How does the OBD system work?

The OBD system works by continuously receiving and analyzing data from various sensors located throughout the vehicle. These sensors measure everything from engine temperature to oxygen levels in the exhaust gases.

Are the OBD codes always accurate?

When a vehicle’s computer reports a problem, it is common for drivers to assume that the computer has identified the faulty component and that replacing it will fix the issue. However, this is not always the case.

Often, there is a reason for the code that is not the result of a component failure. For example, if a vehicle has a bad thermostat, it may trigger a code for a coolant sensor out of range. Understanding Transmission Fluid

Depending on the type of transmission in your vehicle, you may have either automatic or manual transmission fluid. Transmission fluid is a synthetic fluid that is designed to lubricate the gears and components of your transmission, provide hydraulic pressure and friction to the automatic transmission, and control the temperature of this hard-working component of your vehicle. 

Why is Transmission Fluid Low?

• Sounds: Every engine has normal sounds during operation.  But most drivers are familiar with the ones they should be hearing and are usually in tune with those that are new or unusual.  If you start to hear knocking sounds, that may be from an improper air/fuel mixture or fuel injector issue.  Thumping or banging may be from a loose belt.  Pay careful attention to when you hear the sounds, what type of sound it is, and where it is generally coming from in the engine.
• Oil Consumption: While there is some normal oil burn off in your engine, any excessive consumption of oil is an indication of a problem.  If your oil levels are continuously low, check underneath the vehicle for a possible leak.  The main culprit of oil leaks is faulty or worn seals and gaskets.  Another possible cause is that the oil has leaked into the combustion chamber and is being burned off by the engine. An oil and filter change are one of the most important maintenance routines you can follow to keep your vehicle in good health and performance.  Oil serves many purposes for the vehicle, including lubrication of parts, engine cleaning, and helping to regulate temperature.

Many more vehicle owners are opting to use synthetic oils because they last longer and do not require the frequency of changes as conventional oil products.  Our rule of thumb based on experience is for motor oil to be changed every 3,000 miles and never exceed 5,000.  For the synthetic oils it’s every 6,000 miles, never exceed 10,000.  If you exceed those timeframes the oil breaks down and burning and sludging occur.  While long intervals early in the car’s life has minimal impact, long term it has detrimental effects.

The Drivetrain

Before we consider the driveshaft, it is important to understand the purpose of the vehicle drivetrain.  This term applies to the vehicle components that are responsible for collectively transferring power from the engine to drive the vehicle.

The drivetrain consists of the transmission, axles, wheels, differential, and of course, the driveshaft.  The drivetrain is different from the powertrain, which is a term used to describe the overall components of the vehicle that create kinetic energy that is used by the drivetrain, mainly the vehicle engine.

The first task is to check that you have a spare tire, and you can easily access it in your vehicle.  Make sure you know what type of spare tire you have in the vehicle.  The common types include:

• A full-sized tire that either matches or does not match your other tires
• A full-size temporary spare tire
• A compact temporary spare tire (also referred to as a donut tire)

Grinding

There are a variety of places where grinding sound can be coming from in the engine.  For example, the transmission is notorious for grinding sounds or it could be from worn bearings or the CV joint.  Grinding is usually the result of engine parts rubbing up against each other – sometimes due to insufficient lubrication.  If you are not able to pinpoint where the sound is coming from then have it inspected by a service professional.  Try to make note of when you hear the grinding sound (such as when you are shifting gears) or if it is constant while driving.

Squealing

Transmission Fluid Purpose and Importance

There are many critical fluids that support your vehicle systems., including the transmission.  Transmission fluid is a specifically formulated product that lubricates transmission parts, helps to keep temperatures controlled, and acts as a hydraulic fluid to power some transmission components.

While transmission fluid does not need frequent replacement like motor oil, it will degrade over time and be exposed to various contaminants.  It is advisable to keep an eye on your fluid levels, especially if you do a lot of heavy driving or if you drive a manual transmission.  Replacement times vary based on many factors including your vehicle make, transmission type, and your driving habits.  Consult with your owner’s manual for the recommended timeframe to replace transmission fluid.

Here are some starters on different transmission fluid considerations for your vehicle:

• Conventional or Synthetic – in most newer vehicles, you have the option to use conventional fluid, which is petroleum based, or synthetic. Conventional fluids work fine but synthetics have been engineered to handle higher temperatures and outperform the conventional fluids.  The downside of the synthetics is the cost.
• Dexron and Mercon – Dexron and Mercon are two popular brands that are made by General Motors and Ford. These automatic transmission fluids (ATFs) are compatible with a range of vehicle makes and models and, in some cases, on some foreign vehicles as well.
• HFM Style Fluid – this fluid comes in a variety of brand names and shares many similarities to Dexron and Mercon. However, the HFM (high friction modified) fluids have a different viscosity level designed for some vehicle transmissions.

What is the Driveshaft?

The driveshaft has a very specific role in the drivetrain – to transfer the torque (i.e.. rotational force) from the transmission to the differential.  From there, the differential provides the torque to the necessary wheels to produce movement.   

The driveshaft goes under various names, depending on the type of drive system within your vehicle (such as front or rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive).  The driveshaft may sometimes be called the propeller shaft, Cardan shaft, or simply the prop shaft. 

The driveshaft is a long, cylindrical steel shaft, that may be solid or hollow and the position of the driveshaft under the vehicle may vary depending on the type of drive system.   

Driveshaft Problems

Your vehicle’s driveshaft spins at high speeds to transfer the power to your wheels, and so it must be balanced and weighted accordingly.  If something affects the driveshaft, it will impact the ability to drive your vehicle. 

Some of the more common causes of driveshaft problems include: 

• Hazardous road surfaces such as potholes, which can damage the driveshaft. 
• Worn bearings can disrupt the driveshaft’s ability to spin and provide power to the remainder of the drivetrain.  Bearings are metal balls that help reduce friction within spinning components. 
• Excessive vehicle weight or overloading of the vehicle – such as pulling heavy loads. 
• Wear, tear, or corrosion of the universal joints.  The universal joints are the connectors between the transmission and the driveshaft. 

Symptoms of a Bad Driveshaft

Since the operation of the driveshaft is critical to the drivability of your vehicle, there are some symptoms that you may experience that may be associated with a bad driveshaft. 

1. Vibration:  Vibration can be a sign of many different vehicle problems.  But with a driveshaft, excessive vibration is a sign that there is damage to your driveshaft. Usually, the vibration is the result of worn or damaged universal joints.  Avoiding this symptom can result in further damage to your overall drivetrain, so it must be addressed promptly.  
2. Turning Issues:  If you are having difficulty turning your vehicle, or unable to do it at all, this is a possible symptom of a broken driveshaft.  Again, this issue must be remedied quickly because it represents a safety concern. 
3. Unusual Noises:  Unusual noises are also another common symptom of many different vehicle problems.  However, if connected with the other listed symptoms, this may indicate a driveshaft problem.  Universal joints that are worn, or not properly lubricated, can result in unusual sounds coming from the underside of the vehicle such as rattling, clanking, scraping, or knocking.   
4. Erratic Acceleration:  If the vehicle is erratic or shudders when moving from low speed to high, this could be a symptom of a bad drivetrain.  The issue may stem from worn or damaged universal joints.
