Winter Preparation

/ 2

As temperatures drop and road conditions become more hazardous, winter preparation becomes critical for every vehicle owner. Cold weather, snow, ice, and road salt can accelerate wear and expose weaknesses in your vehicle’s systems. Scheduling preventative maintenance before the season begins will help ensure your vehicle remains dependable and safe throughout the winter months.  In this month’s blog post, we address critical maintenance items for your fall schedule which include your vehicle’s tires, fluids, battery, and visibility system to prevent breakdowns and costly repairs.

Inspect and Upgrade Tires

Tires are your vehicle’s only point of contact with the road. Before winter, inspect tread depth and sidewall integrity. A minimum tread depth of 6/32 inch is recommended for snowy or icy conditions. If you do a lot of driving in the winter snow or freezing rain, consider switching to winter tires. These are engineered with softer rubber compounds and deeper tread patterns to improve traction. Also, check tire pressure weekly, as cold air causes pressure to drop, reducing grip and fuel efficiency.

Check and Replace Fluids

Cold temperatures affect fluid viscosity and performance. Engine oil thickens in low temperatures, which can hinder lubrication during startup. Switching to a winter-grade oil with lower viscosity may improve cold-weather performance. Ensure coolant levels are adequate and the antifreeze mixture is correct—typically a 50/50 blend of antifreeze and distilled water. This prevents engine freezing and protects internal components. Replace windshield washer fluid with a winter-specific formula that resists freezing and maintains visibility during snow or slush.

Test Battery Health

Battery capacity decreases significantly in cold weather. Have your battery tested for voltage and cold cranking amps. Clean corrosion from terminals and ensure the battery is securely mounted. If the battery is more than three years old or shows signs of weakness, consider replacing it to avoid unexpected failure.

Inspect Wiper Blades and Defrosters

Visibility is essential in winter conditions. Replace worn wiper blades with winter-rated models that resist ice buildup. Test the defroster and heating system to ensure they function properly. A malfunctioning defroster can impair visibility and compromise safety.

Final Checklist

  • Schedule a full vehicle inspection with a trusted service professional like Shade Tree Garage
  • Verify all exterior lights are working properly
  • Lubricate door seals and locks to prevent freezing
  • Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle with blankets, jumper cables, and a flashlight

By addressing these maintenance tasks before winter arrives, you will protect your vehicle from seasonal damage and ensure a safer driving experience.  Contact the service professionals at Shade Tree Garage today to schedule your pre-winter vehicle inspection and maintenance.
