Few things are more frustrating than turning the key — or pressing the start button — only to hear clicking or complete silence from your vehicle. A dead battery is one of the most common causes of a car that won’t start, and knowing how to safely jumpstart a vehicle can save time, money, and stress.

However, jumpstarting a car incorrectly can damage sensitive electrical systems, batteries, or even cause serious injuries.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to jumpstart a car the right way, common mistakes to avoid, and when it’s time to replace the battery instead.

Why Car Batteries Die

Your battery provides the electrical power needed to start the engine and operate vehicle electronics.

Common reasons batteries die include:

Leaving lights on

Extreme temperatures

Old battery age

Corroded terminals

Faulty alternator

Parasitic electrical drains

Long periods without driving

Most car batteries last:

Approximately 3 to 5 years

Eventually, every battery loses its ability to hold a charge.

Signs of a Dead Battery

Before jumpstarting, look for common battery failure symptoms:

Clicking sound when starting

Slow engine cranking

Complete loss of power

If the battery is the issue, a jumpstart may temporarily get the vehicle running again.

What You Need to Jumpstart a Car

To safely jumpstart a vehicle, you’ll need:

Jumper cables

Safety Precautions Before Jumpstarting

Safety should always come first.

Before connecting anything:

1. Park Vehicles Safely

Step 1: Position the Vehicles

Park the working vehicle close enough for the jumper cables to reach, but do not allow the vehicles to touch.

Arizona Winters Aren’t Free Passes for Your Car Battery

When most people think about cold weather car battery problems, they picture icy roads and snowbanks, not winter mornings in Tempe, Arizona. While it’s true that we don’t experience subzero temperatures, cooler desert winter weather can still affect your car battery, especially if it’s already been weakened by extreme summer heat.

In fact, Arizona heat is often what does the most damage, and winter is when those hidden battery issues finally show up.

How Cooler Temperatures Affect Car Batteries in Arizona

Car batteries rely on chemical reactions to generate power. When temperatures drop, even into the 40s or 50s, those reactions slow down. At the same time, your engine needs more power to start, placing extra strain on the battery.

For Tempe drivers, this means:

Batteries weakened by summer heat struggle more in the winter.

Short trips in cooler weather don’t fully recharge the battery.

Older batteries are more likely to fail without warning.

What Happens When You Don’t Take Care of Your Car Battery

Ignoring battery maintenance can lead to more than just an inconvenient situation where your car doesn’t start. When a car battery is neglected, it can cause:

Sudden vehicle breakdowns while you’re at home or work

Electrical system stress

Alternator overwork and premature failure

Corrosion buildup on terminals

Reduced reliability during early morning starts

A failing battery often gives little to no warning, which is why proactive care matters.

Watch this video to see why regular battery maintenance is so important:

Why Starting With a High-Quality Car Battery Matters

Not all car batteries are created equal. Cheaper batteries may seem like a bargain because of the low upfront cost, but they typically:

Have shorter lifespans

Perform poorly in temperature swings

Lack adequate warranties

Are more prone to early failure

In Arizona’s harsh climate, a high-quality car battery is a necessary investment, not an optional upgrade. A properly matched, premium battery can handle heat damage better and deliver reliable cold-weather performance when winter arrives.

5 Cold Weather Battery Care Tips for Tempe Drivers

Even in mild Arizona winters, a few simple habits can extend your car battery’s life:

Have your battery tested before winter mornings get cooler.

Keep battery terminals clean and corrosion-free.

Limit short driving trips when possible.

Turn off electronics before shutting off your engine.

Proactively replace batteries that are more than 3 years old.

As is true with many other vehicle maintenance tasks, preventive care now can save you from unexpected trouble later.

These shorter days really showed me that my headlight seems dimmer than usual. If this has never happened to you, I’ll let you in on a little secret… dim headlights can indicate that your car battery requires a little battery maintenance to remove corrosion for better performance. It can also mean that your car battery has reached the end of its lifespan and requires replacement. Not sure how to proceed? Keep reading for more helpful tips on battery care.

6 Warning Signs Of A Dying Car Battery

According to AAA, car battery issues are a leading cause of roadside breakdowns. Unfortunately, many motorists don’t perform battery tests or schedule battery maintenance until it’s too late. Without routine checks and service, a dying battery can fail, leaving you stranded. Below are six common warning signs that your car battery may be dying.

