This time of year, many vehicle owners notice subtle power loss or sluggishness and dismiss it as “just winter sluggishness.” However, these signs—rough idling, hesitant acceleration, or a drop in fuel economy—are often the quiet warnings of Intake Manifold Carbon Build-Up. In this month’s blog, we examine how carbon deposits can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s intake manifold and ways to keep your vehicle running smoothly through the winter months.

What is the Intake Manifold?

The intake manifold is the “lungs” of your vehicle. Its function is to collect the clean air entering your system and evenly distribute it to each cylinder, ensuring the correct air-fuel mixture for combustion. When functioning properly, it guarantees optimal power, efficiency, and a smooth idle.

Why December Driving is a Carbon Trap

Short winter trips are the perfect recipe for carbon trouble. When you use your vehicle for quick errands, the engine rarely reaches its full operating temperature. This incomplete warm-up means that combustion byproducts (oil vapors) do not fully vaporize and instead settle inside the manifold, hardening into thick, sooty deposits.

This issue is amplified in modern vehicles that use Direct-Injection (DI) technology. In traditional engines, fuel was sprayed into the manifold, acting as a detergent to wash the intake valves clean. In DI engines, the fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder, completely bypassing the intake valves. Without that constant fuel wash, carbon deposits from crankcase ventilation are left to build up freely, gradually choking the engine air flow.

Maintenance is Your Best Defense

The best way to maintain your vehicle is through prevention:

Highway Runs: Once a week, take your vehicle on a 20–30-minute highway drive to ensure the engine reaches full operating temperature, which helps burn off light deposits.

Quality Fuel: Use Top Tier gasoline brands, as they contain detergent packages that aid in keeping injectors clean.

Scheduled Cleaning: For Direct-Injection vehicles, consider a professional intake cleaning service, such as walnut blasting, every 30,000 to 45,000 miles to manually remove the accumulated carbon.

Do not let carbon build-up steal the power of your vehicle—look for the signs and maintain your intake manifold now for smooth operation all winter long. If you would like to have your fuel system inspected, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

Your vehicle’s suspension system does far more than soften the ride—it is a critical safety feature that directly influences handling, braking performance, and overall road stability. Whether navigating congested city streets or winding rural roads, a well-maintained suspension system ensures that the vehicle remains firmly planted and responsive. This month’s blog post explores the suspension system in depth: its purpose, essential components, common issues and warning signs, and key maintenance practices.

What Is the Suspension System?

The suspension system is a complex assembly of mechanical components that connects the vehicle’s frame to its wheels. Its primary functions are to absorb road irregularities, maintain consistent tire contact, and support precise steering control. The core components include:

Springs: Coil springs or leaf springs support the vehicle’s weight and absorb vertical motion caused by uneven terrain.

Shock absorbers and struts: These hydraulic devices dampen the movement of the springs, reducing bounce, sway, and vibration.

Control arms and bushings: These pivoting links connect the wheels to the frame, allowing controlled vertical movement while isolating road noise and vibration.

Ball joints and tie rods: These components enable wheel articulation and maintain proper alignment during steering and suspension travel.

Together, these elements work in unison to deliver a stable, comfortable ride while ensuring that the tires remain in contact with the road surface for optimal traction and control.

Common Suspension Issues and Warning Signs

Suspension components deteriorate over time due to mileage, harsh driving conditions, and exposure to moisture, salt, and debris. The following symptoms may indicate that the suspension system requires attention:

Persistent bouncing or swaying after encountering a bump or dip

Uneven tire wear, often caused by misalignment or shock absorber failure

Nose-diving during braking or excessive body roll while cornering

Clunking, creaking, or knocking sounds from beneath the vehicle

Loose or vague steering response, especially at higher speeds

Ignoring these signs can compromise handling, increase stopping distances, and accelerate wear on tires and suspension components, all of which pose serious safety risks.

Suspension Maintenance Tips

Proactive maintenance can extend the life of the suspension system and preserve driving performance. Consider the following practices:

Schedule regular inspections: Include suspension checks during routine service appointments, particularly if driving frequently on rough terrain or carrying heavy loads.

Replace worn shocks and struts: These components typically last between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, although early wear may occur under demanding conditions.

Monitor alignment and tire balance: Poor alignment places stress on suspension parts and can lead to erratic handling and premature tire wear.

Remain alert to changes: A shift in ride comfort, steering responsiveness, or the emergence of unusual noises should prompt further investigation.

Choose high-quality replacement parts: When replacing components, select original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or reputable aftermarket brands to ensure durability and proper fit.

The suspension system is the unsung hero behind every safe and controlled drive. Maintaining it in optimal condition not only enhances comfort but also protects tires, sharpens steering response, and ensures that the vehicle reacts precisely when it matters most. For suspension service, contact the professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

After a long summer of road trips, high temperatures, and uneven pavement, your vehicle may be showing signs of misalignment. Wheel alignment is one of the most overlooked aspects of routine maintenance, yet it plays a critical role in vehicle safety, performance, and tire longevity. In this month’s blog post, we examine the importance of wheel alignment.

What is wheel misalignment?

As fall approaches and driving routines shift, now is the ideal time to ensure your wheels are properly aligned. Misalignment occurs when the angles of your vehicle’s wheels deviate from manufacturer specifications.

These angles—camber, caster, and toe—determine how the tires contact the road. Even slight deviations can lead to uneven tire wear, poor handling, and reduced fuel efficiency.

Drivers may notice symptoms such as

the vehicle pulling to one side,

steering wheel vibration,

or a crooked steering wheel when driving straight.

What causes wheel misalignment?

Several factors contribute to misalignment, especially during summer months. Potholes, curbs, and rough terrain can jolt suspension components out of alignment. High temperatures also accelerate wear on bushings and ball joints, which can affect wheel positioning. If your vehicle has been loaded heavily for travel or towing, the added strain may have shifted alignment angles as well.

What’s involved in a wheel alignment service?

A professional wheel alignment begins with a thorough inspection. Technicians use precision equipment to measure the current alignment angles of each wheel. These measurements are compared to the manufacturer’s recommended specifications. If discrepancies are found, adjustments are made using specialized tools to bring each wheel back into proper alignment. The process may involve repositioning suspension components, tightening bolts, and recalibrating sensors in modern vehicles.

Proper alignment ensures that all four wheels are working together efficiently.

Key benefits of wheel alignment include:

Reduced rolling resistance,

improved steering response,

and extended life of your tires.

It also enhances safety by maintaining consistent contact between the tires and the road surface, especially during braking and cornering.

At Shade Tree Garage, we recommend checking alignment at least once a year, or any time you notice unusual handling or tire wear. After a season of intense summer driving, a professional alignment can restore your vehicle’s performance and prevent costly repairs down the road. Schedule your alignment service today and drive into fall with confidence and control.

When it comes to seasonal vehicle troubles, winter often gets all the blame. Ice, snow, and freezing temperatures make for some miserable driving conditions. But the truth is, summer can be just as brutal—if not worse—on your vehicle. Sweltering temperatures, relentless sun, and long road trips can wreak havoc on critical components like tires, fluids, batteries, and air conditioning systems. As we approach the summer season this month, we look at why your vehicle might struggle more in summer than in winter.

Tire Trouble: Heat = Pressure Fluctuations

Hot pavement and soaring temperatures can make your tires’ air pressure fluctuate. When the weather heats up, the air inside your tires expands, which can lead to overinflation and uneven wear. Combine this with driving on scorching asphalt, and there is a higher risk of blowouts—especially if your tires are already worn down. Checking your tire pressure regularly during summer is a must to avoid unnecessary wear and sudden failures.

Fluids: Evaporation & Breakdown

Just like your body needs more hydration in summer, your vehicle’s fluids are also under stress. Brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, and transmission fluid are all sensitive to extreme heat. High temperatures can cause fluids to evaporate or degrade faster, which can lead to overheating, poor lubrication, and even engine damage. Make sure all fluid levels are topped off and changed at recommended intervals, especially before long summer road trips.

