel column when you hit the brakes, that lets you know it’s your front brake rotors. The common cause for this occurrence are warped brakes. Over time, the heat caused by friction when pressing the brake pads against the rotors will eventually cause the rotors surface to be uneven. Thus, causing less than smooth braking when coming to a stop.

Spongy Brakes

Brakes pedals that have little or no pressure when compressed could be due to a few issues. It could simply be that your brake fluid is a little low but it could also be a telltale sign that there is a leak somewhere in your braking system. If it ends up being the latter, it is of the utmost importance to get your vehicle to a shop for inspection and repair. Without brake fluid correctly getting to the calipers you will be unable to properly stop your car which is highly dangerous to not only yourself but to those around you as well.

Sugarland and Stafford Brake Repair

Whether you’re overdue for a repair or you need an expert opinion, bring your car by our Sugar Land repair shop for any maintenance needs. We’ll check your brakes for free and your brake repairs will be among the best prices you will find anywhere in the Houston metro area. Call, stop by, or request a service today.

Driving in Houston is pretty straight-forward. Everything is flat, it rarely snows and the most dangerous things Houstonians usually have to worry about on the road are rain and unexpected traffic back-ups at Shipley’s Donuts. But during the holidays, a lot of folks hit the road to be with their families, and it’s always a good idea to be prepared for driving outside of your comfort zone.

Prepare Your Car

It’s important to get your car serviced and inspected before a road trip. Topping off fluids, having the brakes and tires inspected, and getting an oil change are all good ways to prevent vehicle failure when far from home. Make sure you have jumper cables and a portable battery charger as well (in addition to the proper sockets or wrenches to remove the battery) in case your battery decides to quit. Check your spare tire to make sure it’s in working order, and make sure you have the jack, tire iron and key that you’ll need for changing a tire if necessary. If you’ve never had to change a tire on your vehicle before, a practice run in your driveway is a great way to make sure you’re not fumbling helplessly on the side of the road.

Winter Driving for Summer People

If you’re heading for colder climates, being prepared for snowy driving conditions is the best way to ensure that your holiday problems begin and end with grandma’s turkey. The most important thing is to maintain proper distance. Leave plenty of room between you and other drivers as snow and ice can make braking and maneuvering more dangerous than normal. Simply take your time and share the road.

Snow chains can be helpful if you don’t want to spend the money on winter tires. While they may reduce fuel efficiency, they provide a crucial increase in traction. In fact, some regions legally require using tire chains, so consult this list of state laws to avoid tickets.

The most important thing to remember when visiting cold weather regions is that danger from exposure is much more common. Severe winter weather can both strand you and make it harder for emergency services to find you. Pack extra blankets, an emergency kit, extra food and water, and some disposable heat packs to help you stay warm. Don’t be careless with your gas usage either. Always keep your tank above half-full so that you don’t run out of fuel the middle of nowhere.

Use This Time to Bond

There’s a reason vacation and road trip movies warm our hearts. Whether it’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation or Little Miss Sunshine, countless movies have shown us that being cooped up in a car on a long journey can be the perfect time to open up. Sure, you’re going to want to have books, movies, and your smartphone on hand, but be sure to talk to your loved ones as well. Remember, beyond the gifts and vacations, the holidays are truly about family.

Let Colony One Get You Ready to Go

At Colony One we’re more than happy to take a look at your vehicle and tell you whether it’s fit for a quick trip across the Lone Star State or a drive to a distant relative in the northern states. Ensure your vehicle is safe by requesting a service today and start your holidays with peace-of-mind.

When it comes to summer driving in Houston, air conditioning is a necessity. It’s easy to take it for granted until you don’t have it. The last thing you want as a Houston driver is to be stuck in traffic with a vehicle’s air conditioning only blowing hot air or worse, no air at all. It’s not just uncomfortable to go without air conditioning, it can be dangerous how quickly and how hot it can cause a vehicle to get. Like most things under the hood of a vehicle, things can stop working for numerous reasons. To put into perspective what may cause your vehicle’s air conditioning to stop functioning properly, we compiled five common reasons that cause air conditioning to stop working.

