The automotive industry has long been considered a male-dominated field—but that narrative is steadily changing. Today, more women are entering automotive-related careers, bringing fresh perspectives, strong communication skills, and a customer-first mindset that is reshaping the industry for the better.

Here, we’ll explore the rise of women in the automotive world, why the industry needs more female professionals, career opportunities available, and how to get started. We’ll also spotlight a real-world success story right here at Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ—Service Advisor Jennifer Hayward—who is helping redefine the area’s perception of what it means to work in auto repair.

Women in the Automotive Industry: By the Numbers

Despite growing interest, women remain significantly underrepresented in auto repair roles.

Women make up only about 1.8% of automotive service technicians and mechanics in the U.S. as of 2025

Over the past decade, that percentage has fluctuated between roughly 1% and 3%, showing slow but steady change

Across all installation, maintenance, and repair occupations, women represent just a small minority of the workforce

Organizations like the Auto Care Association continue to promote diversity and inclusion, helping create more opportunities for women to enter and thrive in the field.

Why the Auto Repair Industry Needs More Women

Increasing female representation in auto repair isn’t just about fairness—it’s about improving the industry as a whole.

1. Better Customer Experience

Many customers—especially women—feel intimidated when visiting an auto repair shop. Female professionals often help create a more welcoming and transparent environment.

Jennifer Hayward, Service Advisor here at Good Works Auto Repair, explained that this is one of the biggest reasons she got into the field in the first place. “I wanted to be on the front lines of changing the experience women have when they visit an auto repair shop”, Jennifer shared.

2. Strong Communication Skills

Auto repair can be complex, but clear communication builds trust between customers and automotive professionals.

To help customers feel more comfortable here at Good Works Auto Repair, Jennifer says, “I acknowledge that cars can be confusing and focus on translating the technician’s explanations into terms that are easier for the customer to understand.”

3. Diverse Perspectives

Diverse teams lead to better problem-solving, improved workplace culture, and stronger customer relationships.

Career Opportunities for Women in the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry offers a wide range of career paths beyond turning wrenches. Here are just a few examples, along with their primary responsibilities:

Service Advisor – Customer-facing role explaining repairs and coordinating service

Automotive Technician/Mechanic – Diagnosing and repairing vehicles

Shop Manager or Owner – Leading operations and business strategy

Parts Specialist – Managing inventory and sourcing components

Automotive Engineer – Designing and improving vehicle systems

Collision Repair Technician – Restoring vehicles after accidents

Customer Experience Specialist – Enhancing the service journey

When asked about the biggest misconception people have about working in an auto repair shop, Jennifer replied: “That you must have extensive technical knowledge about cars to be successful. I am proof that it is more about what you are willing to learn once you are on the job.”

In other words, you don’t have to know everything to get started, but you DO need a strong willingness to learn.

Here at Good Works Auto Repair, Jennifer Hayward is just one of our amazing team members making an impact on Tempe-area customers every single day. When we asked why and how she got to where she is today, here’s what she had to say …

What first made you interested in the automotive world?

“Watching my dad work on cars throughout my life definitely sparked my interest in pursuing a career in the automotive industry.”

What are the most rewarding parts of your job?

“I love being able to explain and show people the important repairs their vehicles need. It’s rewarding to help make their service affordable and ensure they know their car is being cared for as if it were our own.”

Have you ever encountered a customer who was surprised to see a woman behind the service desk?

“It happens from time to time, but I enjoy bringing female energy to a male-dominated industry. I communicate with professionalism and demonstrate why I am more than capable of handling this role.”

Being a Service Advisor is part technical knowledge and part “people skills.” Which of these do you think is more important, and why?

“I believe people skills are even more important than technical knowledge. While both are essential, being empathetic and making customers feel heard and valued is key.”

If a young woman is hesitant to join the automotive industry because she’s afraid she won’t “fit in,” what would you say to her?

“Pave your own way! My workspace is filled with things that bring color and life to the shop, including pink decor, LEGO flower bouquets in a disco ball vase, family photos, and affirmations.”

What is one “pro-tip” every car owner should know that you’ve learned from being on the inside?

“Staying on top of minor routine maintenance can save you thousands of dollars by preventing much more costly repairs down the road.”

How Women Can Get Started in the Automotive Industry

If you’re a woman interested in breaking into auto repair, there are more resources than ever before to help you succeed.

1. Education and Training

Consider enrolling in:

Technical schools

Community college automotive programs

Manufacturer certification programs

2. Scholarships for Women Pursuing Automotive Industry Careers

Financial assistance is available through programs like the Women in Auto Care Scholarship offered by the Auto Care Association.

3. Networking and Mentorship

Join organizations like:

Women in Auto Care community

Automotive trade associations

Local networking groups

4. Build Key Skills

Jennifer recommends focusing on:

Clear, concise communication

Understanding people and exceptional customer service

Willingness to learn

Basic mechanical knowledge

The Future of Women in Auto Repair and the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is evolving rapidly—with advancements in electric vehicles, diagnostics, and customer experience. This evolution creates new opportunities for women to step in and lead.

Shops like ours here at Good Works Auto Repair are proud to be part of that change, fostering an inclusive environment where team members of all backgrounds can thrive.

The bottom line is that women are not just entering the auto repair industry—they’re transforming it. From improving customer communication to redefining shop culture, their impact is undeniable.

If you’re searching for timing belt replacement in Tempe, it’s likely you’ve heard how serious this service can be — and for good reason. A worn or broken timing belt can cause catastrophic engine damage, leaving you with repairs that cost thousands of dollars.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we help Tempe drivers stay ahead of expensive breakdowns with proactive, manufacturer-recommended timing belt replacement. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Timing Belt and What Does It Do?

Your timing belt is a reinforced rubber belt located inside your engine. Its job is to synchronize the rotation of the:

Crankshaft

Camshaft(s)

This precise timing allows the engine’s valves to open and close at exactly the right moment as the pistons move up and down.