Battery Struggles: Heat Speeds Up Wear

Most people associate dead batteries with winter, but hot weather can be even more damaging. Heat accelerates chemical reactions inside the battery, which can cause it to lose charge faster and even shorten its lifespan. Intense temperatures also increase corrosion on battery terminals, leading to poor connectivity. If your battery is over three years old, have it tested before summer kicks in to avoid unexpected failures.

Air Conditioning: Harder Work & Higher Risk of Failure

Your vehicle’s air conditioning system works harder in the summer, and all that extra strain can expose existing weaknesses. Leaks, worn-out components, or low refrigerant levels may not be noticeable until the AC is pushed to its limit. If your AC is not cooling as well as it used to, it could be a sign that you need a recharge or repairs before the real heat wave arrives.

While winter brings ice and snow-related challenges, summer has its own set of vehicle stressors. To keep your vehicle running smoothly in hot weather, pay attention to your tire pressure, fluid levels, battery health, and air conditioning system. A little preventative maintenance can go a long way in surviving the summer heat—without turning your road trips into a series of breakdowns. Want to have your vehicle checked before temperatures soar? Contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

The fuel filter plays a vital role in keeping your vehicle running smoothly by ensuring the fuel entering the engine is clean and free of contaminants like dirt, rust, and debris. In this month’s blog post, we examine the function of the fuel filter, common problems that you may experience with your fuel filter and vehicle, and ways to keep it well-maintained.

Fuel Filter Function

Your vehicle’s fuel filter acts as a barrier, protecting sensitive engine components and promoting efficient combustion. Without a properly functioning fuel filter, impurities in the fuel can lead to costly engine damage and decreased performance.

Common Fuel Filter Problems

Common problems with fuel filters often stem from neglecting regular maintenance. A clogged or dirty fuel filter can restrict fuel flow to the engine, causing various issues.

Symptoms of a failing fuel filter include difficulty starting the vehicle, sluggish acceleration, engine misfires, and poor fuel efficiency. These warning signs should not be ignored, as they can lead to more significant problems if left unaddressed.

Fuel Filter Maintenance

Fuel filter maintenance is straightforward but crucial. First, check your owner’s manual for the recommended replacement schedule, as intervals vary between vehicles. For most vehicles, replacing the fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles is ideal. If you frequently drive in dusty or harsh conditions, you might need to replace it more often. Consult a service professional to ensure proper installation, as improper handling can damage the fuel system.

Increase Your Vehicle’s Fuel Efficiency

In addition to regular filter replacements, there are proactive steps you can take to improve overall fuel efficiency.

Start by ensuring you are using high-quality fuel from reputable sources to minimize the risk of contamination.

Periodically inspect your fuel lines for leaks or damage, as these can contribute to inefficiencies.

Keep your tires properly inflated, as under-inflated tires can increase resistance and fuel consumption.

Routine engine maintenance, including spark plug replacements and air filter cleaning, can further enhance your vehicle’s performance.

Driving habits also play a significant role in fuel efficiency. Avoid rapid acceleration and excessive idling, as these behaviors can waste fuel. Instead, practice smooth and consistent driving to maximize mileage.

Maintaining your fuel filter is a simple yet impactful step toward preserving your vehicle’s health. By combining regular maintenance with mindful driving and engine care, you will not only extend the life of your vehicle but also enjoy improved fuel efficiency and savings over time.

Winter can be tough on tires. Cold temperatures, icy roads, and salt-covered surfaces take their toll, leaving your tires potentially vulnerable to damage. As spring emerges, it’s time to give your tires some much-needed attention. Proper post-winter tire care not only enhances vehicle safety but also extends the lifespan of your tires. In this month’s blog post, we provide guidance for vehicle owners to keep those tires in top condition.

Inspect for Cracks and Damage: The harsh winter elements can cause rubber to degrade. Carefully examine your tires for visible cracks or cuts along the sidewalls and tread. Cracks are often a sign of dry rot, which compromises the tire’s integrity and poses a safety risk. If you find significant damage, it’s best to replace the affected tires immediately.

Check for Uneven Wear: Uneven wear patterns on your tires can indicate underlying issues with alignment, balance, or suspension. Take a close look at the tread wear. For instance:

Excessive wear on the inner or outer edges suggests misalignment.

A “cupping” or scalloped pattern might indicate suspension problems.

Bulges or bubbles on the tire surface could signal internal damage. Address these issues promptly by visiting a trusted repair shop.

Monitor Tread Depth: Adequate tread depth ensures good traction. Use the penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing downward. If you can see all of his head, it’s time to replace your tires.

Rotate Your Tires: Regular tire rotations help distribute wear evenly, promoting a longer lifespan. After winter, it’s an excellent time to schedule a rotation. Most manufacturers recommend doing this every 5,000-7,000 miles.

Maintain Proper Inflation: Cold weather often causes tire pressure to drop. Check and adjust tire pressure according to your vehicle’s specifications, usually found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s door. Proper inflation improves fuel efficiency and prevents uneven wear.

Clean and Protect: Road salt and grime can accelerate tire wear and corrode rims. Wash your tires thoroughly to remove any buildup and consider applying a tire protectant to shield against UV rays and cracking.

By dedicating some time to post-winter tire care, you will improve vehicle safety and maximize tire longevity. If you would like your tires to be inspected or any necessary repairs performed, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, tire rotations often do not receive the attention they deserve. However, regularly rotating your tires is one of the simplest and most effective ways to ensure your vehicle’s longevity and maintain a smooth ride. In this month’s blog post, we explore the importance of tire rotations and how they contribute to the health of your vehicle.

Even Tire Wear

Tires wear down unevenly due to the varying weight distribution and driving dynamics of your vehicle.

Front tires, for example, tend to wear out faster because they bear the brunt of steering and braking forces.

By rotating your tires regularly, you promote even wear across all four tires, which extends their overall lifespan.

This not only saves you money on tire replacements but also ensures consistent performance and safety.

Improved Handling and Performance

Uneven tire wear can lead to imbalanced handling and reduced traction, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Regular tire rotations help maintain optimal tread depth and tire performance, providing better grip and handling.

This translates to a smoother and safer driving experience, whether you are navigating city streets or tackling winding country roads.

Enhanced Fuel Efficiency

Properly maintained tires can improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

When tires wear unevenly, they create additional rolling resistance, which forces your engine to work harder and consume more fuel.

By keeping your tires evenly worn through regular rotations, you can boost your vehicle’s fuel economy and save money at the pump.

Preventative Maintenance

Tire rotations provide an opportunity to inspect your tires for signs of damage, such as cuts, punctures, or bulges.

Detecting and addressing these issues early can prevent more serious problems down the road, such as blowouts or flat tires.

Additionally, regular rotations allow for the inspection of other critical components, such as brakes and suspension systems.

Manufacturer Recommendations

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend rotating your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, or as specified in your owner’s manual. Adhering to these guidelines can help preserve your vehicle’s warranty and ensure it performs at its best.

Routine tire rotations are a vital aspect of vehicle maintenance that can extend the life of your tires, improve handling, enhance fuel efficiency, and contribute to your vehicle’s overall longevity. Make tire rotations a regular part of your maintenance routine to keep your vehicle running smoothly for years to come.

If you are a Jeep owner, you might have heard of the dreaded “death wobble.” This phenomenon can be both alarming and dangerous, especially when it occurs at highway speeds. In this month’s blog post, we examine the Jeep death wobble, and how it can be repaired to keep your vehicle safe.

What is the Death Wobble?

The death wobble refers to a sudden, violent shaking of the steering wheel and front end of the vehicle. It typically happens at speeds above 55 mph and can be triggered by driving on an uneven road surface or hitting a pothole or bump. The shaking can be so severe that it feels like the entire vehicle is about to fall apart. If this happens to you while driving, you should not let go of the wheel, immediately slow down and safely pull off to the side of the road. You should contact a roadside service or tow for the Jeep and not drive the vehicle until it is examined by a service professional.

Causes of the Death Wobble

Several factors can contribute to the death wobble, including:

Loose or Worn Suspension Components: Components like ball joints, tie rod ends, and control arm bushings can wear out over time, leading to instability.

Misaligned Wheels: Improper wheel alignment can cause vibrations and imbalance in the suspension system.