Refrigerant Leak

Known also as freon, a refrigerant leak is one of the most common causes of vehicle A/C to stop working. A refrigerant leak can occur in any area of the air conditioning system. However, it often occurs within rubber seals or hoses that have been broken down over time. If the leak is allowed to continue, it can cause moisture to seep into the air conditioning system and mix with the refrigerant. When this happens, it can corrode the A/C cooling system and cause permanent damage to your vehicle.

Broken Cooling Fans

When your vehicle’s fans are no longer working properly, air will either be hot or stop flowing altogether. Fans can stop properly cooling the vehicle for numerous reasons. Reasons for this can be an electrical short, a blown fuse, or cracks from road debris.

Compressor Not Functioning Properly

The compressor in your vehicle’s air conditioning system ensures the air is moving. Without the compressor, the refrigerant will not be able to circulate, and that will prevent the air conditioning system from cooling. A common reason for a compressor to stop functioning properly is long periods of the air conditioning going unused. Long periods of not being used can cause a shock to the compressor when it is used again. Another common reason for the compressor to stop functioning is if the compressor clutch gets stuck on the off position. If it is stuck in the off position, it will stop the compressor from engaging.

Blocked or Broken Condenser

The condenser plays a crucial role when it comes to the air conditioning system. As you drive your vehicle, the air that passes through the front of the vehicle is depressurized, cooled, and liquefied. Through that process, it cools the air. Reasons the condenser could not be working would be that it is blocked by road debris, the condenser is punctured, or equipment failure.

Electrical Issues

Numerous issues can cause electrical problems to arise in your vehicle’s air conditioning system. Some of these problems can be blown fuses, failed switches, frayed or broken wires. Fuses may short out and cause the air conditioning system to stop functioning properly. Loose wires or broken wires can also cause the air conditioning system to short out.

If your vehicle is experiencing issues with its air conditioning system, be sure to bring it into Colony One Auto Center. Our experienced and trained technicians will diagnose and repair your vehicle adequately and accurately. For more information, visit our A/C repair page or contact us online to schedule an appointment.

The sun is out, the grass is green and we’re all tired of sitting inside. The open roads are calling your name and are looking to take you away. Before you set out, make sure you and your car are ready for the long trip ahead.

4 Questions to Ask While You Plan:

What kind of conditions will you encounter, and can your car handle them?

How many miles do you want to put on your car and how many miles are you comfortable driving in one day?

What’s your game plan if something happens to your car? (Meineke Rewards Members receive free towing – keep this number handy 844-888-8697)

Is your car ready for your road trip?

To check if your car is ready for your great escape, a check-up should include the following:

The 6 Essential Fluids

Engine Oil should be checked every 1,000 to 3,000 miles with a new filter replacement every oil change.

Low Engine Coolant can cause overheating, especially in hot weather when you have a fully loaded vehicle.

Change your Brake Fluid if the brake pedal starts to feel soft and spongy or approximately every 24,000 miles.

Power Steering Fluid should be replaced annually to extend the life of your Steering gear and Power Steering pump.

Check the Transmission Fluid whenever you get an oil change and replaced according to the manufacturer’s scheduled maintenance.

Remember the importance of fresh wipers and Windshield Washer Fluid to ensure a safe driving experience during weather events.

Tires

Air Pressure should be checked at least every 1000 miles. To be on the safe side, check visually at every stop.

A Rotation should be done every 5,000 to 8,000 miles or sooner if you notice uneven wear.

The Condition of your tires should be checked for noticeable damages. Uneven tread wear and odd wear patterns mean that a checkup is overdue.

Wheel Alignment check will extend tire life and fuel mileage.

General Maintenance

Brake Pads can last between 25,000 to 50,000 miles before they wear thin. You should have them checked at every oil change.

Air Filters, both in the engine and cabin, should be replaced every 10,000 to 15,000 miles or as suggested in the owners’ manual.

Light Bulbs are easy to look over until you’re driving in the dark. Make sure to check all lights before you take off.

Belts and Hoses should get a quick check over for any cracks or fraying, especially inside the belt.

If the Battery is over two years old, check and clean corrosive build-up on the cables.

Stop by your independently owned & operated Meineke shop for a FREE Road Trip Check before you take off this summer. And if you find yourself in need of a fix on your trip, Meineke has a network of locations across the U.S. and Canada with the same great service you’re used to.