If that timing is even slightly off, your engine won’t run properly. If the belt breaks entirely, the pistons and valves can collide. That can mean:

Bent valves

Damaged pistons

Cylinder head damage

Complete engine failure

In other words, timing belt replacement isn’t just routine maintenance — it’s critical preventative maintenance.

Timing Belt vs. Timing Chain — What’s the Difference?

Many Tempe drivers ask whether their vehicle has a timing belt or a timing chain. Here’s the difference …

Timing Belt

Made of reinforced rubber

Quieter operation

Requires scheduled replacement

Typically replaced between 60,000–100,000+ miles (varies by manufacturer)

Timing Chain

Made of metal

Designed to last longer

Lubricated by engine oil

Can still fail if neglected or poorly maintained

While timing chains often last longer, they are not “lifetime” components. Both systems require proper maintenance.

If you’re unsure which your vehicle has, our team at Good Works Auto Repair, your trusted auto repair shop in Tempe, can check for you.

How Do You Know When a Timing Belt Is Bad?

The tricky part about timing belts is that they often fail without much warning.

Some possible signs of a failing timing belt include:

Ticking noise from the engine

Engine misfires

Rough idling

Oil leaking from the front of the motor

Check engine light comes on

However, many timing belts show no obvious symptoms before breaking.

In a recent YouTube video, Glen (the proud owner of Good Works Auto Repair here in Tempe, AZ) explained the real danger of ignoring a worn-out belt. Here, you’ll see how a belt can look “okay” from the outside while internal fibers are already deteriorating. Once it snaps, the damage is immediate and severe.

This is why Tempe drivers should never rely solely on visible timing belt wear — mileage intervals matter.

When Should a Timing Belt Be Replaced?

Timing belt replacement intervals vary depending on:

Vehicle make and model

Engine type

Driving conditions

Manufacturer recommendations

Most vehicles require replacement between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, though some newer models extend beyond that.

If you drive in extreme heat, like we experience here in Tempe, AZ, that can accelerate rubber deterioration. Arizona’s climate can be especially hard on belts and cooling system components.

If you’re wondering where to get a timing belt replacement in Tempe, the answer is simple: choose an experienced, reputable shop like Good Works Auto Repair that follows manufacturer guidelines carefully.

How Much Does a Timing Belt Replacement Cost?

Timing belt replacement cost depends on:

Your vehicle’s engine design

Parts required (belt, tensioner, idler pulleys)

Whether the water pump is replaced at the same time

Labor time

In general, timing belt replacement can range anywhere from several hundred to over a thousand dollars.

While that may seem significant, it’s a fraction of the cost of engine replacement if the belt fails. Proactive timing belt replacement is one of the smartest investments Tempe drivers can make in their vehicle.

Why Timing Belt Replacement Is Critical Preventative Maintenance

Timing belt service isn’t something you ignore and put off for another day.

Proactive timing belt replacement:

Prevents catastrophic engine damage

Protects your vehicle investment

Helps prevent unexpected breakdowns

Saves thousands in potential repairs

At Good Works Auto Repair, we always check manufacturer service intervals and inspect related components, including:

Tensioners

Idler pulleys

Seals

Water pump (often recommended at the same time)

Replacing these components together helps ensure long-term reliability.

Looking for an Auto Repair Shop in Tempe for Timing Belt Replacement?

When it comes to timing belt replacement in Tempe, experience matters.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we:

Follow the manufacturer’s service intervals

Use high-quality replacement parts

Inspect surrounding components

Explain everything clearly before we begin work

Help Tempe drivers plan preventative maintenance so they know what’s coming up and can budget accordingly

We believe in catching problems early — before they turn into roadside emergencies.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late: Replace Your Timing Belt Now

If your vehicle is approaching its recommended interval, or if you’re unsure when your timing belt was last replaced, now is the time to act.

Ignoring a worn-out belt can lead to sudden engine failure, just like Glen demonstrated in his video. A small preventative service today can prevent a massive repair tomorrow.

If you’re searching for:

Timing belt replacement in Tempe

When your vehicle starts acting up, it’s normal to wonder whether you should repair your car or replace it altogether. With today’s high new-car prices and rising interest rates, the decision matters more than ever. The good news? Many vehicles still have plenty of life left, especially when they receive regular preventative maintenance and high-quality repairs.

5 Ways to Know if You Should Repair Your Car or Get a New One

Here, we’ll walk you through how to decide whether it’s smarter to keep your current car on the road or start shopping for something new.

1. Start With a Full Vehicle Health Inspection

Before deciding whether to repair your car or replace it, you need accurate information. A professional inspection gives you a clear picture of your car’s current condition, upcoming maintenance needs, and potential future repairs.

At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, we provide detailed car health inspections that outline:

The overall condition of major systems

Repairs that need attention now

Items that can wait

How much useful life is left in key components

Armed with this information, you can make a confident, informed decision—not a guess.

2. Compare Repair Costs vs. Replacement Costs

One of the biggest factors in deciding whether to repair your car is how repair costs compare to buying new.

It’s usually smarter to repair your car when:

The needed repairs cost less than half the value of the vehicle

Your car is paid off

The repairs will significantly extend your vehicle’s lifespan

The vehicle has a strong maintenance history

It may be better to replace your car when:

Repairs exceed the value of the vehicle

You’re facing major engine or transmission failure

Safety is compromised, and repairs won’t reliably fix it

You’ve skipped years of maintenanc,e and damage has added up

A trusted auto repair shop will guide you through these numbers, not pressure you toward one option or the other.