Uneven Tire Pressure: Imbalanced tires can create vibrations that trigger the death wobble.

Faulty Wheel Bearings: Worn-out wheel bearings can also cause the front end to shake.

Brake Hoses: In rare instances, failing brake hoses can cause the brakes to overheat, wear prematurely, or even fail, contributing to the wobble.

Why is it Unsafe?

The death wobble is not just an inconvenience; it’s a serious safety hazard. When the steering wheel shakes uncontrollably, it makes it difficult to maintain control of the vehicle, which could result in a serious accident. This can be particularly dangerous on highways or in heavy traffic.

How to Fix the Death Wobble

Fixing the death wobble involves addressing the underlying issues with the suspension and steering systems. Here are some steps to take:

Inspect Suspension Components: Check for worn or loose parts like ball joints, tie rod ends, and control arm bushings. If there are any damaged or failed components, they should be replaced.

Align the Balance the Wheels: Ensure that the wheels are properly aligned and balanced to prevent vibrations.

Check Wheel Bearings: Inspect the wheel bearings and have them replaced if they are worn out.

Replace Brake Hoses: If brake hoses are failing, replace them to prevent overheating and premature wear.

Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent the death wobble from occurring. If you experience this issue, it’s important to address it promptly to ensure your safety and the longevity of your vehicle. If you own a Jeep and are concerned about this phenomenon, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

As winter approaches, it’s essential to prepare your vehicle for the colder months ahead. One often-overlooked area of maintenance is the vehicle’s belts and hoses. Cooler temperatures can take a toll on these critical components, leading to potential cracks and leaks if not regularly checked and maintained. In this month’s blog, we discuss why November is the perfect time to ensure your belts and hoses are in top shape.

Impact of Cooler Temperatures

Your vehicle’s belts and hoses are critical components that power various engine functions or carry vital fluids to engine parts. Cold weather can cause belts and hoses to become brittle and less flexible. The rubber material they are made from is more susceptible to cracking and breaking when temperatures drop. If left unchecked, these cracks can lead to leaks and ultimately, complete failure of the component. This not only affects your vehicle’s performance but can also result in costly repairs.

Signs of Problems

Visible Cracks or Fraying: Inspect your belts for any visible cracks, fraying, or glazing (a shiny appearance). Hoses should be checked for cracks, bulges, or soft spots.

Squealing Noises: A high-pitched squealing noise when you start your car or accelerate can indicate a worn or loose belt.

Leaks: Puddles or drips of fluid under your vehicle might signal a leaking hose.

Dashboard Warning Lights: Illuminated warning lights on your dashboard, such as the check engine light, can indicate a problem with your vehicle’s belts or hoses.

Proper Maintenance Tips

Regular Inspections: Make it a habit to inspect your belts and hoses regularly, especially as temperatures begin to drop.

Replace as Needed: If you notice any signs of wear or damage, replace the affected belts or hoses immediately. Don’t wait for a complete failure.

Proper Tension: Ensure that belts have the proper tension. Belts that are too loose can slip and cause squealing, while overly tight belts can put strain on other components.

Use Quality Parts: When replacing belts and hoses, use high-quality parts designed to withstand cold temperatures and harsh conditions.

By checking your vehicle’s belts and hoses in November, you can prevent unexpected breakdowns and expensive repairs during the winter months. Regular maintenance ensures that your vehicle runs smoothly and efficiently, even in the coldest weather. If you would like to have a belts and hoses inspection, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, it’s easy to forget about how the colder weather can affect various vehicle components, such as the engine mounts. These unsung heroes play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth ride, particularly in the colder months. Worn engine mounts can lead to serious issues, and this is especially true in fall and winter when the elements put extra strain on your vehicle. In this month’s blog post, we examine your vehicle’s engine mounts, what type of problems you can experience, and key maintenance tips.

What are Engine Mounts?

Engine mounts secure your engine to the vehicle’s frame, absorbing shocks and vibrations, and keeping the engine aligned with the drivetrain. When these mounts wear out, the engine can shift, leading to noise, vibration, and even damage to other components. In colder weather, worn mounts become stiffer, which can exacerbate these problems.

Engine mounts are often overlooked because they do not usually give obvious signs of wear until they are significantly degraded. Unlike oil changes or tire rotations, there is not a set interval for checking them, and symptoms like unusual vibrations can be mistaken for other issues.

Cold Weather and Your Engine Mounts

Colder weather can have a significant impact on vehicle engine mounts, including:

Material Stiffening: Engine mounts are often made of rubber or a rubber-metal composite. In colder temperatures, rubber can become stiffer and less flexible, which can reduce its ability to absorb vibrations and shocks effectively.

Increased Wear and Tear: The cold can exacerbate existing wear and tear on engine mounts. As the rubber hardens, it may crack or deteriorate faster, leading to a compromised mount.

Condensation and Moisture: Cold weather can lead to condensation and moisture buildup, which can affect the integrity of the rubber in the mounts, causing them to degrade more quickly.

Identifying Problems with Engine Mounts

So, how can you tell if your engine mounts need attention?

Increased Vibrations: If you feel unusual vibrations, especially when the engine is idling, it could be a sign of worn engine mounts.

Unusual Noises: Listen for clunking or banging sounds, particularly when starting the vehicle or during acceleration.

Engine Movement: Pop the hood and visually inspect if the engine moves excessively when revving it. There should be minimal movement if the mounts are in good shape.

Maintaining Your Engine Mounts

Regular maintenance can prolong the life of your engine mounts and keep them functioning effectively:

Routine Inspections: Include engine mounts in your regular vehicle check-ups. Look for cracks, wear, or looseness in the mounts.

Keep Your Engine in Tune: A well-maintained engine runs smoothly, putting less strain on the mounts.

Mind Your Driving Habits: Aggressive driving can cause additional wear. Try to drive smoothly and avoid harsh acceleration or sudden stops.

Regular checks and maintenance of your engine mounts can save you from the headaches of engine damage and costly repairs. As the temperatures drop, taking the time to ensure your engine mounts are in good condition will help keep your vehicle running smoothly throughout the colder months. If you would like your engine mounts inspected, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

With rising fuel prices and growing environmental concerns, more important than ever is finding ways to improve fuel efficiency. In this month’s blog post, we review ten ways you can get the most out of every gallon of gas in your vehicle.

Maintain Your Vehicle Regularly

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal fuel efficiency. Ensure your engine is properly tuned and replace air filters as needed. A well-maintained engine runs more efficiently, burning less fuel. Check with your owner’s manual on the proper grade of motor oil as well to ensure improved gas mileage.

Check Tire Pressure

Under-inflated tires can increase rolling resistance, making your engine work harder and consume more fuel. Check your tire pressure monthly and keep it at the manufacturer’s recommended level.

Drive Smoothly

Drive smoothly, anticipate traffic conditions, and avoid sudden stops and starts to save fuel. Avoid aggressive driving such as rapid acceleration after stops, or hard braking in traffic.

Reduce Weight and Drag

Extra weight in your vehicle requires more energy to move. Remove unnecessary items from your trunk and back seat. Additionally, roof racks and carriers can create aerodynamic drag, reducing fuel efficiency.

Use Cruise Control

Using cruise control on highways helps maintain a constant speed, which can improve fuel efficiency.

Avoid Excessive Idling

Idling consumes fuel without moving your vehicle. If you expect to be stopped for more than a minute, turn off your engine.

Plan Your Trips

Combine errands into one trip to avoid unnecessary driving. Short trips from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multi-stop trip covering the same distance.

Monitor Your Speed

Fuel efficiency decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph. Stick to the speed limit and use overdrive gears to reduce engine speed and save fuel.

Use Air Conditioning Wisely

Air conditioning can reduce fuel efficiency, especially at lower speeds. Use it sparingly and consider using the vehicle’s ventilation system instead. At higher speeds, using the AC is more efficient than driving with the windows down, which can create drag.

Choose the Right Fuel

Using the correct octane level recommended for your vehicle can prevent engine knocking and improve performance. Higher octane fuel is not necessarily better unless your vehicle specifically requires it.