Bad Smell Under The Hood

If your car battery smells like rotten eggs, it is a warning sign that it is dying. Usually, a car battery is completely sealed and has no smell. A foul smell suggests a cracked or damaged battery case is leaking electrolyte fluid (which contains sulfuric acid). Leaking battery acid can be dangerous, so schedule a diagnostic or battery service right away.

Clicking Noise

If you hear a rapid, repeated clicking noise when trying to start your car, there’s usually something wrong with the electrical system. The sound could mean a dead battery or a faulty alternator. A single, faint clicking sound can indicate a completely dead battery.

Dashboard Warning Light

Depending on your vehicle, one or more dashboard warning lights may illuminate. The Check Engine light, the Battery icon light, or the ‘GEN’ or ‘ALT’ lights on older model vehicles are common indicators of a charging system issue. If any of these warning lights illuminate on your dashboard, bring your vehicle into your trusted service station as soon as possible to avoid getting stranded in a parking lot with a dead battery.

Dim Headlights

If your vehicle’s headlights start to dim while driving, your alternator may not be providing enough power to keep your car battery charged. This means your car is running on battery power alone, which can deplete and damage your battery beyond repair if left unaddressed for too long.

Excessive Corrosion, Cracks, Or Damage To Battery

Sometimes, your car battery just needs a good cleaning to remove excess corrosion from the terminals. Scheduling a battery service can ensure that a skilled auto technician cleans dirty connections, tightens loose cables and straps, and inspects the battery case for cracks or damage. Routine battery maintenance helps extend your car battery life and spots weakened batteries before they die.

Hard To Start

When your car battery starts to run low, the engine may crank slowly, be hard to start, or not start at all.

Top Causes Of Car Battery Failure

Car batteries are an essential component in all modern vehicles. Even hybrids and EV vehicles use a standard 12-volt battery to initiate the startup sequence before the electronic battery pack engages. It is important to remember that car batteries don’t last forever. Their lifespan varies depending on your vehicle type, where you live, environmental factors (including weather), and how you drive. Let’s delve into a few causes of car battery failure below.

Age

The average car battery lasts between 3-6 years, depending on driving habits, weather conditions, and maintenance intervals. Routine testing is vital for prolonging your vehicle’s battery lifespan, especially after it reaches the three-year mark.

Damaged Components

A faulty alternator, electrical short, or damaged wiring can cause your car battery to fail.

Driving Habits

Long periods of inactivity or frequent short-distance driving can weaken the battery over time.

Electrical Drain

Leaving your vehicle’s headlights on or charging electronic devices (like your cell phone) without the engine running can lead to premature car battery failure.

Poor Battery Maintenance

Allowing corrosion to build up on terminals can reduce car battery efficiency and performance.

Weather

Hot weather can rapidly drain your battery, while colder weather can make it harder to start your engine.

Routine Car Battery Maintenance

Routine car battery maintenance and timely replacement can help keep your vehicle running smoothly. If you’re experiencing a hard-to-start engine, a clicking noise at startup, dim headlights, or battery corrosion, contact Ron’s Garage for an inspection. Our experienced service technicians will test and clean your car battery. If it has discharged, but is still operational, we can recharge it so you can be on your way quickly. On the other hand, if it has reached the end of its lifespan, we will replace it with the correct size and type battery for your vehicle’s needs.

The car battery powers the electrical system of the vehicle. It is necessary for starting the engine and for the working of electronic components.

Here are six warning signs you must not ignore, which may indicate a problem with your battery.

Slow Engine Crank: If you face difficulty in starting the engine and have to repeatedly crank, it is indicative of battery failure.

Frequent Jump Starts: If the battery turns weak and requires frequent jump-starting, the battery is unable to hold charge. Jumpstarting the battery frequently also causes damage to it.

Dim Lights: If the headlights are not glowing brightly and start flickering, it is indicative of a weak battery. The power is not sufficient for the electrical system to function at its full potential.

Electrical Issues: If the stereo, horn, and power windows are not functioning properly, it may be a sign of battery failure. New generation vehicles have more electrical and electronic systems, which require more battery power. Damage to cables and wires can also cause problems with the functioning of electronic and electrical accessories.