Watch this podcast to see what our local automotive professionals recommend when comparing cost and value:

Value: When Does It Make Sense to Repair Your Car Rather Than Buy New?" width="1080" height="608" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zfPAEHNqVoU?feature=oembed" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen>

3. Consider the Power of Preventative Maintenance

Regular preventative maintenance does more than just keep your car running well. It also preserves its value. When you stay on top of oil changes, fluid flushes, brake checks, and routine inspections, you:

Reduce the risk of expensive breakdowns

Improve safety and reliability

Increase resale or trade-in value

Maximize fuel efficiency

Extend the overall life of your vehicle

Many drivers are surprised at how much longer their vehicle lasts when they prioritize maintenance.

4. Evaluate Your Car’s Long-Term Reliability

Even an older vehicle may still have years of reliable use left if it’s been well cared for. On the other hand, a newer car with a history of neglect may already be showing signs of premature wear.

Ask yourself:

Does your vehicle typically start easily and run smoothly?

Are there recurring problems that keep coming back?

Have you maintained it regularly over the years?

A reliable shop can help you evaluate whether small investments now will continue paying off later.

Choosing whether to repair your car or replace it shouldn’t feel overwhelming. But the key is having honest professionals on your side.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we pride ourselves on providing:

Thorough car health inspections

When your vehicle is included in a recall, it can feel overwhelming. But knowing the right steps to take and having a trusted mechanic on your side makes all the difference. At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ, we’re here to walk you through what to do when your car, truck, or SUV is under recall, so you can stay safe on the road and avoid unnecessary costs or disruptions.

How to Handle a Vehicle Recall: What You Need to Know and What You Need to Do

1. Understand what a vehicle recall means.

A vehicle recall means the manufacturer (or the federal safety agency) has identified a defect that may impact safety, emissions, or reliability. As a result, they are offering a free repair. It’s not just a suggestion—it’s a safety action.

For example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently expanded its probe into about 286,000 vehicles from General Motors over a possible engine failure issue. This case illustrates the severity of recalls and the importance of swift action.

Watch or listen to this podcast to learn more:

2. Check if your vehicle is affected.

First, visit the manufacturer’s recall site or the NHTSA website and enter your VIN (vehicle identification number) to see if your vehicle is listed. You can also contact us at Good Works Auto Repair, and we can help you check. Then, be sure to sign up for alerts or notifications for your model year, make, and engine type.

3. Stay informed and act quickly if your vehicle is affected by a recall.

Staying informed is critical to your ability to continue driving safely. If you get a vehicle recall notice in the mail, act quickly and don’t ignore it. And if you’ve moved since purchasing a new vehicle, or if you purchased your vehicle used, make a point to check for open recalls on the NHTSA’s website periodically.

Watch or listen to this podcast to learn more:

4. Understand your rights and what a recall repair should cost.

Because vehicle recalls are for safety, the manufacturer must repair or replace the affected parts free of charge (or provide an approved remedy) for eligible vehicles. You should not be charged for the recall repair itself.

Be aware of what’s covered: parts, labor, towing (sometimes), and rental car expenses might be involved, depending on manufacturer policy. Also note that in some cases, you may have your vehicle repaired at your local auto repair shop, only to discover later that a recall should have covered the issue. In this case, check with the manufacturer to see if you can get reimbursed for repairs already made.

5. Choose the right service provider.

Recalls will typically direct you to have repairs completed at an authorized dealer, a shop that you may not regularly go to for service. This way, manufacturers can accurately track which vehicles have been fixed under the recall. For extra peace of mind, there’s nothing wrong with taking your vehicle to your trusted mechanic for a follow-up inspection after the recall repair.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we can:

Confirm that the recall repair has been correctly performed

Check for any related issues (e.g., collateral damage)

Let you know if there are any other immediate repair or maintenance concerns

6. After the recall repair: follow-up maintenance

Once your vehicle has been fixed under recall, it’s still smart to monitor it:

Keep service records and proof of the recall fix

Let your trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle periodically for engine, transmission, or other systems that may have been stressed by the defect

Stay alert for any new problems: strange noises, performance loss, warning lights, etc.

7. Why it’s especially important to pay attention to vehicle recalls if you live in Tempe or the Phoenix metro area

Here in the Tempe-Phoenix region, the stress of heat, driving conditions, and mileage is real. A defect left unrepaired in a hot climate can deteriorate more rapidly. At Good Works Auto Repair, our Tempe mechanics understand local conditions and can help you navigate the recall process smoothly, allowing you to continue driving safely and efficiently.

8. Bottom line — Don’t ignore a recall.

When your vehicle has a recall, don’t ignore it—your safety, and the safety of others, is at stake. Use your VIN to check for open recalls, act promptly, understand your rights, and select a trusted service provider. At Good Works Auto Repair, we’re ready to help you through each step, from checking recall status to ensuring the repair is completed correctly and maintained.

Schedule an appointment with us today if your vehicle needs service or if you’ve received a recall notice and want a second opinion.

What's really behind rising auto repair bills, and how does it connect to the bigger economic picture?

The post From Parts to Labor: What’s Really Driving Up Your Auto Repair Bills appeared first on Good Works Auto Repair Tempe.

If you’ve noticed your vehicle maintenance costs or auto repair bills creeping up lately, you’re not imagining it. According to fresh data from the Consumer Price Index, auto repair costs skyrocketed 5% in just one month (August 2025) and they’re now 15% higher than they were last year. That’s the biggest single-month jump on record!

At Good Works Auto Repair, we’re hearing customers wonder about this every day, and it’s time to answer a few questions. What’s really behind rising auto repair bills, and how does it connect to the bigger economic picture? Here, we’ll break it all down and also explain why sticking with your current ride might still be a smart move.

What Are the Main Culprits Behind Higher Auto Repair Bills?

1. Tariffs on Car Parts

Back in May 2025, a 25% tariff kicked in on imported auto parts—and guess what? Most vehicle parts aren’t made in the USA, even if you’re driving a “Made in America” brand like Ford or Chevy. Many parts are sourced from Mexico, China, or other parts of the globe. This has significantly impacted vehicle maintenance and repair bills as auto repair shops like ours have no choice but to pass some of that additional cost on to customers.