By following these tips, you can improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, save money on gas, and reduce your environmental impact. If you would like to have your vehicle inspected for any concerns that may be hindering your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

If you are driving a newer automatic transmission vehicle, it is likely that it is equipped with a continuous variable transmission (CVT). More automatics made within the last fifteen years have adapted to CVT to improve overall driving performance. Unlike traditional automatic transmissions that use a set number of gears, a CVT adjusts the gear ratio in a fluid, uninterrupted manner. This modern enhancement in vehicle design provides a more efficient and smoother transmission. In this month’s blog post, we examine the workings of a CVT, discuss some common issues it might face, and provide tips on how to maintain it.

Understanding the CVT

A CVT operates similarly to an automatic transmission, eliminating the need for the driver to manually shift gears. Where the CVT differs from the automatic, is that is does not use gears. The CVT employs two pulleys linked by a robust belt or chain that can alter its diameters based on the vehicle’s power requirements, providing the necessary transmission support. By adjusting the pulley diameters, the CVT can align the gear ratio with the engine and vehicle speed, allowing the engine to function at its most efficient RPM (revolutions per minute) in any driving scenario. This results in smoother acceleration and deceleration without abrupt shifts or jolts.

Potential Issues with CVTs

Despite its benefits, a CVT can have its share of problems. Some common CVT issues include:

Lag: There might be a delay or lag when the driver steps on the accelerator pedal, as the CVT needs time to adjust the gear ratio. While not a mechanical problem, it can impact the driving experience and vehicle performance.

Noise: During acceleration, a CVT might generate a loud droning or whining noise as the engine maintains a high RPM.

Overheating: Excessive friction, high temperatures, or insufficient fluid levels can cause a CVT to overheat. This can damage the belt, leading to slippage, breakage, or wear.

Durability: A CVT might not have the same lifespan as a traditional automatic transmission, as the belt or chain can wear out faster due to the friction and tension of the components.

Maintaining Your CVT

There are regular maintenance tasks that you can include in your vehicle plan to help extend the functioning and longevity of the CVT.

Monitor and change CVT fluid, if necessary: Periodically, it is helpful to monitor the condition of your vehicle’s CVT fluid. You also want to maintain the level based on your vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines. Good CVT fluid is clear – if it appears dark or dirty then it is time to change the fluid. Changing fluid depends a lot on your specific driving habits and driving conditions, but usually it is advisable to change fluid every thirty to sixty thousand miles driven. Consult with your vehicle owner’s manual.

Focus on careful driving habits: If you tend to drive hard, or suddenly accelerate, brake, or turn, this could impact your CVT. Alter your hard driving habits for a gentler and smoother approach. Also, keep in mind that the CVT can be affected by extreme temperatures, or frequently driving in dusty road conditions.

Remember, you can directly impact your vehicle’s performance and efficiency by giving more attention to how you are treating your vehicle’s CVT. A more attentive approach can mean a lot for your driving experience and prolonging your vehicle’s transmission life. If you have questions or concerns about your vehicle’s continuous variable transmission, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

Winter weather has arrived across the nation, and it’s proving to be a challenge for many drivers. The hazards of winter driving are just one aspect of winter weather that can wreak damage on your vehicle. The cold extremes of winter can have a significant impact on your engine’s performance and operation. In this month’s blog post, we examine the drawbacks of winter weather woes on your vehicle and steps you can take to keep your vehicle protected from damage during the winter season.

Winter Weather Impacts

There’s no doubt that the extremes of winter can affect your vehicle’s engine, especially the colder temperatures. You may find premature wear and tear on your vehicle’s engine and components because of harsh winter weather.

Winter weather can impact your vehicle in several ways:

Coolant efficacy is lowered by colder temperatures. Coolant is an important fluid that reduces engine heat. When parts are not properly cooled, they can be damaged through overheating or seizing up.

Oil thickens in colder temperatures. The thicker the oil, the less effective it is at lubricating the engine parts. You may need to replace your current oil with lower viscosity oil to ensure that the oil can move through engine components and keep them lubricated and clean.

Engine block issues may be the result of frozen coolant. The engine block houses your engine’s cylinders and other components. If coolant is low on antifreeze, or low in general, it may freeze and crack the engine block.

Engine components are susceptible to corrosion and rust from road salt and other chemicals. Icy and snowy roads that are heavily salted may result in engine corrosion if the vehicle is not cleaned regularly during winter months.

Symptoms of Winter Weather Damage

If your vehicle’s components have been affected by winter weather, you may experience specific symptoms that indicate a problem. These include:

Leaking coolant may be from a cracked engine block, gasket, or other parts.

Engine stalling or hesitation may be from thick oil, or if there is water or dirt somewhere within the system.

Overheating of the engine may be from coolant problems – either it is not circulating through the engine, or the radiator is blocked by debris like ice or snow.

Your vehicle tires can also be impacted by colder temperatures, losing their pressure, or becoming worn from rough driving conditions.

Keep Your Vehicle Safe from Winter Weather

If you stay on top of your vehicle’s maintenance routine, you can protect your vehicle from cold weather damage. Make sure that your routine includes these common tasks:

Regular oil changes. Make sure to change the oil viscosity according to manufacturer specs for colder weather.

Tire pressure checks. Your vehicle may have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and can show you when the pressure may be low. If not, use a gauge to check your tires regularly. Also, consider using all-season or winter tires to ensure better road traction in icy and snowy conditions.

Coolant level checks. Keep your coolant level maintained, and have your vehicle checked if there are frequent drops in coolant level. Make sure to mix your coolant with the right amount of antifreeze, according to manufacturer specs.

Wash your vehicle frequently. Keeping the road salt off the exterior and bottom of your vehicle reduces the change of corrosion and rust.

Maintain at least ½ tank of gas in the tank. When the gas tank is low, there’s more risk of having water condense in the tank and cause freezing in the fuel lines.

Winter weather is here to stay for a few more months. Make sure to keep your vehicle protected from the hazards of harsh weather by adopting a few winter weather tasks. If you would like to have your vehicle inspected for any possible winter damage, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

Oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It lubricates the engine’s moving parts, reduces friction, prevents overheating, and helps maintain the overall health of your vehicle. However, oil leaks can lead to serious engine damage if not addressed promptly. In this month’s blog post, we examine the top six signs that your vehicle may have an oil leak.

Six Signs of an Oil Leak

Oil Stains Under the Vehicle: If you notice dark brown or black puddles under your vehicle, it’s a clear sign of an oil leak. Check the ground where you usually park your vehicle for any oil stains. Smaller stains are just as serious and should also be addressed by a service professional.

Low Oil Level: Regularly check your vehicle’s oil level using the dipstick. If the oil level is consistently low even after topping it up, it could indicate an oil leak.

Check Engine or Oil Light: The vehicle dashboard can indicate a possible oil leak or provide you with an alert that your engine may be low on oil. If this is consistently happening after replenishing oil, then you may have a leak.

Smoke from the Engine: Excessive smoke from the exhaust pipe, especially blue smoke, can be a sign of oil leaking into the combustion chamber.

Oil Smell Inside the Car: If you smell burning oil inside the car, it could be due to an oil leak. The smell is often accompanied by smoke from the engine or under the hood. You may have oil that is dripping on hot parts and creating smoke while burning it off.

Overheating Engine: Oil leaks can lead to insufficient lubrication, causing the engine to overheat. If your temperature gauge is consistently high, it’s time to check for oil leaks.

If you notice any of these signs, it is crucial to address the issue immediately to prevent further damage. Start by identifying the source of the leak. It could be due to a faulty gasket, seal, or even a loose filler cap. In some cases, the oil pan or plug might be damaged. Once you have identified the source, you can decide whether it’s a simple fix that you can handle yourself or if it’s better to take your vehicle to a professional.

Remember, timely maintenance can save you from costly repairs down the line. If you have concerns about a possible oil leak in your vehicle, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment. We will inspect your vehicle, determine the source of the problem, and address it with any repairs or replacements.

