Nothing can spark panic like seeing a check engine light illuminating your car’s dashboard. Is it still safe to drive? Should I pull over and call a tow truck? How much money is this problem going to cost me? Like I said, pure panic. Take a second to breathe. Some check engine light issues are minor, but a few of them require immediate service. Auto manufacturers design warning lights to assist drivers, so let’s review how they work. Hopefully, after reading the information below, you can determine if your car’s check engine light is warning you about a faulty gas cap, bad oxygen sensor, or dirty spark plug.

What Is The Check Engine Light?

The check engine light is basically an early warning system for your car. Most vehicles manufactured after 1994 have an internal Onboard Diagnostic (OBD or OBD-II) computer. It monitors vehicle performance and generates trouble codes when there is a problem. This computer uses a microprocessor to read inputs from numerous system sensors in real time.

These readings calculate how the various electronically controlled systems react to actual driving situations. When operating correctly, these systems create efficient and safe operational conditions. When readings fall outside pre-determined safety ranges, the onboard computer illuminates a dashboard warning light and produces an error code.

How Do I Read Check Engine Light Error Codes?

You need a scanner or code reader to access the dashboard warning light codes, which you can purchase one at your local auto parts retailer or online. You can also schedule a diagnostic service at your trusted auto service center. The OBD port accesses the OBD-II system via an electrical plug that scanners, code readers, and other devices plug into. It is also used for other reasons, like software updates and state vehicle inspections. You can find the OBD port in one of several different locations:

Under the steering column

Near the center of the dashboard

In the center console

Under the glove box

Read your owner’s manual if you have trouble finding it.

10 Reasons For The Check Engine Light

The check engine light can look different depending on your vehicle’s year, make, and model. It may be orange, yellow, or red. It can look like an engine (with or without an exclamation point “!”), or contain words like “Check Engine,” “Service Engine Soon,” or something similar. A check engine light that remains lit requires a quick diagnosis to determine the issue. However, a flashing check engine light points to a more serious problem or damage that requires immediate intervention.

1. Loose Or Faulty Gas Cap

A loose or faulty gas cap can trigger a check engine light due to an emission control system leak. The fuel system operates under pressure, so the onboard computer reacts to a lack of pressure. To avoid triggering a false error, always turn off your car before refueling and ensure the gas cap is replaced securely before leaving the station.

2. Bad Oxygen Sensors (O2)

Oxygen sensors detect the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust when it leaves the engine. Based on the O2 sensor readings, the onboard computer adjusts the fuel injection to maintain the optimal air-to-fuel ratio. When oxygen sensors fail, you may notice a decrease in fuel economy due to an imbalanced ratio. Bad oxygen sensors affect performance and waste fuel. If left uncorrected, bad O2 sensors can damage the spark plugs and catalytic converter.

3. Dirty Mass-Air-Flow Sensor (MAF)

The mass airflow (MAF) sensor is part of the fuel injection system. This sensor measures the air temperature and density (or mass) going into the engine. It determines the correct air-to-fuel ratio required for optimal combustion and fuel efficiency.

4. Vacuum Leak

A vacuum leak occurs due to a cracked intake manifold or a faulty gasket. Vacuum leaks may produce whistling or hissing sounds from the engine, black exhaust smoke, and misfires.

5. Failing Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter reduces dangerous emissions from the exhaust gas before it enters the atmosphere. A converter rarely fails without additional causes, so a full diagnostic inspection will help determine the underlying issues. If your vehicle has a failing catalytic converter, it won’t pass an emissions test and can let harmful fumes into your car. If you feel lightheaded or nauseous when driving, schedule a diagnostic inspection right away.

6. Broken Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils

Properly working spark plugs and ignition coils are required to ignite the air-to-fuel mixture in the cylinders. If they are broken, dirty, or inoperable, the engine may be sluggish and misfire, and your fuel economy can suffer. Many vehicles have specific replacement intervals for spark plugs, so be sure to follow the factory suggestions.

7. Car Battery or Alternator Issues

The engine uses the battery to start, and the alternator charges the car battery while idling and driving. If the voltage readings for either component drop, the check engine light (and maybe the battery light) will illuminate. Car batteries require replacement every 2-6 years, depending on your vehicle, battery type, and where you live. Most alternators have a lifespan of about 7-10 years or 150,000 miles.