2. Older Vehicles

It’s not just tariffs that are causing a spike in auto repair bills. Our vehicles are getting older. In fact, the average age of vehicles on the road in the U.S. hit 12.8 years this year, up from 12.6 last year. Older cars mean more wear and tear, leading to pricier repairs, such as transmission overhauls or engine rebuilds.

3. Increased Labor Costs

Nationwide, there’s a shortage of skilled automotive technicians. According to some sources, this led to a 7% wage increase last year alone. With labor making up approximately 60% of a repair bill, it’s no surprise that auto repair bill totals have jumped up significantly.

4. Modern Vehicles

We all love the enhanced features that modern cars come with, but that also means they’re packed with technology that requires specialized, expensive parts.

Add all these factors together, and it’s a perfect storm that often equates to paying more every time you visit your local mechanic.

How Rising Auto Repair Bills Fit Into the Bigger Economic Puzzle

When you zoom out a little and take a look at the big picture, it’s easy to see that car repairs aren’t the only thing pinching wallets these days. Inflation has affected everything, from groceries to gas, and many Americans are feeling the squeeze on their household finances.

New car prices – In August 2025, they averaged just over $49,000, according to Kelley Blue Book figures reported by Cox Automotive.

Used car prices – In August 2025, they averaged just over $29,000, according to JD Power.

High interest rates – This results in brutal monthly payments, with over 15% of new car loans exceeding $1,000 a month.

No wonder so many people are holding onto their rides longer instead of trading up. It’s all connected: pricier new cars, tougher loans, and more repairs on aging vehicles result in higher parts and labor costs. You might as well fix what you have because replacing it won’t be cheap either!

What We’re Doing at Our Tempe Auto Repair Shop to Keep Auto Repairs and Maintenance Affordable

At Good Works Auto Repair, we can’t wave a magic wand over global tariffs or labor shortages (we wish), but we’re fighting back where we can.

Our 5-year/60,000-mile warranty on all major repairs means you’re protected long-term, so no surprise repeat visits.

New customers: Text NEW10 to 480-894-0018 for 10% off your first visit.

We offer buy-now-pay-later financing to spread out costs for expensive auto repairs.

Our free rewards program hooks you up with perks on future services.

Watch for monthly specials where we offer big savings on specific auto repair or maintenance items.

We’re also big on transparency—our service advisors don’t try to upsell you on unnecessary services, just what your car truly needs. And with free pick-up and drop-off, getting service is hassle-free. That said, we’re at the mercy of rising part prices and labor costs, too—we absorb what we can, but some increases are unavoidable. Our goal? Keep your wallet intact while getting you back on the road safely.

Should You Repair Your Used Vehicle or Buy a New One to Save on Rising Auto Repair Bills?

So, is it time to ditch your trusted sidekick for something new and shiny? You might want to pause and consider a few factors first.

Buying a new vehicle typically costs way more upfront. Plus, with current market conditions, you’re likely to lock in a pricey car loan with a less-than-ideal interest rate.

How about maintaining your current vehicle? It’s typically cheaper to repair your used vehicle vs. buying a new one, especially if you look at the cost over several years. For example, a $1,500 transmission fix pales next to $48,000 for a new SUV (before interest). Plus, with regular preventative maintenance services, like routine oil changes, it’s often possible to catch issues early, saving you even more.

The bottom line is that in this economy, smart maintenance wins. Schedule an appointment with us today and let’s keep your car running affordably—one honest repair at a time.

As residents of the Grand Canyon State know all too well, Arizona’s weather can shift dramatically, especially during monsoon season. If you’re searching for reliable driving tips for monsoon season, you’ve come to the right place. In this blog, we’ll explain what monsoon season entails, its effects on road safety, and practical advice to keep you secure behind the wheel. Plus, we’ll cover key vehicle maintenance steps to prepare your car for the challenges of the season.

Understanding Monsoon Season in Arizona

Monsoon season in Arizona officially spans from June 15th to September 30th each year, though the exact timing can vary slightly based on weather patterns. The term “monsoon” refers to a seasonal wind shift that brings moist air from the Gulf of America and the Pacific Ocean into the Southwest, leading to a surge in humidity and precipitation. This results in intense thunderstorms, heavy downpours, lightning, hail, and even massive dust storms known as haboobs.

These weather events significantly impact driving conditions. Heavy rains can cause flash flooding, turning dry washes and low-lying areas into raging torrents in minutes. Roads become slick from a mix of oil residue and water, increasing the risk of hydroplaning. Dust storms reduce visibility to near zero, while high winds can blow debris or even topple trees and power lines. Overall, monsoon season heightens the chances of accidents due to poor traction, limited sightlines, and unpredictable hazards.

Preventative Vehicle Maintenance Before Monsoon Season

Preparation is key to safe driving during monsoon season. Even before the first storms hit, it’s wise to prioritize these preventative maintenance items to ensure your vehicle is monsoon-ready:

Tires: Check tread depth and inflation levels. Worn tires lose grip on wet roads, so consider replacing them if needed.

Brakes: Inspect pads, rotors, and fluid. Wet conditions demand responsive braking to avoid skids.

Wipers and Windshield: Replace worn wiper blades and ensure your windshield is free of cracks that could worsen in heavy rain.

Lights and Signals: Test headlights, taillights, and turn signals. Visibility is crucial in storms, so clean lenses and replace dim bulbs.

Battery and Electrical System: Monsoon humidity can strain your battery; have it tested to prevent breakdowns.

Suspension and Alignment: Ensure proper alignment to maintain control on uneven, flooded roads.

At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ, we specialize in thorough inspections tailored to Arizona’s unique climate. Schedule your preventative maintenance with us today—our goal is to keep your vehicle safe all year long, not just during monsoon peaks.

Safe Driving Tips During Monsoon Season

Once the rains arrive, adapt your habits with these driving tips for monsoon season:

Slow Down and Increase Distance: Reduce speed by at least 10-15 mph in rain to combat hydroplaning. Maintain a following distance of at least four seconds from the vehicle ahead.

