While many people think road trips are synonymous with summertime, here in New England fall can be an amazing time to pack the family in the car and take a drive. The weather is cooler, there’s apple cider in abundance, and the fall foliage in this part of the country can’t be beat!
Here are three routes worth taking a drive on this autumn:
The Kancamagus Highway (Route 112), New Hampshire
This stunning winding highway takes you from Lincoln to Conway, New Hampshire, and the color is simply incredible. You’ll find a number of pull-offs designed specifically for getting out of the car and taking a few pictures, or just breathing in the fresh air.
You can stop at Franconia Notch State Park and hike at the Flume Gorge, walking beneath the foliage! The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway allows you to see the fall leaves from above.
Route 100, Vermont
If you drive it all, that’s 146 miles of tree-lined byway! Stop in lovely Vermont towns as you drive to grab a bite to eat and stretch your legs. You can hike at Thundering Brook Falls or take a gondola ride up Killington peak to get different views of the leaves. Love history? Calvin Coolidge’s birthplace sits on the route.

U.S. Route 1, Maine
Starting in Portland Maine, this highway gives you the best of both worlds: Gorgeous leaves and scenic seaside towns.
The Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine sits on a rocky island off the coast and attracts plenty of visitors each year, while Ogunquit is a great place to stop and shop for local goods or enjoy some seafood. Looking to hike? Camden Hills State Park is the place to pull over.