8. Clogged Fuel Injectors

The fuel injectors shoot a fine mist of gasoline into the engine to produce combustion. Clogged or dirty injectors may produce too much or too little fuel for complete combustion. This creates an imbalance in the fuel system and possibly the exhaust system. Decreased fuel economy and dashboard warning lights will indicate your vehicle requires service to unclog your fuel injectors.

9. Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

The powertrain control module( PCM) runs your car’s powertrain, integrating the engine and transmission control modules. The PCM improves performance, fuel efficiency, and the emission system. A faulty PCM may trigger a Check Engine Light and create performance issues, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions.

10. Loss Of Compression

Compression loss from a burned or bent valve, worn piston rings, or incorrect valve timing are serious issues that may trigger a Check Engine Light. Rough idle, misfires, and stalls are common symptoms of compression loss.

Owning a car is a significant investment, and it’s no secret that vehicles can come with their fair share of maintenance and repair costs. When faced with a car that’s seen better days, many people grapple with the decision of whether to repair it or replace it with a new one. While both options have their merits, this article will explore the benefits of repairing your car versus replacing it.

Cost-Effectiveness

One of the most compelling reasons to consider repairing your car is the cost-effectiveness it offers. New cars come with hefty price tags, including down payments, monthly loan payments, and increased insurance premiums. Repairing your existing vehicle, on the other hand, can often be a more budget-friendly option.

Repairs tend to cost significantly less than purchasing a new car, especially if your vehicle is relatively young and has been well-maintained. Regular maintenance and occasional repairs can extend your car’s lifespan and save you a substantial amount of money in the long run.

Depreciation

New cars begin to depreciate in value the moment you drive them off the dealership lot. In the first few years of ownership, a new car can lose up to 20-30% of its value. This rapid depreciation can result in a substantial financial loss.

When you repair your existing vehicle, you avoid the depreciation hit that comes with purchasing a new car. While older cars also depreciate, the rate is typically slower, making it a financially smarter choice in the long term.

Familiarity and Comfort

Your current car has likely become a familiar and comfortable space. You know its quirks, the way it handles, and how to operate its features. Replacing it with a new car means adapting to a new vehicle, which can take time and effort.

Repairing your car allows you to continue driving a vehicle you’re already accustomed to. This familiarity can provide a sense of comfort and reduce the stress of adjusting to a new car’s driving experience and features.

Environmental Considerations

Manufacturing a new car is resource-intensive and has a significant environmental impact. The production process consumes energy, emits greenhouse gases, and requires the extraction of raw materials. By opting to repair your existing car, you reduce the demand for new vehicle production and its associated environmental consequences.

Additionally, when you repair and maintain your car, you help extend its lifespan, further reducing the need for new car production and its related environmental costs.

Customization

Over time, you may have customized your car with accessories, modifications, or personal touches that make it uniquely yours. Replacing your vehicle would mean losing these customizations and starting from scratch.

Repairing your car allows you to retain the personalized elements that have made your vehicle special to you. You can continue to enjoy the benefits of your customizations without the need for a new car.

Conclusion

While there are instances where replacing your car is the more practical choice, it’s essential to weigh the benefits of repairing your existing vehicle. Repairing your car can be a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and emotionally satisfying decision. By maintaining and repairing your vehicle, you can enjoy a longer, more cost-efficient, and personalized driving experience while reducing your environmental footprint. So, the next time your car faces a repair dilemma, consider the advantages of keeping it on the road for a little longer.

The recession that hit our nation has changed how people save, invest and spend their money. We have all learned not to be quite so frivolous with our money and our continued and current economic situation has led more consumers to be fairly price conscious. While price is important, it is also important not to sacrifice quality, especially when it comes to your more valuable assets like your vehicle and your home.

When it comes to Auto Repair, Service and Maintenance we have a few tips for good quality at a fair price.

Find an automotive repair facility that you like and trust to take care of your vehicle. They will have all your service and repair history for information on what has already been performed, what needs to be attended to, and can perform the warranty work for any prior work or parts that they have installed.

When you have a computer diagnosis that needs performed, have it diagnosed and repaired by the same repair facility. Then the diagnosis and repair will be guaranteed, and you will not pay multiple diagnostic charges.

There are big differences in the quality of parts that are used in automotive repair industry. Work with a shop that chooses the best replacement part for your car. A lifetime warranty on a part does not hold much value if it needs to be replaced several times due to failure, rendering you helpless in a breakdown situation or having to take your vehicle to a shop several times. The inconvenience and loss of time for you has value too.