Use Headlights: Always turn on low beams during storms for better visibility—it’s the law in Arizona when wipers are in use.

Avoid Flooded Areas: Never drive through standing water; even six inches can sweep away a car. Remember the mantra: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

Handle Dust Storms Safely: If caught in a haboob, pull off the road as far as possible, turn off lights, and set your emergency brake to avoid collisions.

Stay Alert for Debris: Watch for fallen branches, rocks, or mudslides, especially in rural or mountainous areas.

Limit Distractions: Focus solely on the road—skip phone use and keep music low to hear thunder or sirens.

By following these tips, you’ll navigate monsoon challenges with confidence.

Post-Monsoon Season Vehicle Maintenance and Ongoing Safety

After the season winds down, don’t neglect your vehicle. Inspect for water damage, clean the undercarriage to remove mud buildup, and recheck tires for uneven wear from wet driving. This prevents long-term issues like rust or alignment problems.

Remember, monsoon season is just one part of Arizona’s driving landscape. At Good Works Auto Repair in Tempe, AZ, our expert team is dedicated to year-round vehicle safety through customized services. Whether it’s a pre-monsoon tune-up or post-season check, schedule an appointment today. We’re here to ensure your car performs reliably, rain or shine. Stay safe out there!

Learn How to Save Money by Staying on Top of Car Care!

At Good Works Auto Repair, we get it—life gets busy, and routine vehicle maintenance can feel like just another thing on your to-do list. But skipping those oil changes, tire rotations, or AC checks can cost you way more than you might think. Let’s take a look at why keeping up with routine vehicle maintenance is a smart move for your wallet, your car, and your peace of mind.

What Are the Consequences of Neglecting Your Car?

You might think, “Oh, I’ll just skip this oil change—it’s not a big deal.” But unfortunately, skipping something as simple as an oil change can lead to some pretty shocking consequences.

Watch this video to see what happened when one of our customers let their 2005 Toyota Avalon go 13,000 miles without an oil change!

When you skip routine vehicle maintenance like oil changes, the oil in your engine breaks down. The result? A thick, gritty sludge develops that can clog critical components, cause your engine to overheat, and even lead to total engine failure. If you think a $50-$100 oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles is too expensive or isn’t important, try replacing an engine. That’s a bill that can easily run into the thousands.

The Domino Effect of Skipping Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Neglecting routine vehicle maintenance doesn’t just stop at one problem—it creates a domino effect.

For example, let’s say you skip a brake inspection. Worn brake pads can damage your rotors, leading to a more expensive repair than simply replacing the pads.

Or, take your vehicle’s air conditioning system. Watch this video to see exactly what happens when you skip routine AC service:

A clogged radiator or evaporator can reduce airflow, overwork your AC, and cause it to leak refrigerant. Suddenly, you’re not just sweating in a hot car. Instead, you’re looking at a repair bill that could’ve been avoided with a $150-$200 cleaning.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we offer a range of routine vehicle maintenance services to keep these issues at bay, including:

Oil changes to keep your engine running smoothly.

Brake inspections and service to ensure safe stopping power.

Tire rotations and alignments for even wear and better fuel efficiency.

AC system checks to keep you cool in Tempe’s scorching heat.

Cooling system maintenance to prevent overheating.

Skipping these services might save you a little time or money upfront, but the hidden costs add up fast.

What’s the REAL Cost of Neglecting Routine Vehicle Maintenance?

Remember: A small issue ignored today can turn into a major repair tomorrow. Here, we’ll break down some of the hidden costs of skipping routine vehicle maintenance:

Reduced Fuel Efficiency: Dirty air filters or misaligned tires can make your car work harder, burning more gas. Regular maintenance, such as air filter replacements and wheel alignments, can help you save money at the pump.

Premature Part Wear: Neglecting one system, like your cooling system, can strain others, like your AC or engine. This shortens the lifespan of expensive components.

Safety Risks: Faulty brakes or worn tires increase your risk of accidents, which could lead to costly repairs, medical bills, or worse.

Lower Resale Value: A car with a spotty maintenance history is worth less when you sell it. Keeping up with routine vehicle maintenance, with records to prove it, can boost your car’s resale value.

Picture this: you’re cruising down the road with the sun blazing, your AC cranking, and suddenly—clunk—your car starts making a strange noise you’ve never heard before. You know it needs a trip to the mechanic, but your wallet’s feeling a little on the light side. Sound familiar? Unexpected car repairs can hit hard, especially when you’re not prepared for the cost. But here’s the good news: auto repair payment plans can save the day and help you get the repairs you need without the financial stress.

If you’re wondering, “Do auto repair shops offer payment plans?” or “Can you finance car repairs?”, the answer is yes! At Good Works Auto Repair, we offer flexible auto repair payment plans that let you spread out the cost of repairs over time.

Here, we’ll explain how these plans work, why they’re a game-changer for your budget, and how we make it easy to keep your car on the road.

Why Auto Repair Payment Plans Matter

Car repairs don’t always come at a convenient time. Whether it’s worn-out brakes or an AC that decides to stop working in the middle of an Arizona summer, major repairs can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. And, according to a 2024 survey by MarketWatch, over 36% of Americans are not able to afford an unexpected repair over $500. That’s where auto repair payment plans come in—they let you tackle those repairs now and pay later, keeping your budget intact and your car running smoothly.

At Good Works Auto Repair, we know that your car is your lifeline for work, family, and life in the fast-paced Phoenix metro area. That’s why we’ve partnered with three top-quality financing companies—Koalafi, Synchrony Car Care, and EasyPay Finance—to offer auto repair installment plans that fit your needs, even if your credit isn’t perfect.

Living in Arizona, we know one thing for sure: air conditioning isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. That goes for your car, too. If you’ve ever climbed into a car that’s been baking in the sun and cranked the AC only to be met with warm air, you know exactly how uncomfortable—and even dangerous—that can be.