The computerized vehicle diagnostic system, often referred to as an On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system, is a sophisticated piece of technology that plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of your vehicle. In this month’s blog, we discuss how the OBD may not always pinpoint the source of your vehicle’s problem without further exploration by a trained service professional.

How does the OBD system work?

The OBD system works by continuously receiving and analyzing data from various sensors located throughout the vehicle. These sensors measure everything from engine temperature to oxygen levels in the exhaust gases.

When you connect an OBD scanner to your vehicle (usually via a port under the dashboard), you can access these trouble codes. Each code corresponds to a specific problem, which can then be diagnosed and fixed by a service professional.

Are the OBD codes always accurate?

When a vehicle’s computer reports a problem, it is common for drivers to assume that the computer has identified the faulty component and that replacing it will fix the issue. However, this is not always the case.

Often, there is a reason for the code that is not the result of a component failure. For example, if a vehicle has a bad thermostat, it may trigger a code for a coolant sensor out of range. The computer expects a certain signal after a few minutes of running time, which it may not receive because the engine failed to reach operating temperature. Similarly, if an engine stalls, the crank position sensor may report a loss of speed signal. However, the crank sensor is reporting the fact that the engine stopped running and changing that sensor would not fix the stalling.

Verifying OBD readings

Because the OBD readings may not always pinpoint the problem, it is important to perform a thorough diagnosis before replacing any components. A visual inspection can help identify any obvious issues. If nothing is apparent, further testing may be required to determine the exact reason for the check engine light, or malfunction indicator light (MIL).

For instance, if you get a code for loss of signal from the camshaft actuator, it is important to perform a visual inspection and fault memory read before replacing any components. In some cases, small rodents may have moved in under the hood of your car and eaten all sorts of stuff causing issues with your car.

See the photos below of a recent example where the diagnostic did not tell the entire story.

The pictures show an example of a recent camshaft indicator error that turned out to be damage from rodents.

To ensure that your vehicle is properly serviced, it is important not to jump to conclusions when your vehicle’s computer reports an issue. Instead, take your car to an experienced technician who can perform a thorough diagnosis and recommend appropriate testing to determine the exact reason for the MIL.

Just as engine oil is essential for the smooth operation of your vehicle’s engine, transmission fluid plays a crucial role in the functioning of your vehicle’s transmission. When the level of transmission fluid drops for various reasons, it can compromise your transmission. A compromised transmission can lead to a complete transmission failure, which can be an expensive problem for vehicle owners. In this blog post, we delve into the common signs of low transmission fluid to help you prevent a total breakdown of your vehicle’s transmission.

Understanding Transmission Fluid

Depending on the type of transmission in your vehicle, you may have either automatic or manual transmission fluid. Transmission fluid is a synthetic fluid that is designed to lubricate the gears and components of your transmission, provide hydraulic pressure and friction to the automatic transmission, and control the temperature of this hard-working component of your vehicle.

Why is Transmission Fluid Low?

While your vehicle’s transmission fluid may naturally burn off over time, it is usually not enough to cause a significant drop in the level. The main reason for low transmission fluid is a leak within the transmission system. Sometimes, the leak may be in the transmission pan or due to a faulty gasket. At other times, the leak may occur somewhere along the transmission line. A slow leak is more challenging to detect because it may burn off in the engine before appearing on the ground beneath the vehicle. Transmission fluid is easy to spot if there is a significant leak due to its bright red color. Older transmission fluid changes color and may appear as a darker red or even brownish hue.

If you find that your transmission fluid is low, top it up so that it continues to perform its necessary function for the transmission components. If the fluid level continues to be low, it should be inspected by a service professional.

Signs of Low Transmission Fluid

In addition to regularly checking the level of transmission fluid, there are some signs and symptoms that can indicate that your vehicle’s transmission fluid is low. If you are not inclined to check the level regularly, then watch out for these symptoms.

When Should Transmission Fluid Be Changed?

Modern vehicle transmissions are more efficient and in some cases, may never require a change of transmission fluid. However, if you do a lot of heavy driving, you might consider changing your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles driven. When checking the fluid level, also look at its color and viscosity. The darker and thicker the fluid, the more urgent the need for replacement.

How familiar are you with the common engine problems that you may experience with your vehicle? If you are on the road often, it is important to have a baseline understanding of problems that may impact your vehicle’s engine and your overall driving performance. In this month’s blog post, we review some of the more common problems you may experience with your engine. All these issues should be addressed promptly by a service professional to avoid complications to your engine or its components.

Overheating: Your engine’s cooling system protects the components of your vehicle from the extreme temperatures of your combustible engine. As liquid coolant circulates your engine, it absorbs the heat. When coolant is low or leaking, this may cause your vehicle to overheat. Other reasons for overheating may be clogged hoses, a head gasket problem, or a faulty thermostat.

Smoke: Smoke is never a good sign coming from the engine. In many cases, smoke may mean there’s some type of leak, and the fluid such as oil, is burning off on the hot engine components. Dark smoke from the exhaust system is also something you may see if there are engine problems. Dark smoke can mean that your engine is burning excessive fuel or there is a contamination somewhere in the engine. A dirty air filter or faulty fuel injector may be the culprit.

Stalling: If you are experiencing a significant amount of stalling, there could be a range of reasons why this is happening. A lot depends on when you may be stalling – for example, if you are stalling right after ignition. Or are you stalling when your vehicle is idling, say at a traffic light? Stalling can be the result of many things including fuel and ignition problems, a clogged air filter, exhaust system issues, or electrical malfunctioning. Take notice when it is happening and what you are experiencing.

Sounds: Every engine has normal sounds during operation. But most drivers are familiar with the ones they should be hearing and are usually in tune with those that are new or unusual. If you start to hear knocking sounds, that may be from an improper air/fuel mixture or fuel injector issue. Thumping or banging may be from a loose belt. Pay careful attention to when you hear the sounds, what type of sound it is, and where it is generally coming from in the engine.

Oil Consumption: While there is some normal oil burn off in your engine, any excessive consumption of oil is an indication of a problem. If your oil levels are continuously low, check underneath the vehicle for a possible leak. The main culprit of oil leaks is faulty or worn seals and gaskets. Another possible cause is that the oil has leaked into the combustion chamber and is being burned off by the engine. If this is the case, you may have a crankcase issue.

Your vehicle’s engine is a complex piece of machinery. When one of the components fails, it can create a chain of other issues that grow over time. If you notice anything unusual with your engine, have it inspected by a service professional. It’s much easier to pay a small amount for proactive service, then end up with costly repairs for ignoring potential issues.

If you would like to have your engine inspected, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

If you own a vehicle, you probably know that regular maintenance is essential to keep it running smoothly and safely. But sometimes, life gets in the way, and you may be tempted to ignore some minor problems or postpone some routine services. However, this can be a costly mistake that can lead to bigger issues down the road. In this month’s blog post, we highlight the top 10 ignored issues in your vehicle and what can go wrong if you neglect them.

Cracked windshield

A cracked windshield may seem like a cosmetic issue, but it can impair your vision and compromise your safety. This can be dangerous, as cracks can spread and weaken the glass, making it more prone to shattering in an accident or under extreme temperature changes. A cracked windshield can also affect the performance of your airbags and reduce the structural integrity of your vehicle.

Wheels not aligned

If you notice that your vehicle pulls to one side, vibrates excessively, or wears out tires unevenly, you may have a wheel alignment problem. Wheels out of alignment can affect your steering, handling, and fuel efficiency. They can also cause premature wear and tear on your tires, suspension, and brakes.

Overdue oil change

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine, as it lubricates, cools, and cleans its moving parts. However, over time, oil loses its effectiveness and becomes contaminated with dirt, debris, and metal particles. This can cause friction, heat, and corrosion in your engine, leading to reduced performance and possible damage.

Bald or worn-out tires

Tires are one of the most important components of your vehicle, as they provide traction, stability, and braking power. However, tires lose their tread depth and grip over time, making them less effective and safe. Bald or worn-out tires can affect your handling, fuel economy, and stopping distance. They can also increase the risk of hydroplaning, punctures, and blowouts.