Do not let friends, neighbors, and relatives that are not qualified and trained to work on vehicles, attempt to work on your car. Repairs that are performed incorrectly can cost you money, time, safety, reliability and can diminish the value of your vehicle.

The quality of a repair or diagnostic process is not always easy to see. Finding and sticking with a repair facility that you can trust, and that will stand behind their work, with a proven track record and longevity, can give you assurance that any future concerns can be met. Remember, you get what you pay for. Happy Motoring!

Vehicle breakdowns, are inconvenient, expensive and always seem to happen at the worst times. There is also a huge safety factor, getting way off to the side of the road, using flares, hazard flashers and having an emergency kit, a plan and equipment in the event of a breakdown is always a good idea.

According to AAA (American Automobile Association) statistics show that 69 million people in the US breakdown in their vehicle each year. That is 1 in every 3 drivers. Most vehicles on the road are more than 10 years old, on the West Coast our average is 12 years old. Most of these breakdowns were preventable, such electrical or charging system problems, key problems and a flat or blown tire(s) being the top three issues. Coming in a close 4th are engine cooling system issues, that are evident by overheating or leaking.

The National Car Care Council runs A Be Car Care Aware inspections throughout our country on a yearly basis. They state that 80% of the thousands of vehicles that are inspected each year, fail the basic safety inspection. Belts, hoses, fluids, filters, brakes, the charging system, and tires are some of the main items that are checked out during an inspection.

When basics of vehicle maintenance are not being performed this increases the chances of a vehicle breakdown or failure. Having at minimum your vehicle inspected on a semi-annual basis and performing the repairs or maintenance recommended will be the most reliable and cost effective way to avoid breakdowns.

Simple things to have inspected prior to driving especially on a road trip are:

Tire Condition

Tire Pressure

Fluid Levels and Condition

Belts

Hoses

Charging System Test

Wipers

Exterior and Interior Lights

Air, Cabin Air and Fuel Filter

Keep in mind if you have a low level of fluid in any system, engine, cooling, power steering, brake or transmission, there is most likely a leak or reason why. We highly recommend having any leak repaired to prevent a further problem or potential damage to your vehicle.

Our last summer was pretty long and hot, and we have seen a rash of blown head gaskets on vehicles. This is due to cooling systems that are either not being maintained properly and cooling system leaks not being repaired in a timely manner, or not shutting off the vehicle when the vehicle engine temperature starts to get to hot, and having it towed to a repair facility. Extreme overheating and/or multiple overheating of an engine can damage the head gasket, can crack the cylinder head(s), or it can crack the engine block. The other issue we have seen quite a bit of this summer is engine failures, due to engines being run either on low oil or very dirty oil, that it is sludging either internally or in the oil pan causing an oil starvation issue with the engine.

Unfortunately, there are parts on our vehicles that can fail without warning, fuel pumps, alternators, and water pumps are some examples just to name a few. But most breakdowns are preventable so keep that vehicle inspected, perform maintenance as scheduled by mileage and/or age and have the repairs needed performed. It will save you time, money and frustration.

Happy Motoring!

The catalytic converter is vital to a vehicles exhaust system. It can be difficult to notice anything wrong since it isn’t something you see all the time. That said, there are a few things to be on the lookout for to make you aware you are having a problem.

Unusual Noises – sometimes the vehicle may develop a rattling sound. This is caused when the internals crumble and break off over time. It will start to sound like rocks in a tin can.

Poor Fuel Mileage – A clogged catalytic converter can cause poor fuel mileage. The exhaust is pushing back into your engine which alters the air fuel ratio thus affecting the combustion reaction. It will cause a noticeable decrease in fuel mileage. You will be spending more on gas and getting less performance out of it.

Sulphur Smell – When a catalytic converter is no longer properly functioning, one of the side-effects is a bad smell. That smell is produced by the gases flowing through it. In particular, it will have a sulphur type smell. The catalytic converter is a necessary device to convert hydrogen sulfide into sulphur dioxide, which is less harmful. If it’s not working then this process can’t take place and the end result is a smell that’s not unlike rotten eggs.

Check Engine Light – Most of the time, but not always, if it’s not working right, it’ll set off the check engine light. You will need to plug in an OBD2 scanner to your vehicle to diagnose if that is the cause of the engine light.

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, it may be time to replace your catalytic converter. Be sure to consult with a mechanic to get a proper diagnosis and recommendations for a replacement.