Let’s dive into some of the most common questions people have about car AC repair, and why regular auto air conditioning service is important, even when your system seems to be working just fine.

FAQs About Car AC Repair and Service

1. Why is My Car’s AC Blowing Warm Air?

If your car’s AC is suddenly struggling to cool things down, a few issues could be at play:

Low refrigerant – This is the most common cause of weak or warm airflow. Refrigerant naturally leaks over time, and without enough of it, your system can’t cool the air effectively.

Clogged cabin air filter – If the filter is dirty or clogged, airflow is restricted, making it harder for cold air to get through.

Don’t think your cabin air filter needs to be changed? Watch this video to see why it’s absolutely essential:

Compressor problems – The compressor is the heart of your automotive AC system. If it’s malfunctioning, you’re not going to get any cool air.

Electrical issues – Faulty fuses, relays, or sensors can cause the AC system to shut down completely or work intermittently.

2. My Car AC Seems Fine—Do I Still Need Service?

Yes! Just like you get regular oil changes and tire rotations, auto AC service should be part of your car’s routine maintenance schedule. Here’s why:

Preventative maintenance saves money – Catching a small leak or minor issue early can prevent a much more expensive car AC repair down the line.

Peak performance – Even if your vehicle’s AC is blowing cold air now, skipping regular service can lead to gradual performance loss you might not notice until it’s really hot outside.

Better air quality – Routine auto air conditioning service includes checking and replacing filters, which helps remove dust, pollen, and other allergens from the air inside your car.

Watch this video to see what happens when you don’t schedule regular AC service and catch small problems before they become bigger ones:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=135&v=2vdpDopdljs&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fgoodworksautorepair.com%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY

3. How Often Should I Get Auto AC Service?

In a place like Arizona, we recommend getting your car’s AC inspected at least once a year, ideally in the spring before the temperatures soar. (Hint: That means right NOW!) A thorough AC inspection includes:

Refrigerant level checks

Leak detection

Compressor and belt inspection

Cabin air filter replacement

System pressure testing

Newcomers to the Phoenix, AZ area are often glued to their GPS devices, trying to learn how to navigate the valley freeways that weave through cityscapes and desert vistas. Listening to your GPS, you’ll hear highway names like I-17, I-10, State Route 51, and more. But driving with the locals? You’re more likely to hear something along the lines of “Sorry I’m late … I got stuck at the Broadway Curve!” Valley Freeway Nicknames can be confusing, especially to newcomers.

The truth is, the greater Phoenix area is full of freeway nicknames. While they make perfect sense to drivers who’ve been around a while, they could be a little confusing to those who don’t know the area so well. Today, we’ll walk you through a few of the most common valley freeway nicknames so you can drive like a local and know where you’re going while you’re at it!

6 Valley Freeway Nicknames and Where They Came From

1. The Maricopa Freeway (I-17, I-10, and Loop 202)

Nickname: The Stack

Why the Nickname: Where I-10 and I-17 meet, forming a stack-like interchange, locals commonly refer to this complex network of ramps and overpasses as “The Stack.” It’s a critical juncture in the Phoenix highway system.

2. The Intersection of I-17 and Loop 101

Nickname: The North Stack

Why the Nickname: This is a four-level, stack-like interchange that is located north of Bell Road and “The Stack”, hence its name.

3. The Intersection of The Papago Freeway (I-10), State Route 51, and Loop 202

Nickname: The Mini-Stack

Why the Nickname: We’re not exactly sure where the “mini” part of the nickname came from, but perhaps it was just to differentiate it from the other “stacks” in the area. This one is another four-level interchange, located east of “The Stack” and at the juncture of I-10, State Route 51, and Loop 202.

4. I-10 near the Tempe-Phoenix border

Nickname: Broadway Curve

Why the Nickname: Aptly named for its location near Broadway Road, this sharp curve often presents a bottle-neck for motorists passing through the area at rush hour.

5. US Highway 60

Nickname: The Superstition Speedway

Why the Nickname: Named after the nearby Superstition Mountains, US 60 offers a scenic drive and a direct route to the stunning Apache Trail (the perfect road trip destination). The “Speedway” part of this valley freeway nickname refers to the route’s fast-paced nature and the captivating landscapes it traverses.

It wasn’t so many years ago when seeing women in the auto repair industry was pretty much unheard of. But what has often been seen as a male-dominated field is now becoming more open to females as well.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at what’s causing the shift that’s allowing more females to feel comfortable in this important field. Then, we’ll look at the types of occupations that women in the auto repair industry can expect to have.

Why are the numbers of women in the automotive industry increasing?

An overall change in perception is perhaps the single most driving force behind more women now choosing to pursue an automotive-related occupation. As more women have entered the field, there’s been a gradual mindset shift surrounding their presence. And even more than that, they’ve proven to be valuable assets by bringing different ideas, perspectives, and problem-solving approaches to what was once a male-dominated industry. Let’s look at a few other factors that are driving significant change.

4 major factors contributing to an increase in the number of women in the auto repair industry

1. There is now increased representation, advocacy, and support for women in the auto repair industry.

Now that we’re past the pioneering stage of women entering the automotive industry, there are more women to advocate for and support other females choosing to pursue an automotive career. There are also organizations that specifically encourage women to enter the auto repair industry and provide resources and networking experiences that help them do just that.

2. Women have automotive skills and expertise comparable to their male colleagues.

Over time, women have consistently shown that they’re capable of becoming skilled and knowledgeable professionals in the automotive industry. Furthermore, they’re able to participate in hands-on training opportunities and receive formal education in the field, exactly the same as their male peers.

3. Female customers often prefer to work with female automotive professionals.

Some customers, especially women, prefer to work with a female mechanic, service advisor, or salesperson. This has led to an increased demand for female workers in the automotive industry. It has also created opportunities for them to excel in the field.

