Car Overheating in Hot Weather? Cooling System Tips for Gresham Drivers

July 30, 2026 / 4

Is Your Car Overheating? Here’s What to Do Before It Becomes an Expensive Repair

Few things are more stressful than seeing steam coming from under your hood or watching your temperature gauge climb into the red. During hot weather, even a small problem with your vehicle’s cooling system can quickly become a major repair if it isn’t addressed.

At All About Automotive, we often see an increase in overheating vehicles during the warmer months. Many of these breakdowns could have been prevented with regular cooling system maintenance and inspections.

If your vehicle starts overheating, don’t ignore it. Continuing to drive can lead to serious engine damage and expensive repairs.

Why Do Vehicles Overheat?

Your vehicle’s cooling system is designed to keep the engine operating at a safe temperature. Over time, however, cooling system components wear out or begin to leak.

Common causes of overheating include:

  • Low coolant levels
  • Coolant leaks
  • Worn or cracked radiator hoses
  • A faulty radiator cap
  • A failing thermostat
  • A worn water pump
  • Cooling fan problems
  • Dirty or deteriorated coolant

Even something as simple as a radiator cap that no longer seals properly can allow coolant to escape and cause the engine to overheat.

Why Regular Cooling System Inspections Matter

Many overheating problems begin long before warning signs appear.

During a cooling system inspection, a technician can:

  • Check coolant level and condition
  • Test the coolant’s freeze and boil protection
  • Inspect hoses for cracks, swelling, or soft spots
  • Pressure test the cooling system for hidden leaks
  • Inspect the radiator cap
  • Look for worn cooling system components

Finding these problems early is often much less expensive than repairing an overheated engine.

Don’t Ignore an Overheating Engine

If your temperature gauge begins climbing or you see steam coming from under the hood:

  • Turn off the air conditioner.
  • Turn the heater on high to help remove heat from the engine.
  • If the temperature continues rising, safely pull over and shut the engine off.
  • Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Hot coolant is under pressure and can cause severe burns.
  • If you’re unsure what’s wrong, have the vehicle towed to a trusted repair shop rather than risking additional engine damage.

Preventative Maintenance Helps Prevent Overheating

Routine cooling system maintenance is one of the easiest ways to avoid overheating. Regular coolant service, inspections, and repairing small leaks early can help protect your engine and reduce the chance of expensive repairs.

Proper maintenance also helps improve vehicle longevity by protecting one of your engine’s most important systems.

Schedule a Cooling System Inspection Today

Don’t wait until your vehicle leaves you stranded on the side of the road. If you’ve noticed your engine running hotter than normal, your coolant level dropping, or you simply want peace of mind before the next heat wave, schedule a cooling system inspection with All About Automotive.