Corrosion of Battery Terminals: If there is a white, ashy substance seen around the battery terminals, it may be due to leakage in the battery. This affects the output voltage of the battery, thus reducing the efficiency of the car. A thin coat of petroleum jelly is applied to the terminals to prevent corrosion. Cleaning of the battery tray also helps clear debris and rust that can corrode the terminals.

Battery Age: Every battery has a life span. It usually lasts up to two years. Older batteries can’t be serviced and need replacement. If the dashboard battery indicator lights up, it is a sure sign of battery failure. In such cases, the battery replacement is the only solution.

The car battery is one of the most important components of your vehicle. It provides the electricity needed to start the engine, turn on the lights, power the infotainment system and other electronic components. However, as we all know, it has a limited lifespan and needs to be replaced after a few years.

If you’re unaware of how to dispose of car batteries properly, then you could unknowingly be contributing to the further degradation of the environment. That’s because batteries contain toxic chemicals that can pollute the soil and waterways, posing serious health hazards.

If you want to know how you can safely dispose of used up car batteries, continue reading. This blog will not only show you the proper way to dispose of old car batteries, it also highlights the benefits of doing so.

Are car batteries recyclable?

Yes, they are! And doing so actually offers a lot of benefits. Recycling car batteries involves the collection of used batteries from various sources, sorting them based on their composition, and breaking them down into their constituent parts, such as lead, plastic, and acid. These materials are then purified and reused to manufacture new batteries, reducing the need for new materials and preventing more hazardous waste from doing significant damage to the environment.

Other than protecting nature, car battery recycling carries economic benefits. It can create job opportunities and generate revenue. Below is a quick rundown on some of the benefits if you choose to recycle car batteries:

1. Reduced Pollution

Car batteries contain a variety of harmful chemicals, including lead and sulfuric acid. These toxic chemicals can seep into the soil and water supply when a battery is improperly disposed of, leading to pollution and environmental damage.

2. Conserved Energy

The production of new car batteries requires a significant amount of energy, as does the mining and processing of the materials used to make them. Through car battery recycling, much energy can be saved, especially lead-acid batteries, since more than 95 percent of its contents are recyclable according to the Battery Council International.

3. Job Creation

The recycling industry is a major employer worldwide, providing jobs for millions of people. By recycling car batteries, more jobs can be created, and this can help support local economies and communities.

4. Fire Prevention

Improperly disposed of car batteries can be a major fire hazard. When the acid in the battery comes into contact with metal or other materials, it can cause a spark that can ignite flammable materials. When you recycle car batteries, the risk of battery fires can be significantly reduced.

5. Reduced Lead Poisoning Risks

Lead is a toxic metal that can cause a range of health problems, including developmental delays, behavioral problems, and learning difficulties. When car batteries are thrown away improperly, the lead they contain can leach into the soil and water supply, increasing the risks of lead poisoning. This can be effectively prevented when car batteries are recycled.

6. Savings

By reclaiming valuable materials from car batteries, you can reduce the need for new materials that have to be extracted. This can help lower production expenses significantly.

How To Recycle Car Batteries

To reduce the impact on the environment, it’s important that car batteries are reused properly. Here are the steps to follow when recycling car batteries:

1. Remove the battery.

From the car, take out the used battery. When doing so, make sure that you wear gloves and goggles to protect yourself from any acid or other harmful substances that could be present.

2. Store the battery.

Once the battery has been removed from the car, place it in a cool and dry place, preferably in a plastic container. Also, make sure that the battery is kept away from any sources of heat, so sparks can be avoided.

3. Visit a recycling center.

When you have saved a few used batteries, take these to a recycling center where they are being accepted. Many auto parts stores, scrap yards, and recycling facilities usually welcome them.

4. Observe the process.

If permitted, you can watch how car batteries are recycled. The process involves breaking down the battery into its basic parts, separating those which can be reused. Lead and plastic are the components that are often recycled. The lead content is melted down and used to make new batteries, while the plastic portion is reprocessed and used to produce new products.

Key Takeaway

Car battery recycling provides a wide range of benefits to the environment and to people, from reducing pollution to creating jobs. As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, recycling is likely to become an increasingly important part of many industries, including the automotive business.