Check engine light

The check engine light is a warning sign that something is wrong with your vehicle’s emission system or engine performance. It can indicate a variety of problems, from a loose gas cap to a faulty oxygen sensor to a serious engine malfunction. This can be costly, as ignoring the check engine light can lead to further damage to your engine or catalytic converter, which can result in expensive repairs or replacements.

Worn brakes

Brakes are essential for your safety and control on the road, as they allow you to slow down or stop your vehicle when needed. However, brakes wear out over time and become less responsive and effective. Sluggish brakes can affect your braking distance, steering ability, and stability. They can also cause noise, vibration, and overheating in your brake system.

Noise from the engine or wheels

Noise from the engine or wheels can be a sign of a problem with your vehicle’s components, such as the belts, bearings, pistons, or axles. Noise from the engine or wheels can indicate wear and tear, friction, or damage in your vehicle’s parts. It can also affect your comfort, performance, and fuel efficiency.

Slow leak in a tire

A slow leak in a tire can be caused by a puncture, a valve stem problem, a bead leak, or a faulty seal. A slow leak in a tire can affect your tire pressure, which can impact your handling, fuel economy, and tire life. It can also increase the risk of tire failure, blowouts, and accidents.

Empty windshield fluid reservoir

Windshield fluid is important for your visibility and safety on the road, as it helps you clean your windshield from dirt, dust, bugs, and other debris. However, windshield fluid can run out over time and leave you with an empty reservoir. An empty windshield fluid reservoir can affect your ability to see clearly and avoid hazards on the road. It can also damage your windshield wipers and pump if you try to use them without fluid.

Broken headlight

A broken headlight can be caused by a burnt-out bulb, faulty wiring, a cracked lens, or a collision. A broken headlight can affect your visibility and recognition on the road, especially at night or in bad weather conditions. It can also make you less visible to other drivers and pedestrians, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.

As you can see, ignoring these common vehicle problems can have serious consequences for your vehicle’s performance, safety, and value. That’s why you should address them as soon as possible and prevent them from getting worse. By doing so, you can save yourself time, money, and hassle in the long run.

Keeping up with vehicle maintenance like regular oil changes can be a challenge in today’s busy world. While most drivers do their best to stay on top of their oil and filter changes, this task can easily be neglected as time slips by. So, what happens when you do not change your oil as often as you should? In this month’s blog post, we review the impacts of infrequent oil changes on your vehicle and your bottom-line.

An oil and filter change are one of the most important maintenance routines you can follow to keep your vehicle in good health and performance. Oil serves many purposes for the vehicle, including lubrication of parts, engine cleaning, and helping to regulate temperature.

Many more vehicle owners are opting to use synthetic oils because they last longer and do not require the frequency of changes as conventional oil products. Our rule of thumb based on experience is for motor oil to be changed every 3,000 miles and never exceed 5,000. For the synthetic oils it’s every 6,000 miles, never exceed 10,000. If you exceed those timeframes the oil breaks down and burning and sludging occur. While long intervals early in the car’s life has minimal impact, long term it has detrimental effects.

But what happens when you miss one or more oil and filter change?

Let’s look at three problems you may experience.

Warranty Issues

If you have a newer vehicle under warranty, make sure to read the entire warranty to be clear about your obligations. Most vehicle warranties require that you get oil and filter changes on a specific schedule. If you fail to perform this maintenance, it may void your warranty. If you get your oil changes performed at a dealership, this information is associated with your vehicle’s history. However, if you do your oil changes on your own or in private shops, you may need to maintain evidence of oil changes such as receipts or invoices. Review your specific vehicle warranty to fully understand your responsibilities with oil changes.

Dirty Oil and Vehicle Performance

The longer your motor oil remains in the engine, the dirtier it gets. Motor oil is manufactured with various detergent additives that help to remove grime and dirt from the engine. As the oil circulates through the engine parts, it carries the dirt to the oil filter where it is trapped. If the filter becomes too dirty, it will clog and force the dirty oil back into the engine. Clean oil is opaque and dirty oil will be dark and sludgy. This thick oil will diminish your vehicle’s performance and cause the engine to work harder. This will also increase your fuel consumption and cost more at the pump.

Engine Failure

When oil ages and thickens, it has less ability to absorb the heat from the engine. This could result in your vehicle overheating, or even blowing a gasket. A blown gasket is an expensive repair that you want to avoid. The lubricating properties of oil are also reduced when the oil is thick and dirty. This means that your engine parts will begin to rub together, and this grinding will cause damage or seizing up if they are not properly lubricated.

We all live busy lives but skipping your vehicle’s oil and filter changes can cost you much more in the end if they are neglected. Make sure that you are disciplined about your oil and filter changes, so you can avoid bigger problems like a voided warranty, or severe damage resulting from dirty and aging oil.

If you would like to get your vehicle on a regular maintenance plan, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage today to schedule an appointment.

According to a study by S&P Global Mobility, the average age of light vehicles in the US is 12.5 years. This means that more Americans are holding on to their vehicles longer to save money. If you have owned your vehicle for several years, you know that an aging vehicle will develop problems because of wear and tear. Even with the best maintenance routine, your vehicle systems may experience damage or failure as it ages. In this month’s blog post, we look at common problems that may surface over time in your aging vehicle.

Wear and Tear

Your vehicle is a complex machine that is subjected to significant wear and tear over its lifetime. From the function of the combustion engine, to hazards of the road and weather, wear and tear can eventually take a toll on a vehicle.

The three factors of wear and tear that are most damaging include corrosion, friction, and temperature.

Corrosion

Because your vehicle is comprised of various parts made from metals, plastics, and other synthetic components, it is susceptible to dirt, grime, and rust. These elements can cause corrosion. For example, if you live and drive in an area where the roads are salted in the winter, salt can easily damage and corrode the underbody of the vehicle and other engine parts.

Friction

When in operation, your vehicle produces motion that can result in friction of parts. The parts of your engine are moving quickly and need to be able to move freely without any impediments. If those parts are not well-lubricated, they may rub together and wear down or become damaged over time.

Temperature

Your vehicle experiences temperature extremes from its basic operation as well as the climate where you live and drive. Many vehicle systems use a specific type of oil or fluid to help regulate temperature. When those fluids degrade or leak, parts will begin to malfunction.

Signs of Aging in Vehicle Systems

Each of your vehicle’s systems may begin to show signs of wear and tear over time and may need more repairs or even replacement of major components. Below is a table that highlights some of the common problems these vehicle systems may experience as the vehicle ages.

Do you have a problem with your vehicle’s driveshaft? This important component of your vehicle’s drivetrain is critical for transferring power from the transmission to your wheels, enabling your vehicle to move. In this month’s blog post, we look at the function of the driveshaft and what signs to look for if there is some type of failure.

The Drivetrain

Before we consider the driveshaft, it is important to understand the purpose of the vehicle drivetrain. This term applies to the vehicle components that are responsible for collectively transferring power from the engine to drive the vehicle.

The drivetrain consists of the transmission, axles, wheels, differential, and of course, the driveshaft. The drivetrain is different from the powertrain, which is a term used to describe the overall components of the vehicle that create kinetic energy that is used by the drivetrain, mainly the vehicle engine.

If you experience a problem with your drivetrain, you should check to see what type of warranty is offered on your vehicle. Because repairs can be quite costly, it is helpful to know what coverage you may be offered by your vehicle manufacturer.

The Driveshaft

A component of the drivetrain, the driveshaft is a cylindrical steel rod that sits on the underside of your vehicle. It is positioned differently based on the type of drive system. For example, a four-wheel drive vehicle has two driveshafts to power the front and rear wheels, while a rear wheel drive has one that connects to the transmission. The driveshaft provides rotational power from the transmission to the differential, which eventually creates the spinning of the wheels.

The constant rotational motion of the driveshaft makes it susceptible to wear and tear, and possible damage. Additionally, driving hazards like potholes and towing excessive weight can impact the proper balance optimization of the driveshaft.

Symptoms of Driveshaft Problems

Problems with your vehicle’s driveshaft may create specific symptoms that may indicate a need for servicing.

