What Does Your Cooling System Do?

Your cooling system keeps a certain standard temperature for the engine. It does so by circulating coolant (a.k.a. antifreeze) through your engine to your radiator, taking heat away from the engine while it works hard. Today’s engines are pretty tough, but when the temperatures go above normal, they can begin to fail. When failures start to happen, it could mean permanent damage to your engine, gaskets, hoses and even seals that are all part of the system that keeps your engine running.

Actions to Take If Your Engine Overheats

Maybe you notice the dashboard warning lights. Maybe it’s the strange smell coming from the engine. Or, maybe you see smoke coming from under the hood or your vehicle is not performing like usual. In any of these situations, follow these steps to stay safe and prevent major damage to your vehicle.

1. Pull over to a safe area and assess the situation calmly.
2. Turn off the vehicle. You won’t want to keep driving with an overheating engine as this could cause permanent damage.
3. Keep moving ONLY when necessary. Find a safe, clear place to come to a complete stop. If you can’t do this, keeping your car moving slowly may still allow a constant airflow around the motor to help with natural cooling. Leaving your car at rest or idling could actually worsen the problem and create more heat.
4. Turn on the heat. When the vehicle is still in motion, turning off the air conditioning and increasing the heat to high may help to pull additional heat away from the engine.
5. Open the windows. Your goal is to release as much heat as possible. Rolling down and opening as many windows as possible is another way to allow heat to flow out of the vehicle.
6. Call for help. You can call for roadside assistance from a local towing company, AAA, or another carrier.
7. Do not try to open the hood until the vehicle has cooled down plenty. To see if it has cooled down, monitor the temperature gauge in your vehicle as it moves from HOT to COOL. This may take upwards of 30 minutes. Remember not to start the engine – in this situation, only activate the ignition to the “on” position to read the temperature gauge.

Why Do Engines Overheat?

We get this question a lot at our Tempe auto repair shop. There are some common reasons which include but are not necessarily limited to:

• Too little or no coolant, causing a cooling system failure.
• Cooling system leaks
• A broken water pump
• Radiator problems or issues with their fans not removing heat
• Oil level too low so engine temperatures increase
• Thermostat failure
• Belt and hose issues
• A plugged heater core

In 2022, a child died in Virginia after being run over by the vehicle she was seated in – unrestrained. When the door was opened by another passenger, the young child fell out of the vehicle. According to the news reports, the police said the driver “immediately got out of the vehicle while the SUV’s transmission was still in drive, causing it to roll over the child.” This is an unfortunate situation that could have clearly been prevented from the start.

The Evidence is Clear: Proper Child Restraints Can Save Lives

The bottom line is that consistent and correct use of proper child restraints in vehicles reduces the risk of injury and death. This includes car seats, booster seats and so on!

According to the Journal of Pediatrics, almost 50% of children are put at risk from negligence just on this topic alone. It has been estimated that 95% of families install their newborn’s seat incorrectly and up to 75% face their baby’s car seat in the incorrect direction. Their report showed various factors that increase the chance of death of a child in a car accident based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The report looked at 18,116 children under the age of 15 that were involved in fatal car crashes from 2010 – 2014. Of those 18,116 children, around 16% of them died in a car crash. 43% of those children who died were improperly restrained or not retained at all.

Arizona Car Accident Trends Need to Change

Arizona also saw a 1% increase in fatal crashes in 2018 when compared to 2017. Furthermore, in 2018 alone, 3,134 children under the age of 14 had serious injuries in motor vehicle crashes. Of those, 34 ended in death and the crashes cost the state around $19 billion, nothing close to what those lives were worth saving.

We urge all parents to take the time to install car seats correctly and to use proper child restraints in vehicles – they CAN save lives!

• Start by knowing the laws and regulations – what seat your child should be using now as well as when to change to a different seat. This is so important!
• Have a local law enforcement officer or a certified car seat installer check to see if you are using the proper restraints and if they’re installed correctly.
• Recycle old or expired car seats or those that have been in accidents.

While hybrid and fully electric vehicles still hold a small part of the overall vehicle market, it’s important to understand what hybrid maintenance is needed if you own such a vehicle. Today, we’ll walk you through 5 of the top hybrid maintenance items you should never ignore if you want to keep your vehicle in great condition.

1. Hybrid maintenance includes regular oil changes.

Hybrid vehicles utilize electric power under certain driving speeds and conditions. However, they still have an internal combustion engine as well. Depending on the model and your typical driving conditions, your hybrid may require an oil change every 5,000 – 10,000 miles. Be sure to ask your trusted hybrid mechanic or refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended schedule.

2. Take good care of your hybrid vehicle’s battery.

Extreme temperatures are the enemy of any car battery and your hybrid’s battery is certainly not exempt from this rule. To get the high fuel efficiency you expect from a hybrid vehicle, you must keep its battery charged and well maintained. While hybrid batteries typically last longer than those used in gas-powered vehicles, they may still need to be replaced at around 150,000 miles.

3. Hybrid maintenance includes brake service.

Hybrids are well known for their use of regenerative braking. This describes how a hybrid vehicle turns forward momentum during coasting or braking into electricity that is then utilized for recharging the battery or stopping the car. With this type of specialized braking system, it’s not uncommon for hybrid brakes to last for more than 100,000 miles. That’s not to say they should be completely ignored before then, however. Be sure to have your brakes checked for safety during any routine maintenance service at your favorite auto repair shop.

4. Follow good tire maintenance and replacement habits.

Many hybrid vehicles on the road today are equipped with low rolling resistance tires. In fact, this is one of the keys to their ability to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Just like any other vehicle, though, fuel economy will be impacted if your tires aren’t kept at the proper pressure. Ask your mechanic or refer to the label posted inside the driver’s side door to learn what the optimal tire pressure should be. And, when new tires are needed, don’t forget to purchase low rolling resistance tires if that’s what your hybrid originally had. Otherwise, you will notice a significant change in gas mileage.

5. Pay attention to the manufacturer recommended hybrid maintenance schedule.