Detailed diagnosis by a BA Auto Care tech found the underlying cause of this “hairy” problem quickly and efficiently.

A 2009 Toyota Prius came into the shop recently with the check engine light on. This is a common issue, so the technician downloaded the codes and data that related to the battery. After reviewing the data related to each of the codes, he determined that the Hybrid Battery was overheating.

There was one particular code that related to the cooling fan system that cools the battery. The fan was working but was taking too much current. After further inspection, it turned out that the fan was completely blocked with dog hair dust and dirt! This is like the dust and dirt that collects on the fan vents of personal computers. A routine cleaning corrects the issue on both cars and computers. This is especially good news for the Prius owner who thought he was facing an expensive battery replacement.

Luckily, Toyota has a preventive maintenance schedule for the battery fan and filter. If you own a Prius, be sure to build this into your scheduled maintenance program with us. Or you can just brush your dog more often :)!

There can be several reasons for your vehicle charging system to require a replacement battery. Whatever the reason, ensure the technician performs a battery registration on your new car battery.

Winter Driving And Your Car Battery

The performance of your car battery can suffer during the cold winter months. Freezing temperatures can lower lead-acid battery capacity between 20-50%. Plus, winter driving generally utilizes more accessories like headlights, seat warmers, defrosters, and windshield wipers. These accessories can put a considerable strain on your car battery, causing an old or depleted battery to die.

When To Replace Your Car Battery

Performing routine maintenance on your car battery can help prolong its life. Cleaning the battery terminals and keeping them free of corrosion can also help the battery’s performance during the winter. Unfortunately, even the best-maintained battery will not last forever. Here’s how to know when to replace your car battery:

Dead Battery

It’s awful when trying to start your car and hearing the dreaded click-click-click instead. You have a dead battery when it does not have sufficient power to crank the engine to start it. It can happen with age or leaving an electrical component (like your headlights) on after turning off the car. When the battery experiences a full discharge, it requires testing to see if it can still hold a full charge or needs replacing.

Car Battery Won’t Hold A Charge

Over time and use, car batteries accumulate irreversible internal damage, making it harder for them to hold a full charge. Sometimes they can be re-conditioned to hold a full charge again. Sometimes, they are beyond re-conditioning and need replacing.

Car Battery Is Old

Generally speaking, a typical car battery has a 3-6 years life span. If your car battery is older than three years, you should have it checked with every oil change to ensure it can still hold a full charge. Once your car battery reaches six years, experts recommend replacing it, especially if you live in a climate with very hot and/or very cold temperatures.

Bulging, Leaking, or Damaged Car Battery

The battery in your vehicle should be clean, secured with a strap to prevent shifting, and be free of corrosion. Immediately address any signs of bulging, leaking, or cracks in the outer case. Damaged car batteries are dangerous. To be safe, replace them immediately and dispose of, or recycle them appropriately.

Vehicle Charging System

As auto manufacturers design better, faster, and safer vehicles, the vehicle charging system has become more complex. In addition to the basic components (alternator, voltage regulator, drive belt, serpentine belt), many cars now have an electronic control unit (ECU) in their charging systems. The ECU stores data about the charging system.

Battery Registration

The service technician should run the Battery Registration Replacement function on the vehicle charging system’s ECU, each time replacing a car battery. This process completes the following operations:

Deletes the stored battery statistics (battery charge level, current, voltage, temperature)

Sets the new battery capacity to 80%

Stores the current odometer reading

Clears warning messages, dashboard lights, and low voltage/battery fault codes

Battery Programming or Coding

Battery Programming (or Battery Coding) is vital when the replacement battery is different from the old battery. Your vehicle charging system ECU needs to know the battery’s specs (Ah rating, AGM or lead/calcium, RC rating) to set the appropriate charging algorithm. If the algorithm does not match the battery, over-charging or under-charging can damage your car battery and possibly your entire charging system.

The OBD2 Port

An On-Board Diagnostics 2 (OBD2) port is the access point for the ECUs in your vehicle. Your service technician uses this port to connect with their computer. It allows them to see all the error codes and other vehicle data stored by the various system ECUs in your car.