These symptoms include:

Vibration or shuddering: Because the driveshaft is balanced for optimization, you may experience shuddering if it becomes imbalanced. This may be more apparent when you are accelerating from low to high speeds. A loose or disconnected driveshaft may also cause intense vibration when operating the vehicle. It is vital to have your vehicle inspected right away if you experience either of these symptoms. The problem may lie with the universal joints, couplers, or bushings.

Unusual noises: Failure to your driveshaft can result in unusual noises from the underside, such as a clanking or popping sound. There may be a problem with your CV joint or other components, and this should be addressed right away. Ignoring these issues may only escalate the problem further within your drivetrain.

Turning resistance: If you are having difficulty turning the wheels, or heavy resistance on a turn, this may indicate a driveshaft problem. If you experience this problem while in motion, the best thing to do is pull to a safe area off the road and contact roadside assistance.

Keep Your Driveshaft Maintained

To keep your driveshaft in good working condition, you should periodically have it inspected for wear and tear, and the parts lubricated within the drivetrain. Proper lubrication is critical for keeping parts from wearing due to friction. Also, you should be cautious with your driving habits, and avoid potholes when possible. If you tow heavy loads on your vehicle, make sure to have the vehicle inspected occasionally to check for any damage or wear to your driveshaft.

If you have concerns about your drivetrain or driveshaft, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment.

At some point in your driving history, you may experience a flat tire. Being prepared for a flat tire does not just include having a spare, it requires that you have all the necessary tools, and your spare tire is in good working condition. In this month’s blog post, we review some helpful tips for flat tire preparation, so you are not stuck on the side of the road waiting for roadside assistance.

To ensure that you have everything you need in the event of a flat tire, we suggest that you complete the steps at least once a year.

Check your Spare Tire

The first task is to check that you have a spare tire, and you can easily access it in your vehicle. Make sure you know what type of spare tire you have in the vehicle. The common types include:

A full-sized tire that either matches or does not match your other tires

A full-size temporary spare tire

A compact temporary spare tire (also referred to as a donut tire)

Other options: Folding compact spare tires, or in some vehicles, manufacturers are no longer including a spare but a spray material designed to fill your flat tire so you can drive until it is repaired or replaced.

Now that you have verified that you have a spare, make sure that the spare is properly inflated. You should consult with your owner’s manual for inflation specifications, and/or your tire manufacturer. Many roadside assistance services report that drivers many times have spares that are inadequately inflated.

Check your Equipment

As you are inspecting your spare tire, make sure to confirm that you have all the necessary equipment to change the tire.

The tire jack

Lug nut remover

Lug nut lock key

Inflatable spray or air

Air pressure gauge

Enhance your Safety

Changing a tire can be a dangerous task when you are on the side of the road. To ensure that you are safe, always keep the following items in your vehicle:

A flashlight with replacement batteries

Roadside flares

Safety cones

Hand cleaner and a rag

As the temperatures warm up and you prepare for your next road trip, take a few minutes to go over your spare tire checklist and save yourself a wait on the side of the road. If you would like to have your spare tire checked out, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to set up an appointment.

You can learn a lot about your vehicle – if you just listen. As a vehicle owner, it is important to pay attention to what your vehicle’s engine may be telling you through the unusual sounds that it makes. In this month’s blog post, we review the five engine sounds that should never be ignored. Not all unusual engine sounds spell disaster but if you listen more and act quickly, you may be able to avoid the inconvenience of costly repairs for a vehicle in the shop.

Grinding

There are a variety of places where grinding sound can be coming from in the engine. For example, the transmission is notorious for grinding sounds or it could be from worn bearings or the CV joint. Grinding is usually the result of engine parts rubbing up against each other – sometimes due to insufficient lubrication. If you are not able to pinpoint where the sound is coming from then have it inspected by a service professional. Try to make note of when you hear the grinding sound (such as when you are shifting gears) or if it is constant while driving.

Squealing

Squealing is another sound you typically do not want to hear in your vehicle. It really depends on where the source of this problem is, and it can sometimes be pinpointed by when you hear the sound. For example, if you hear a squealing sound when depressing the brakes, there is likely a problem with the braking system components. But if you hear a squealing sound while accelerating, this could be a sign of a belt issue. Brake issues are a safety concern, and so it is advisable to have the vehicle inspected once you start to hear any squealing. Belt issues should be addressed promptly to avoid a broken belt that will strand you on the side of the road.

Clicking

Clicking sounds are usually tied to your oil level. Some professionals may say that the sound is either a clicking, ticking, or tapping sound. If the vehicle is low on oil, this may be the issue. A quick check of the oil level is a starting point. If you notice the oil level is low, replenish the oil but make sure to have your vehicle inspected to determine if there is a leak somewhere in the engine.

Knocking

Knocking sounds may be caused by the air/fuel mixture in the engine. The combustion system requires the proper amount of air and fuel mixture and when that is off, you may hear knocking sounds. Make sure that you are putting the right octane level of fuel into your vehicle. A service professional may want to look at the timing or knock sensors.

Sizzling

You may hear this sound when you turn off the engine and it is still hot. The sizzling sound is usually caused by a leak of some type as the leaking fluid is burning off on the hot engine parts. This could be leaking oil or coolant somewhere within the engine.

Your vehicle’s engine is a complex machine that will make a variety of sounds during its operation. Being attentive to these sounds and the unusual ones is a good way to stay on top of small issues before they become large and expensive problems.

If you have concerns about any unusual sounds coming from your vehicle, contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an appointment and vehicle inspection.

It’s that time of year again when you consider your new year’s resolutions. About 84% of resolutions are about improving mental or physical fitness, according to Forbes. In addition to your personal health, try something different this year and make some resolutions for improving your vehicle health. In this month’s blog post, we offer ideas on how to set a vehicle health resolution to keep your vehicle running effectively and keep your repair bills down.

We have structured these resolutions into three categories based on timing and who is responsible for managing the maintenance tasks.

Monthly maintenance checks.

Periodic maintenance tasks.

Factory scheduled maintenance tasks.

Monthly Maintenance Checks

For the most part, the monthly maintenance checks do not require more than a quick inspection. These checks can easily be completed by you and are proactive ways to stay on top of any developing issues with your vehicle.

To implement these checks, schedule a monthly task reminder on your mobile device, or pick a date on your monthly calendar that you will consistently perform these checks.

Monthly maintenance checks should include:

Measuring and adjusting tire pressure on all four tires.

Inspecting tire treads for wear and tear.

Checking vehicle fluid levels and replenishing, as needed.

Inspecting and/or cleaning battery terminals.

You can purchase inexpensive devices to help you with your checks, such as:

A simple pressure gauge

A tire tread measurement tool

If you notice any irregularities in any of your checks, get in touch with a service professional before any complications develop.

Periodic Maintenance Tasks

If you are the “do it yourself” type of vehicle owner, then you can also handle some or all the periodic tasks. If you are looking to save time, then consider having an auto service professional take on these tasks. At Shade Tree Garage, we can work with you to design a maintenance plan that fits your budget and vehicle needs.

Periodic maintenance tasks should include:

Changing oil and filter

Checking and replenishing vehicle fluids, as needed

Inspecting your vehicle belts and hoses

Replacing engine and cabin filters

Inspecting the brake system, such as pads, rotors, and calipers

Inspecting the transmission and steering

Completing wheel alignment, tire rotation, or balancing

Repairing or replacing other items, as necessary, such as wiper blades.

When working with a service professional at Shade Tree Garage, we will maintain thorough records of any maintenance and/or repairs so that you can track your vehicle health throughout the year.

Factory-scheduled Maintenance Tasks

Although factory-scheduled maintenance tasks may not fit into your yearly resolution, it is important to stay on top of any necessary maintenance of vehicle systems over time. For example, brake fluid flushes are an important part of your vehicle’s lifecycle and should not be neglected. Brake fluid flushes are typically recommended every three years, or 30,000 miles driven.

Speak with the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage to identify those long-term maintenance tasks that need to be included in your ongoing plan.

When it comes to responsible vehicle ownership, ongoing maintenance is a priority. Ongoing maintenance for many vehicle owners only includes standard tasks such as oil changes, system fluid checks, tire rotations, and tire pressure.