4. A focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in schools encourages more women to pursue STEM-related careers.

Today’s vehicles are more like computers on wheels. As such, they need technical-minded people to diagnose and fix problems and even develop new technology. As more women pursue STEM careers, their success encourages other females to follow in their footsteps and consider technical careers in the automotive industry.

What types of careers can women have in the auto repair industry?

The simplest answer to this question is this … Women can have any of the same automotive careers as men do!

This list includes, but is not limited to, the following careers:

Automotive technician (aka your trusted mechanic!)

Auto repair service advisor

Auto repair shop owner, business manager, or finance manager

Tow truck driver

Roadside assistance operator

Automotive designer

Mechanical engineer

Service manager

Auto parts specialist

Truthfully, there’s no limit to what women can do in the auto repair industry. And, they’re just getting started!

You’re driving along and out of nowhere you see smoke and steam coming from under the hood. When your engine overheats, it can be a scary and stressful situation, especially if you’re in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, even with routine maintenance services, overheating engines do still sometimes occur and can cause damage. This is especially true when the right precautions and the proper actions are not taken. There’s nothing like a hot engine to ruin your road trip – and your bank balance. Keep reading to learn why your engine may overheat and actions to take if you happen to be out for a drive when it happens.

What Does Your Cooling System Do?

Your cooling system keeps a certain standard temperature for the engine. It does so by circulating coolant (a.k.a. antifreeze) through your engine to your radiator, taking heat away from the engine while it works hard. Today’s engines are pretty tough, but when the temperatures go above normal, they can begin to fail. When failures start to happen, it could mean permanent damage to your engine, gaskets, hoses and even seals that are all part of the system that keeps your engine running.

Actions to Take If Your Engine Overheats

Maybe you notice the dashboard warning lights. Maybe it’s the strange smell coming from the engine. Or, maybe you see smoke coming from under the hood or your vehicle is not performing like usual. In any of these situations, follow these steps to stay safe and prevent major damage to your vehicle.

Pull over to a safe area and assess the situation calmly.

Turn off the vehicle. You won’t want to keep driving with an overheating engine as this could cause permanent damage.

Keep moving ONLY when necessary. Find a safe, clear place to come to a complete stop. If you can’t do this, keeping your car moving slowly may still allow a constant airflow around the motor to help with natural cooling. Leaving your car at rest or idling could actually worsen the problem and create more heat.

Turn on the heat. When the vehicle is still in motion, turning off the air conditioning and increasing the heat to high may help to pull additional heat away from the engine.

Open the windows. Your goal is to release as much heat as possible. Rolling down and opening as many windows as possible is another way to allow heat to flow out of the vehicle.

Call for help. You can call for roadside assistance from a local towing company, AAA, or another carrier.

Do not try to open the hood until the vehicle has cooled down plenty. To see if it has cooled down, monitor the temperature gauge in your vehicle as it moves from HOT to COOL. This may take upwards of 30 minutes. Remember not to start the engine – in this situation, only activate the ignition to the “on” position to read the temperature gauge.

Why Do Engines Overheat?

We get this question a lot at our Tempe auto repair shop. There are some common reasons which include but are not necessarily limited to:

Too little or no coolant, causing a cooling system failure.

Cooling system leaks

A broken water pump

Radiator problems or issues with their fans not removing heat

Oil level too low so engine temperatures increase

Thermostat failure

Belt and hose issues

A plugged heater core

Schedule an appointment to see one of our automotive technicians here at Good Works Auto Repair for routine services or inspections. Most importantly, if you are in this situation, remember to pull over in a safe place, turn off the vehicle and have your vehicle towed to us where we can work to get your vehicle performing once again.

Did you know that around 43% of children that die from car accidents do so because they weren’t properly restrained? Sometimes, the only good thing that comes from a very unfortunate situation is the possibility that the story will help prevent it from happening to someone else. That’s exactly why we’re sharing with you today the top reasons why proper child restraints in vehicles are so important.

In 2022, a child died in Virginia after being run over by the vehicle she was seated in – unrestrained. When the door was opened by another passenger, the young child fell out of the vehicle. According to the news reports, the police said the driver “immediately got out of the vehicle while the SUV’s transmission was still in drive, causing it to roll over the child.” This is an unfortunate situation that could have clearly been prevented from the start.

The Evidence is Clear: Proper Child Restraints Can Save Lives

The bottom line is that consistent and correct use of proper child restraints in vehicles reduces the risk of injury and death. This includes car seats, booster seats and so on!

According to the Journal of Pediatrics, almost 50% of children are put at risk from negligence just on this topic alone. It has been estimated that 95% of families install their newborn’s seat incorrectly and up to 75% face their baby’s car seat in the incorrect direction. Their report showed various factors that increase the chance of death of a child in a car accident based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The report looked at 18,116 children under the age of 15 that were involved in fatal car crashes from 2010 – 2014. Of those 18,116 children, around 16% of them died in a car crash. 43% of those children who died were improperly restrained or not retained at all.

Arizona Car Accident Trends Need to Change

Arizona also saw a 1% increase in fatal crashes in 2018 when compared to 2017. Furthermore, in 2018 alone, 3,134 children under the age of 14 had serious injuries in motor vehicle crashes. Of those, 34 ended in death and the crashes cost the state around $19 billion, nothing close to what those lives were worth saving.

We urge all parents to take the time to install car seats correctly and to use proper child restraints in vehicles – they CAN save lives!

Start by knowing the laws and regulations – what seat your child should be using now as well as when to change to a different seat. This is so important!

Have a local law enforcement officer or a certified car seat installer check to see if you are using the proper restraints and if they’re installed correctly.

Recycle old or expired car seats or those that have been in accidents.

We hope this reminder helps in some small (or big) way. At Good Works Auto Repair, our automotive experts are always here to answer any of your vehicle related questions and can help guide you in the right direction. Our goal is to help keep your vehicle safe and running properly so you can focus on these types of things for your family!

Hybrid maintenance services at your local auto repair shop could become more popular as the days and years go by. That’s because both hybrid and electric vehicle sales continue to increase, thanks in part to high gas prices and the call for increased fuel efficiency.

According to sales data compiled by Reuters, there were just over 800,000 new hybrid vehicles that hit the roads in the U.S. in 2021. And, that doesn’t count the ones Americans already owned. While hybrid and fully electric vehicles still hold a small part of the overall vehicle market, it’s important to understand what hybrid maintenance is needed if you own such a vehicle. Today, we’ll walk you through 5 of the top hybrid maintenance items you should never ignore if you want to keep your vehicle in great condition.

1. Hybrid maintenance includes regular oil changes.

Hybrid vehicles utilize electric power under certain driving speeds and conditions. However, they still have an internal combustion engine as well. Depending on the model and your typical driving conditions, your hybrid may require an oil change every 5,000 – 10,000 miles. Be sure to ask your trusted hybrid mechanic or refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended schedule.

2. Take good care of your hybrid vehicle’s battery.

Extreme temperatures are the enemy of any car battery and your hybrid’s battery is certainly not exempt from this rule. To get the high fuel efficiency you expect from a hybrid vehicle, you must keep its battery charged and well maintained. While hybrid batteries typically last longer than those used in gas-powered vehicles, they may still need to be replaced at around 150,000 miles.

3. Hybrid maintenance includes brake service.

Hybrids are well known for their use of regenerative braking. This describes how a hybrid vehicle turns forward momentum during coasting or braking into electricity that is then utilized for recharging the battery or stopping the car. With this type of specialized braking system, it’s not uncommon for hybrid brakes to last for more than 100,000 miles. That’s not to say they should be completely ignored before then, however. Be sure to have your brakes checked for safety during any routine maintenance service at your favorite auto repair shop.

4. Follow good tire maintenance and replacement habits.

Many hybrid vehicles on the road today are equipped with low rolling resistance tires. In fact, this is one of the keys to their ability to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Just like any other vehicle, though, fuel economy will be impacted if your tires aren’t kept at the proper pressure. Ask your mechanic or refer to the label posted inside the driver’s side door to learn what the optimal tire pressure should be. And, when new tires are needed, don’t forget to purchase low rolling resistance tires if that’s what your hybrid originally had. Otherwise, you will notice a significant change in gas mileage.

5. Pay attention to the manufacturer recommended hybrid maintenance schedule.

Anyone who’s spent much time around our Tempe auto repair shop knows this – we’re HUGE proponents of following a regular preventative maintenance schedule. In fact, doing just that is how we’ve been able to get so many miles out of our own personal vehicles. Although hybrid models may require service less frequently than their gas or diesel-powered counterparts, routine maintenance is still needed. From tire rotations and engine air filter replacements to oil changes, battery service, and more, refer to your owner’s manual for the optimal hybrid maintenance schedule.

Expert Hybrid Maintenance and Repairs in Tempe, AZ

At Good Works Auto Repair, we know that hybrid maintenance is necessary in order to keep your vehicle running smoothly. But we also know that hybrid service shouldn’t be completed by just any mechanic. That’s why we have expert technicians on staff with the right training, knowledge, and tools to accurately diagnose, service, and repair your vehicle.

Simply give us a call or schedule an appointment online today. We look forward to providing you with reliable, affordable, and convenient hybrid maintenance and service!

Our little slice of Arizona is considered a severe service area for a lot of automotive parts, not the least of which is your car’s battery. The constant heat and driving demands can test your battery to the limit. If you haven’t had to replace a car battery yet, you most likely will at some time in the future here in the Tempe/Phoenix area. When it comes to choosing the right battery for your car or truck you need to consider the Reserve Capacity (RC) and Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). Listen to ACDelco’s Kurt Pursche explain the difference between RC and CCA and give you advice on which one is the more important item to focus on when you are deciding on your next car or truck battery

A lot of us are “do it yourselfers” when it comes to some of our automotive maintenance chores. If this applies to you, it’s good to know you have to be careful with some of these chores so as not to do more harm than good. This especially applies to anything involving your electrical system. One wrong move could potentially damage some of your computer-based systems, and that’s a recipe for a lot of very expensive parts and labor auto repair bills! Watch Scotty Kilmer, a mechanic for the last 46 years, as he shows how you can work on your car’s electrical system WITHOUT shorting things out and causing further damage. A few simple precautions is all that’s needed, and this video shows them to you. NOTE: Working on your own vehicle’s electrical system is NOT something w … read more

Batteries are a huge part of modern life. How many battery chargers do you have around? We’ve got a box full of them. Of course, we’re here to talk about your car battery. When people come into our tempe auto repair shop and need a new battery, they’re really not that happy about having to spend the money. But the fact is, 70% of batteries don’t last four years, but there are some things you can do to extend the life of your battery. First, keep it clean. If you see it getting dirty or greasy, let us know and we can clean it off. A dirty battery runs hotter, and that shortens its life. If your battery terminals are corroded, let us take a look at that, too. We can clean them up, and if the corrosion has gotten into the battery cables, we can replace them. Also, running your batter … read more

Some states have already made driving while using a cell phone illegal, and it’s highly discouraged in every part of the U.S. But there are many more distractions in the car than just talking on the phone or texting. Fortunately, voice control software has reached the point where many different devices in the car can be controlled by voice commands.

A part of car ownership involves vehicle maintenance and the occasional shopping trip to replace obsolete auto parts. Whether the parts aim to maintain the function of the vehicle, or you’re looking to improve the appearances of your vehicle, shopping will present a whole new challenge if you can’t determine the difference between OEM and Aftermarket Parts. Many often wonder if it’s worth sticking to genuine vehicle parts or if there are some benefits other than cost to purchasing aftermarket parts from a different manufacturer.