But what about the bigger maintenance tasks? Where do they fit into your vehicle lifecycle?

In this month’s blog post, we review the 30/60/90-thousand-mile maintenance routine, its benefits, and what’s involved in this maintenance plan.

What is the 30/60/90-thousand Mile Routine?

Many auto manufacturers and vehicle dealerships have adopted a routine preventative maintenance plan for major vehicle systems set at 30,000-mile intervals. These intervals are timed to correspond with the various needs of these systems, and this is sometimes referred to as factory scheduled maintenance. Regardless of how old your vehicle is right now, it’s helpful to use this maintenance routine as your standard.

Why is it beneficial to adhere to a 30/60/90-thousand Mile Routine?

Your vehicle is a significant investment, and it should be properly maintained so that you have reliable and safe transportation. Many vehicle owners tend to overlook factory scheduled maintenance because they feel some of the tasks are not necessary. However, adhering to a plan brings value to you in several ways, including:

It may be necessary to keep you compliant with your vehicle’s warranty.

Small problems may be caught before they become big and expensive ones and save you money in the long run.

Factory scheduled maintenance can protect your investment and extend the longevity of your vehicle.

Factory scheduled maintenance tasks will improve the overall performance of your vehicle and driving experience.

What Maintenance is Covered in the 30/60/90-thousand Mile Routine?

If applicable, many major maintenance routines may start with a full check of the vehicle’s computer diagnostics. Many vehicle functions in today’s newer vehicles are controlled by computers and software. To check diagnostics, service technicians use a type of “diagnostic reading tool” that can download information about the major systems. A diagnostic check is helpful because it can identify possible problem areas that need to be inspected further during the maintenance routine.

If the diagnostics pass, then the service may include some or all the following tasks:

Checking and/or replacing any aged or dirty vehicle fluids, such as transmission, power steering, brakes, and others.

Inspecting and servicing the brakes, as needed.

Replacing spark plugs and/or plug wires.

Replacing engine and cabin filters, if necessary.

Tire inspection and rotation, checking tire pressure, and possibly balancing if tires indicate premature wear.

Inspection of belts and hoses, especially the timing belt.

Other miscellaneous items that may need repair or replacement. For example, windshield wipers.

If you are interested in vehicle maintenance beyond the occasional oil change, give us a call at Shade Tree Garage. We can work with you to identify the right plan for your vehicle and one that meets your budget needs. During our servicing, we will never make repairs or replacements with discussing them with you and you can trust the service professionals and their expertise at Shade Tree Garage to service your vehicle carefully, efficiently, and thoroughly.

An ongoing maintenance routine is an important part of keeping your vehicle running smoothly and mitigating costly mechanical problems. Part of this maintenance plan includes keeping your transmission fluid at the appropriate level and periodically replacement of the fluid, when necessary. Without this vital fluid, your transmission is not able to operate. In this month’s blog post, we highlight the purpose and importance of transmission fluid, and considerations for choosing the right fluid for replacement when conducting ongoing maintenance.

Transmission Fluid Purpose and Importance

There are many critical fluids that support your vehicle systems., including the transmission. Transmission fluid is a specifically formulated product that lubricates transmission parts, helps to keep temperatures controlled, and acts as a hydraulic fluid to power some transmission components.

While transmission fluid does not need frequent replacement like motor oil, it will degrade over time and be exposed to various contaminants. It is advisable to keep an eye on your fluid levels, especially if you do a lot of heavy driving or if you drive a manual transmission. Replacement times vary based on many factors including your vehicle make, transmission type, and your driving habits. Consult with your owner’s manual for the recommended timeframe to replace transmission fluid.

If you are consistently adding transmission fluid, this may be a sign of a leak within your transmission. You may also notice evidence of leaked transmission fluid beneath the vehicle. Have your transmission inspected as soon as possible to avoid damage or costly repairs to your vehicle transmission.

Choose the Right Fluid

If you do notice the fluid is low, or needs replacement, then make sure to choose the right fluid for your vehicle.

The easiest way to pick the right fluid is to use the manufacturer recommended transmission fluid from your owner’s manual for your specific make and model vehicle.

Here are some starters on different transmission fluid considerations for your vehicle:

Conventional or Synthetic – in most newer vehicles, you have the option to use conventional fluid, which is petroleum based, or synthetic. Conventional fluids work fine but synthetics have been engineered to handle higher temperatures and outperform the conventional fluids. The downside of the synthetics is the cost.

Dexron and Mercon – Dexron and Mercon are two popular brands that are made by General Motors and Ford. These automatic transmission fluids (ATFs) are compatible with a range of vehicle makes and models and, in some cases, on some foreign vehicles as well.

HFM Style Fluid – this fluid comes in a variety of brand names and shares many similarities to Dexron and Mercon. However, the HFM (high friction modified) fluids have a different viscosity level designed for some vehicle transmissions.

If you have not checked your transmission fluid in a while or would like to add this to a comprehensive maintenance plan, give us a call today at Shade Tree Garage. We can work with you to identify the best maintenance routine that addresses your vehicle and budgetary needs.

If you have ever heard the term “drivetrain” used in reference to your vehicle, this is the system responsible for transferring power from the engine to your vehicle’s wheels to make it drive. The term drivetrain pertains to essential components of your vehicle including the transmission, driveshaft, differential, and wheels. In this month’s blog post, we explain the purpose of the one key component, the driveshaft. We explain the driveshaft’s purpose and examine the problems and signs to look for when there may be a problem with this critical part of the drivetrain.

What is the Driveshaft?

The driveshaft has a very specific role in the drivetrain – to transfer the torque (i.e.. rotational force) from the transmission to the differential. From there, the differential provides the torque to the necessary wheels to produce movement.

The driveshaft goes under various names, depending on the type of drive system within your vehicle (such as front or rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive). The driveshaft may sometimes be called the propeller shaft, Cardan shaft, or simply the prop shaft.

The driveshaft is a long, cylindrical steel shaft, that may be solid or hollow and the position of the driveshaft under the vehicle may vary depending on the type of drive system.

Driveshaft Problems

Your vehicle’s driveshaft spins at high speeds to transfer the power to your wheels, and so it must be balanced and weighted accordingly. If something affects the driveshaft, it will impact the ability to drive your vehicle.

Some of the more common causes of driveshaft problems include:

Hazardous road surfaces such as potholes, which can damage the driveshaft.

Worn bearings can disrupt the driveshaft’s ability to spin and provide power to the remainder of the drivetrain. Bearings are metal balls that help reduce friction within spinning components.

Excessive vehicle weight or overloading of the vehicle – such as pulling heavy loads.

Wear, tear, or corrosion of the universal joints. The universal joints are the connectors between the transmission and the driveshaft.

Symptoms of a Bad Driveshaft

Since the operation of the driveshaft is critical to the drivability of your vehicle, there are some symptoms that you may experience that may be associated with a bad driveshaft.

Vibration: Vibration can be a sign of many different vehicle problems. But with a driveshaft, excessive vibration is a sign that there is damage to your driveshaft. Usually, the vibration is the result of worn or damaged universal joints. Avoiding this symptom can result in further damage to your overall drivetrain, so it must be addressed promptly.

Turning Issues: If you are having difficulty turning your vehicle, or unable to do it at all, this is a possible symptom of a broken driveshaft. Again, this issue must be remedied quickly because it represents a safety concern.

Unusual Noises: Unusual noises are also another common symptom of many different vehicle problems. However, if connected with the other listed symptoms, this may indicate a driveshaft problem. Universal joints that are worn, or not properly lubricated, can result in unusual sounds coming from the underside of the vehicle such as rattling, clanking, scraping, or knocking.

Erratic Acceleration: If the vehicle is erratic or shudders when moving from low speed to high, this could be a symptom of a bad drivetrain. The issue may stem from worn or damaged universal joints.

Because many of the symptoms of a bad driveshaft may resemble other vehicle issues, it’s important to have your vehicle inspected by a service professional to determine the root cause of the vehicle problems. If you have concerns that you may have a developing problem with your driveshaft, contact us here at Shade Tree Garage to schedule an inspection of your drivetrain.
